Pala--Kirol Txartela Masters Tournament--Players--Tournament Regulations--Schedule--Day 3, 4 (Round 2) Results

The Kirol Txartela Masters Tournament  at the Atano III FrontonDonastia (San Sebastian) began on July 6, 2016.  It will end with a final on August 17, 2016. The Tournament link above explains the nature of the tournament and how it is to be contested. The same information is also available in less graphic form at InnPala. Basically it is an 8 team doubles tournament, consisting of the entire 10 man InnPala roster along with 6 invited amateurs. The teams are split into two 4 team groups. This is a short court tournament. Each match will be contested to a best three out of five 10 point jokos (sets). Table points are determined entirely by number of jokos won. The league phase will consist of a single round robin in each group, with each player playing every other week. Matches will take place every Wednesday evening. At the end of the league phase there will be a final. Source for all match scores: InnPala Twitter feed. For more information on professional players see the player pages linked to on the right side of the blog.

Note: *=Amateur

Third Day: July 20, 2016.

Group A: Landeta--Ibai-Perez defeated Gaubeka-Irigoyen* 3-2 (10-9, 10-6, 1-10, 8-10, 10-9)

Group B:  Fusto-J. Irigoyen*  defeated Zubiri-Ayerbe  3-2 (10-7, 10-5, 6-10, 8-10, 10-7)

Fourth Day: July 27, 2016

Group A: Navarro*-Brefel defeated Necol-Andueza*  3-0 (10-8, 10-9, 10-6)

There is some confusion as to who Brefel's partner was. The InnPala website says it was Navarro, who is listed as Brefel's partner throughout the tournament. But both the InnPala Twitter feed and the InnPala Fronton Facebook page say it was Lopez. It is possible one or the other site was incorrect. It is also possible that the twitter feed/facebook page was correct and Lopez played as a sub, but the team is still called "Navarro-Brefel." There is precedent for this in Remonte, where, in the recent Sagardoaren Txapleketa (Torneo Sidra), there were several substitutions during the tournament. However, the teams were named after interests in the cider trade and they stayed consistent, even to the point of substitutes wearing the name of the original player on their back. If I can find out who actually partnered with Brefel, I will put a note in this entry. For now, InnPala is treating the team as Navarro-Brefel.

Group B:  Arozena*-Ibargari defeated Ibarguren*-Imanol 3-2 (5-10, 10-1, 5-10, 10-6, 10-7)

Group A Table:

Navarro*-Brefel (2-0) (3-0; 3-0)--6 points
Landeta--Ibai-Perez (2-0) (3-1; 3-2)--6 points
Gaubeka-Irigoyen* (0-2) (0-3; 2-3)--2 points
Necol-Andueza* (0-2) (1-3; 0-3)--1 point

Group B Table:

Arozena*-Ibargarai (2-0) (3-0; 3-2)--6 points
Zubiri-Ayerbe (1-1) (3-2; 2-3)--5 points
Ibarguren*-Imanol (0-2) (2-3; 2-3)--4 points
Fusto-J. Irigoyen* (1-1) (0-3; 3-2)--3 points

Remonte--Tournaments or Star Matches--The Fascinating Matchups of Urriza v Uterga

As the career of the great Ezkurra (see more on him and all players on the players pages linked to on the right side of the blog) winds down, two great front courters, Urriza and Uterga, compete to be his heir. And they compete against each other often. This theme continues this summer in both tournaments all over the South Basque and weekly matches at the Galarreta Fronton (Hernani).

Since May 28, 2016, they have faced each other in 4 short court (36 meter mur a gauche) tournament finals, each winning two.  The story of their matches on short courts has been summarized in two Oriamendi2010 articles that dealt with their latest meeting on July 14. The first article announced the scheduling of their latest final and summarized their previous results. The second article chronicled the outcome of their latest match.

Of these 4 matches, we have full video of one.

Uterga-Aizpuru III defeated Urriza-Zaldua 35-25 at Beloki Fronton (1) (2), Zumarraga, in the final of the Gipuzkoako Foru Aldundiaren 2016ko Saria-VII Erremonte Kopa.

Match article (Source: Oriamendi2010):

Full match video: Match begins at 1 hour, 6 minutes, 30 seconds of the recording. (Source: EITB)

Also, the Galarreta "Star" match of June 25, 2016 featured a matchup of the two on the big court:

Urriza-Barrenetxea IV defeated Uterga-Maxtin III-Etxeberria III 40-33.

Match article (Source: Oriamendi2010)

Full match video: (Source: EITB) Note: this video also includes full match video of the match that followed it (Zeberio II-Aizpuru III v Ansa II-Ion). Watching the entire video will give you a taste of a day at Galarrata. The question to ask about the Urriza v Uterga match is "Does an extra player give a team an advantage?"

Remonte--Summer Comings and Goings

As with the other modalities, Summer for Remonte means tournaments. Print coverage for most of Remonte emanates from the Oriamendi2010 web site and its ancillary Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube sites. Links to all things Oriamendi2010 (especially player and rankings pages) are available in the sources page on the right side of the blog. The Oriamendi2010 website is completely bilingual (Euskaren/Castillano). We point to the Castillano site but will apply labels for both languages.

In addition to tournaments, Oriamendi2010, the entity that manages the sport in the South Basque, provides the staple of the sport, four matches every Thursday and Saturday. One of these matches is the marquee or "Star" match. It is covered with a detailed match report. Selected matches are also broadcast on the EITB TV network and then made available for viewing on demand. We will begin coverage of the Star matches July 16, 2016 except for a unique Star match that was held on June 25, 2016 and was broadcast on EITB. Since the "Star" matches are a recurrring feature, they will be kept at the "Remonte--"Star Match" page on the right side of the blog. Tournament coverage will begin with the two tournament finals that were broadcast on EITB in June and July respectively.

Grand Chistera--Minor Modality--Update

The purpose of this update is more to introduce a modality than to update a competition. In this case we have an opportunity to link to video of Grand Chistera. Grand Chistera, for those who don't know, is Jai Alai (or Cesta Punta) played on a fronton place libre (explained on the modalities page on the right side of the blog). These courts are usually about 80 meters long, far larger than any of the indoor courts you will see in these updates. So large that a crash helmet sport is played without headgear. It is amazing to watch and we happen to have access to some very nice video.

From Championnat de France 2016 National B Grand Chistera Competition:

A round of 16 match played on July 10, 2016

White (Eyheagary-Pierrou-J. Portet) defeated Blue (Guignard-Hernandez-Medina) 40-13. Source for score and competition information: Federation Francaise de Pelote Basque.

Match site

For the competition site, simply hit the "retour" key at the match site. This will give you an idea of the size and context of the competition.

Selected match video (Source: Olivier Simon via Tout sur la Pelote Basque Youtube site). 7 minutes 39 seconds. This video is taken from behind the players.

We also have access to another Grand Chistera match video, taken from last year's Championnat de France Pro-Am 2015 competition.

A poul match.

White (J.Olharan-L.Alliez-S.Itoiz) defeated Green (C.Pierrou-A.Alliez-J.Portet)  40-34.

Selected match video (Source: Tout sur la Pelote Basque Youtube site.) 23 minutes, 14 seconds. This video is taken from in front of the players.

There are three interesting things to look for. One is the comparison between back and front views. The second is that these matches are contested among teams of three. The third, which you will easily see, is the difference in talent between National Class B and Professional players.

Note also that Jerome Portet played in both matches. He was also involved in CdF Championnat de France Junior and Senior Level Cesta Punta championships in March of 2016. He is the back man in white in the B match and the back man in Green in the Pro/Am match.

Arnaud Alliez and Jean Olharan are professional players that we will spend quite some time with later in this blog.

Paleta--Paleta Cuir--Paleta Tour 2016

Paleta Tour 2016, a  "haute niveau" level men's tournament sponsored by Section Paloise Pelote Basque was a 12 team, four "poule" round robin doubles competition followed by quarter finals, semi-finals, and a final that ran from May 13-July 2, 2016. Paleta Cuir is explained in the modalities page on the right side of the blog. This tournament was played on a 36 meter mur a gauche court. Cuir, for those who do not know, means leather, a very hard leather ball. And that means crash helmets and an entirely different sound when ball hits paleta or wall. Note the difference in striking area between the short bat here and the paleta used for the rubber ball. The game moves at an incredible pace, as you'll see. Source for all information, pelotelive.free.fr. Video source: Olivier Simon via Tout sur la Pelote Basque Youtube site. The videos (full, condensed and selected parts of matches) are all linked from their match pages at pelotelive.free.fr. Make sure to "disactiver" the auto-refresh before watching.

Final:

Dardenne-Chatellier defeated Clain-Lagarde 3-1 (8-10, 10-8, 10-3, 10-4)

Competition site

Final Match video

In addition to the final match video, there are match videos for seven other matches. 8 of 19 matches are covered. Look for the video icon as you scroll through the competition site. For beginners, there is no better introduction to this modality. For experienced fans, it is, quite simply, a feast.

Pala--Kirol Txartela Masters Tournament--Players--Tournament Regulations--Schedule--Day 1, 2 (Round 1) Results

Related Story about the New Innpala Generation (Deia)

This story emphasized the amazing fact that this was the first final in three years without either GaubekaFusto, or both participating. It noted the youth of three of the four players and how Pala has moved in the direction of the short court over the years. It was a great contextual article for one who is new to the sport. It also emphasized the possible transition from the dominance of these two players. Of course they are still active, and will have something to say about that.

Main Nue--Player Rankings--June 27, 2016

Note that player rankings links are always available within the "address for feedback, scope..." page on the right side of the main blog page. You can also find how these rankings are calculated there.

As of June 27, 2015 the top five were:

Larralde--8600
Ducassou--7700
Bilbao--4950
Guichandut--4950
De Ezcurra--4650

Main Nue Tournament--Le Trophee Intersports

Le Trophee Intersports (pelotefree.live.fr) (Esku Pilota), played at Trinquet Anderenia ,Donibane Lohizune (Saint-Jean-de-Luz) June 24, 27, 2016:

Final:

Monce-Guichandut defeated Elgart-Amulet 40-35

Between the two sources linked to above, the entire tournament is covered, The Esku Pilota website contains a succinct final match story. You can also find the complete videos of all three matches there (2 semi-finals and a final), but not in one place. For that check the Esku Pilota Youtube site. But the easiest place to get almost everything you will need to enjoy this tournament is the pelotefree.live.fr site linked to above. All three match videos are conveniently located (when you are inside one match of a competition, simply close that window to take you back to the main competition site). The final contains a graph and linescore. The second semi-final is the most professionally produced video, with sound commentary and a superimposed scoreboard. The first video is the most basic and you will have to listen to the judge call out the scores. On top of all this, there is a 4 and 1/2 minute audio (at the Esku Pilota web site) with Monce about how it feels to win a tournament. With all the visual and sound information available at the sources, I decided not to burden you with any analysis of this tournament, as it is all there for you to see, hear, and read about. The only thing I might add is to watch Monce and Guichandut, not just in the final, but in both their tournament matches. They are young, up and coming players, very athletic,  hungry, and enthusiastic. A joy to watch.

Main Nue Tournament--Challenge Elhina

Challenge Elhina  (Trinquet ElhinaAmendaritz), Jun. 5, 12, 19, 26, 2016.

The best place to find the complete context of this EP 1000 tournament is the pilotelive.free.fr (Challenge Elhina) link above. This was a 6 team doubles tournament played in two "poules." Each three team "poule" played a round robin against the other two, so that over the course of the four week tournament there were three matches played in each "poule", with the best records in each going on to the final. The source of all of the information about this tournament, from match stories, selected match statistics, interviews with the players, and full match video was either the Esku Pilota web or Youtube site. I have used the pelotelive.free.fr site as the base site to link to because of its ease of access as a central point of departure for the entire tournament. You should be able to link back to the original Esku Pilota sites of interest from links given at pelotelive.free.fr. Note that when you enter an individual match from the competition page,PFF will open a new window. To get back to the competition simply close that window. And then use the back arrow to get back to the blog item.

Main Nue--Fronton Place Libre--Where it all begins.

Before the "elite pros" of the Esku Pilota roster played in the great old trinquet cathedrals like Trinquet Garat (Donibane Garazi (Saint-John-Pied-de-Port)), or the magnificent modern "glass trinquets" like Trinquet Moderne (Baiona (Bayonne)), they played against a single wall (fronton place libre), with the sky for a roof.  Here, provided by the Pays D'Orthe Main Nue Youtube site are selected match video from four recent amateur championship matches:

There are two errors in my commentary that I know of.

Point 3 consumed 1 ball in play (a service ace), not 11. So all of the total balls in play for the first 10 points and the running total balls in play for the match should be adjusted accordingly. The total number of balls in play for the match should be 864, not 874.

In the commentary about the last 10 points of the match the winners were referred to as "M-O". They should have been referred to as "M-M". For any other errors found, please send corrections to the address at the top of this report.

For June 1-July 11, 2016:

July 11, 2016: Inchauspe-De Ezcurra defeated L. Lambert-Lezcano 50-44

July 4, 2016: Monce-Migueltorena defeated Aguirre-Benesse 50-33

June 27, 2016: Aguirre-Benesse defeated Inchause-Bonetbelche 50-37

B. Trinquet Saint-AndreBaiona (Bayonne)

For June 4- July 7, 2016:

July 7, 2016: Alcacena-Lucu defeated Olcomendy-Amestoy 50-29

June 30, 2016: Darmendrail-Lucu  defeated Alcacena-Migueltorena 50-27

June 23, 2016: Aguirre-Iribarren defeated  Alcacena-Lucu 50-44

June 16, 2016: Aguirre-Iturbe defeated Ospital-Iribarren 50-38

Note that linked players are on the Esku Pilota roster. See the player pages under the pages entry on the left side of the page to access player information as the direct links to players is phased out of these posts.

There were no other single matches in June because the three weeks before June 16 were taken up with the Trophee de Commercants de Bayonne (the final of which will be discussed in a post on tournaments).

These matches are important for cultural reasons (one in the tiny hamlet of Donibane Garazi and the other in the metropolis of Baiona--both in old fashioned trinquets). They also serve to give valuable exposure and experience to younger players. But most impressive to me is the idea of a 50 point match, the will and stamina that it takes to win one. In the above discussed match, the losers were broken on the rack of two consecutive points that consumed 35 and 25 balls in play. One of the wonderful things about Main Nue is how a service ace can be followed by a 35 balls in play point. Because of the geometry of the trinquet and all of its  ornamentations, because the back courters are so mobile and so adept at rebote (rebound) shots off the back wall, because there are four walls (five if you count the different hights of parts of the left wall), a single point in Main Nue can feel like a life experience. For the fan. For the player and  the player's hands, I cannot imagine what they go through. There are other types of handball. There is nothing quite like Main Nue.

Main Nue--Transition from Spring to Summer

With the completion of the Championnat de France (Elite Pro A) (Elite Pro B) the Spring and Summer has transformed into a series of tournaments and weekly scheduled matches. The list of tournaments and their value from now until the end of the year is at the Esku Pilota calendar page. In addition, there are scheduled 50 point matches on Mondays at Trinquet Garat, Donibane Garazi  (Saint-John-Pied-de-Port), and on Thursdays at Trinquet Saint-AndreBaiona (Bayonne). Information on these matches largely comes from Esku Pilota and varies from simple score, to score with statistics, articles, and/or full match videos.

Before we talk about the matches or tournaments that have taken place since we last discussed Main Nue we must talk about the increase in access to these matches. The video coverage of matches has increased to the point where it is becoming difficult for the viewer to keep up.  Since the final of the Trophee de Cize on May 16, there have been 8 full match videos presented by Esku Pilota and available at either their web site or their Youtube site. Most of these have also been linked to from pelotelive.free.fr, which is excellent for our purposes because once you have located the tournament (search for Specialite: "main nue" or "main nue individuel"; Organisateur:  "Esku Pilota" and Saison: "2015-16" to locate information for the entire tournaments, along with video links) you can immediately see the larger context of each of the tournaments. Combining the two major sites will give you a select combination match stories, match graphs, linescores, videos, and/or analyses.  Note that with all videos located at pelotelive.free.fr, you must click on the "desactiver" under the video in order for the video to work. pelotelive.free.fr automatically resets every 30 seconds and this will stop the video and kick you back out to the site if you do not "disactiver" first.

In these 8 full match videos we have seen (rankings out of 26--all players ranked together as of June 27, 2016, when available, are in parentheses) front courters Aguirre (17), Bidiondo,  Bielle (11), Darmendrail,  Elgart (14), Etchegaray (8), Larralde (1), Olcomendy (15), Ospital (7), and Monce (10),

And back courters Amulet (6), Bilbao (3), De Ezcurra (5),  Guichandut (4), Ducassou (2), Harismendy (20), Inda, Irribaren, Iturbe, Lucu, and Migueltorena. (Rankings are based on how well players do in tournaments, weighted by the importance of the tournaments). This is an excellent combination of young talent, established stars, and long time veterans. If you watch the matches and tournaments that we will discuss and point to, you will see 9 of the top 10 and 13 of the top 15 players ranked at Esku Pilota. And you will see the best of them at the moment (Larralde and Ducassou) a lot. A feast lovingly provided by Esku Pilota. Speaking as a relatively new fan of Main Nue, it has been fantastic to watch. And certainly not easy to provide by an organization that has nowhere near the fiduciary strength of an Asegarce or ASPE (with the backing of a large commercial TV network). Merci beaucoup Esku Pilota!

Mano--End of 2015-16 season player records

With the end of the Buruz Buruko Txapelketa the 2015-16 (October 2015-May 2016) Campeonato season has come to an end. The champions for the season were Urrutikotxea (4 1/2 and doubles), Oliazola II (doubles) and Irribarria (singles).

Asegarce compiled statistics of its players for the season and listed them by winning percentage in an article appearing on the site on June 14, 2016. The leading percentages were Urrutikotxea (23-7--77% wins) and Oliazola II (20-10--67% wins).

ASPE did not provide such a listing, so I attempted to make one myself. I checked each pelotari listed as active on the ASPE roster and did an ASPE database lookup for results from October 1, 2015 until May 31, 2016. I'm not sure how valid this is (several active pelotaris were not in the database). I will list them by most wins.

Mtz. de Irujo         20-5
Gorka                    19-9
Mendizabal III      18-10
Ezkurdia                16-12
Barriola                 12-10
Juanarena               10-11
Martija                    8-3
Merino II                8-9
Merino                    7-16
Cecilio                     6-1
Zabaleta                   5-4
Elordi                       5-14
Retegi BI                  4-2
Erostarbe                  4-10
Zubieta                      1-6

There was no information in the database for Irribarria. His pelotari page had his record since his debut March 22, 2015 at 28-37. Other players listed on the roster but not in the database:

Altuna III
Irusta
Jaka
Reztusa
Tolosa
Urruzola
