JAI ALAI/CESTA PUNTA--MAGIC CITY BATTLE COURT H2H TEAM COMPETITION--DAILY POINT BY POINT--STATISTICS--WEEK 1--FEBRUARY 14, 15, 2022

Magic City Jai Alai, Miami Florida (1-- still photo from Magic City Hustle via WJCT 88.9 FM Radio News Story) (2--City--Wikipedia) short court Battle Court H2H competition began on February 14, 2022 and will be played on Sundays through Tuesdays into April of 2022. 5 matches are played each day, (3 singles and 2 pairs). Each match is played as best two of three sets, each set being a 6 point partido.  There are 4 teams, each with a 6 man roster. Each singles match win adds 1 point to the team's total. Each pairs win adds 1.5 points. There are a total of 6 possible points per Day. At the end of the League phase the two teams with the most points will meet in a final match.

Matches are available live beginning at 5:00 PM (17:00) Eastern (10:00 PM--22:00 GMT). They are also available on demand after the match is over. They can be accessed via WatchJaiAlai.com or the Jai Alai TV app. Free registration is required--I will not be linking to these matches due to the registration aspect. For those who are interested, it is easy to find particular points by locating the video scoreboard in each match. To locate matches on the video, use the link below to the Magic City Jai Alai main page, and use the times provided in the summary section to help guide you.

24 of Magic City's 28 man roster will participate. All the information you need to know about this competition can be accessed from the Magic City Jai Alai main page. The information is in the following order as you scroll down the page.

 ==================

This blog will cover each match of the Battle Court H2H Team competition, point by point. I will be scoring each match, unless/until I find an official scoring source.  My scoring is subjective. Yours may be different.

I use my knowledge of the modality, along with the excellent commentary of Stu Nieman and Andrew Blechman to help me. My criteria is based on the rather strict criteria used to score long court matches in Iparralde-- North Basque Country--AKA France (if the pelota touches the cesta it is an error, with a few, subjective exceptions--judgments on rebotes, diving save attempts, apron crashes into protective mesh, etc.). This may or may not be the best way to do things, especially with regard to pairs matches on the short court, considering the speed of play (how long a rally takes, not the speed of the pelota). What you will see, most likely, is more errors than you might agree with. I will also be providing statistics for what I call "non-error percentage," which is another way to look at the quality of a match. Non-error percentage is: (number of balls in play - errors)/balls in play. For long court traditional Jai Alai, a good percentage, in my experience, is between 92 and 94. In addition, I will also provide average balls in play per point information that may be useful for analyzing the quality of play.

For each match, the winners' points plus the loser's errors will equal the final score.

I hope you enjoy this endeavor and that it adds to your enjoyment of the competition.  Feedback and corrections are always welcomed.

Week 1:

Day 2: February 15 (5 matches, 11 sets, 102 points, 575 Balls in Play)

Notable:

Once again the 4th match of the day was the best, with Goixerri-Aratz defeating Inaki-Julen in straight sets. The 19 point match featured 9 points that consumed 10 or more balls, and a non-error percentage of .927. There were 179 balls in play.

Player of the day, in my opinion, was Robin (Renegades), a veteran of the Jai Alai battles whose last stop was Calder Jai Alai in 2021. He had the best net points of the day (+4 -0) and, in a competition where a lot of puntistas are trying to break the glass walls, he scored 3 dejadas (including 1 from behind the 8 line), and scored the first untouched service ace so far. The 4 points were instrumental in the 2nd set win, which clinched the day and put his team at the top of the table with 4 League points.

Notable:

The best match by far was the first pairs match (Match 4). Don't let the total score fool you. This was a hard fought, excellent match (as the non-error % and Average BIP per point clearly show). The pace of play  was literally breath taking. One might speculate that the high number of errors in a pairs match of this quality, with the players and pelota pin balling all over the place, might have been due to sheer fatigue at the end of points. Of the 15 points, 3 consumed 21 or more balls in play, and 10 consumed 11 or more BIP.

Douglas (Chargers) was clearly the player of the day, doing his best impersonation of Babe Ruth/Shohei Otani, playing 3 matches, 1 singles, 1 pairs in front, and 1 pairs in the back. His total output was +7 -2 singles, +3 -2 pairs in the front, and +3 -3 pairs in the back. He was 2-1 overall, and helped his team back from 0-2 to 2.5-2 with 2 dominant wins.
