Matches are available live beginning at 5:00 PM (17:00) Eastern (10:00 PM--22:00 GMT). They are also available on demand after the match is over. For those who are interested, it is easy to find particular points by locating the video scoreboard in each match. * Reflects a net point adjustment of -2 points to Warriors and +2 to Cyclones for what appears to be an error in scoring on March 1, 2022 (Match 2, Set 1, between Bradley(#5) (Warriors) and Jeden(#5) (Cyclones). The match was scored 2-6 Jeden but was actually 3-5 due to an inadvertent score error (see below for details). This is an extremely rare occurence, and one that I discovered and confirmed only after watching the replay multiple times. The scorers do this in real time watching points that are progressing with great rapidity. Through March 1, there have been 827 scored points in 40 matches. 1 point has been called in error. (.99988).

Notable:

The Warriors shut out the Cyclones today, (5-0 in Matches, 6-0 in League points). With the win, the Warriors moved to the top of the table, while the Cyclones remained at the bottom.

Game 4 was one of the best exhibitions of Partido Jai Alai that I have seen. The first point of the first set consumed 84 balls in play, by far the longest in terms of balls in play and time that I have ever seen. In fact it is the 2nd longest match by BIP and time that I have seen in any Basque Pelota modality since I began tracking such things in 2016. The match featured 491 BIP and a Non-error % of .962. Of the 26 points played, 10 consumed over 20 balls in play. I also counted 53 excellent saves.

The Day featured the most 2-1 sets of any so far with 5 of the 6 matches going the limit. The Day also featured a phenomenal 1,113 balls in play during the course of its 126 points.

Player of the Day, for sheer endurance as well as excellent play, was Nicolas of the Warriors. He played in the back in both Pairs matches, meaning he was on the court for 52 consecutive points and 784 balls in play. He aided his team's wins with at least 28 excellent saves. He made 7 errors in the two matches. Hopefully, he will enjoy a bit of a respite for his rubber arm before playing this format again.

Etc. A shout out to Carballo-Manu, Cyclones #1 Pairs team, who have now played 68 and 84 ball points in this competition. They are now 1-1 in the mammoth points department.

Notable:

How damaging Renegades forfeit was today is yet to be determined, but it is 1.5 points they cannot get back. As a result, they lost the Day 4.0-2.0 after beginning the Singles portion with 2 wins out of 3 matches (2-0). The Renegades remained in First Place, while Chargers, winning their first Day of the Season (now 1-3, moved from 4th to 2nd, and are 2.5 points off the lead. The rematch between arguably the best two Singles Players on the roster (Goixerri--Renegades, and Douglas--Chargers today went to Goixerri. Last week when the two met, Goixerri was a simple Dejada away from winning, but fluffed the shot and ended up losing. This time, Goixerri dominated, winning in straight sets in a match that, while not aesthetically beautiful (.421 total score--+8 -11, with a Non-error % of .897), it did have flashes of wonderful play, particularly on defense, where the two players combined for 13 excellent saves.

Player of the day today was Jairo (#2) (Chargers), who is finding his rhythm in the short court game. He easily won his match against Aratz (#2) (Renegades) and led all players today in net score with +7 -1. The match featured great defense by both players (17 excellent saves). Jairo showed great expertise with the forehand rebote today, something that many players on this roster find quite challenging. He has many years of experience on the long court and today, he showed a player almost 20 years his junior that he will be a force to be reckoned with in this competition.

Notable:

It was an exciting and competitive Day's play. The outcome was not settled until the last point of the last set, a 22 balls in play barn burner. A Diaz(#4 Pairs) (Warriors) Reverse Inside Pass from the 5 Line on the outside settled the matter, after the Chargers came back from a 5-3 deficit to tie the set. Three matches went the full five sets, the first time that has happened this season. And the Warriors came back from a 2.5-2 match deficit to win the Day 3.5-2.5. The quality of play was down a bit, to be expected when the highest ranked singles matc hup was a #4 v #4. The Pairs matchups were #4 v #4 and #2 v #2. The cumulative total scoring (122 points) was +39 -83 (.320) and the Non-error % (total balls in play - errors)/total balls in play) was .897. Only one player had an individual positive net score. But the line score showed five 6-5 sets, one in each match, three of which were deciding sets. When it was over, the Warriors moved from 3rd to 2nd in the standings while the Cyclones dropped to 3rd. The Chargers are still looking for their first Day win.

Player of the Day: Diaz (#6 Singles, #4 Pairs) (Warriors). Diaz was a major factor in 2.5 (2 wins) of the Warriors 3.5 points today. His winners closed out the 3rd Set of both his matches. A great clutch performance. He was the only player to have a + total score on the Day, (+8 -6 Singles and +2 -2 Pairs). And he chipped in with 4 excellent saves in the final match.

Etc.: Beginning with Match 4 today I will be counting "saves", a subjective call on saves that are superlative. There are many more saves in these matches, but I'm only going to count the ones I see as "eye openers." Both Match 3 and 4 were fantastic today. Both featured Goixerri (#1 Singles and Pairs) (Renegades), who was far and away the player of the day (+18 -3 overall, with a perfect +8 -0 in Match 4). In Match 3 he and and Manu (#1) Cyclones engaged in a shot making and great defense match (+13 -5 Total Score with a .957 non-error %.

The match consumed 321 balls in play, had a total score of +14 -4, and an astronomical non-error % of .988, the highest I have ever seen in a Partido. Say what you will about the difference between this brand of Jai Alai and the traditional long court game, 4 errors out of 321 balls in play is remarkable. The fact that 3 of the 4 players in Match 4 are ex-Dania players says a lot, in my opinion, about their ability to quickly adjust to the vagaries of the short "soft ball" game. (Note that the notes I made about saves in Match 4 below are just a sampling of all the great saves made in that match).

Notable:

Every day Match 4 seems to out do what it did the day before. Yesterday's 223 ball partido that featured a 46 ball point, was followed by today's 489 ball partido that featured a 55 ball point, (a brand new "mammoth point" for a blog page listing the longest points I have seen in any modality). Nicolas Eyheragaray (Warriors #2 back--formerly known as Yeche), an early match player on the Dania Jai Alai long court roster), played his first match in this format and was a catching machine. He did make 6 errors, but he also caught over 100 shots. He made at least 5 wall climb saves, along with reverse chic-chac and chula winners, as well as an overhead outside pass. His reward was to play in the next pairs match, which consumed 149 balls in play. So he was involved in 638 of the 880 balls in play today.

In fact everyone played extremely well (see the point by point below). In addition to the 55 ball point there were 11 other points that consumed over 20 balls in play. The Non-error % was fantastic: .969, and the average Balls in Play per point was 20.4.

Player of the day: Ikeda (Cyclones) (#4 singles, #2 pairs), was part of both Cyclones wins today, with +7 -1 in his singles match and +1 -3 in the mammoth 4th match, including at least 5 sparkling saves.

Etc. Bradley (#5 Warriors) is demonstrating one of the ways in which the short, "soft pelota" game differs from the traditional game. He has perfected a hard and low serve that is very difficult to handle. The serve is basically impossible on the long court, as it would be intercepted in the pairs version and would be easily handled in the singles version by an opponent who would anticipate it and move in. But in this game he is a handful. 5 of his winners came directly from serves (1 ace and 4 forced errors by his handcuffed opponent). While he also had a double fault and needed two serves on multiple occasions, he is showing how devastating a serve can be in the short court game.

Notable:

Match 4 has so far been extraordinary in this competition and this one was no different. What really stood out was the 7th point of the first set. There were 46 balls in play. This is the longest partido Jai Alai point I have seen by BIP and by time (2 minutes, 33 seconds), which is amazing, as the other mammoth Jai Alai partido points I have chronicled at my Mammoth Basque Pelota Points Page were played on a traditional long court with a "hard pelota" (35, 36, and 37 balls in play). Aratz had one of the finest +0 -1s you will see as he soaked up everything (well, almost everything) in the 223 ball partido. Benny, who had a rough outing in terms of personal score (+2 -8), made the shot of the match (and competition so far), in my opinion, a low, rocket reverse two wall winner from the 9 line, as well as countless spectacular catches. The scores were not particularly close, but the non-error percentage (.960) was phenomenal, the best NEP of this competition by a long way. The average BIP per point was 13.1 and 3 of the 17 points consumed 20 or more balls in play. 9 of the points consumed over 10 balls.

Players of the day were

A. Douglas (Chargers) and Goixerri (Renegades), who put on a shot making clinic in the 167 ball 3 set Match 3. The match was by no means "perfect", and was unfortunate in that it turned on Goixerri's error on the easiest of dejadas at 5-4 in Set 3. Douglas then did what any good player in any sport does when gifted a second chance. He won the match. The first set had 9 winners of the 10 points, the second and 3rd had 5 of 10 and 5 of 11 respectively. The total score was +19 -12 (.613). Compare that to the First Week (Feb 13-14--10 matches)--average match total score of +7.5 -11.9 (.387). As far as individual total match scores for the first week:

February 14: +9 -10; +8 -8; +9 -7 (.563); +3 -12; +6 -14

February 15: +5 -19; +9 -13; +9 -12; +6 -13; +5 -11

So this match had not only 10 more winners than the next best score, but also a winning percentage that was 50 points higher.
