Remonte--Sagardoaren Txapelketa (Tourneo Sidra) Semi-Final League: Round 3

The Sagardoaren Txapelketa/El Torneo de la Sidra/Cider Tournament began February 28, 2019 and will end with a final on May 4, 2019. 

The Sagardoaren Txapelketa IX features 8 Oriamendi2010 roster pairs (7 players from the A Group and 9 from the B Group). The tournament will be contested in two 4 team groups (A and B). Each team corresponds to a cider house sponsor. Letters following the players' names correspond to their Oriamendi2010 groups.

Of these pairs, only Segurola-Endika have ever won the Tournament. There are five players who did not play (except as substitutes) last year. They are Ansa II, Etxarri, and Goikoetxea V in the front; Labaka and Zaldua in the back.

The tournament will consist of a League phase, a single round robin in each group. There will be a change in how the Semi-finals are contested this year. The first and second place teams in each group will advance to a Semi-final League, a single round robin. At the end of the Semi-final League the top two teams will play in the Final on May 4. This format makes the League play more important. Under the old format, all teams advanced, but were seeded so that the teams that finished lower had to play more matches to get to the Final.

Scoring for the League phase will be as follows.

Match article

Ezkurra II-Garces, representing Gurutzeta, unexpectedly punched their ticket to the Final of the Sagardoaren Txapelketa (Torneo Cidra/Cider Tounament) by upsetting the A-B team of Urriza-Zaldua (Gaztanaga) 40-36. Ezkurra II was +20 -4 (to Urriza's +18 -1) playing an even match with the roster's best front court player (and being in the thick of a 6-0 run that turned a 9-12 deficit into a 15-12 lead). Garces played a brilliant match on defense against Urriza's attack and also contributed +13 (including 7 service aces) -1 (1 service fault) to his team's effort. And in the end his winner provided the 40th point, which knocked his 2018 Championship partner out of  this year's Final.

Barrenetxea IV claimedthe best back court ratio in the entire tournament +22, in addition to the most winners of any back court player in all the matches scored by Oriamendi2010. He had a monstrous day in defeat. S-E reached their goal of 26 points easily after taking a big early lead. They might have lost concentration for a while (note the 17-4 run that go G-B back into the match. But from there, with basically nothing left to play for, S-E still found a way to win. They finished with a 6-0 record and a Final with

Mano: Eskuz Banakako Txapelketa-Campeonato Manomanista De Lep.M 2019--1/16 Round

Eskuz Banakako Txapelketa-Campeonato Manomanista De Lep.M, the premier professional Mano singles championship competition, began  on April 14, 2019 with two play-in matches. It will end on June 2, 2019 with a final. It is a seeded ladder knockout tournament consisting of 4 1/16 round play in matches, followed by seeded 1/8 and Quarter-finals. Quarter final winners will play a Semi-final and Semi-final winners will play in the final. There will also be a third place match.

The competition will be in four Groups (A-D). The seeding works as follows:

The four matches in the 1/16 level were not competitive. They were won by 14, 16, 9, and 11 points. There were leads of 12-2, 17-3, 17-7, and 19-12. Only the Victor-Bakaikoa match was remotely competitive. It is difficult to draw any conclusions from these matches. It is possible that there is a gem or two in here, who will give problems to the 1/8 seeds. The match ups are listed below. One never knows, and that's why they play the matches. But it seems to me that only the Artola v Jaka match might be competitive. I hope that I am wrong and there are four great matches. We'll just have to wait and see.

Main Nue--Tounois du Jambone--1st Esku Pilota tournament of 2019

The Tournois du Jambone, at Trinquet Moderne, Bayonne (1) (2), was played on April 18 and 20, 2019.  (Source for all TdJ scores: Esku Pilota Resultats)

The most interesting thing about this tournament was that it was the "coming out" party for Maxime Etcheverry and Bixente Garat, talented young players who played as substitutes in the FFPB Elite Pro par Equipes Competition (more on them, including match videos for both, can be seen in the Round 4 Qualification post). Alas, in the end the experience of Aguirre and Benesse won out over the last half of the Final, with a 19-12 run at the end being decisive. But the two youngsters showed what they could do, using a 20-10 run to pave the way for them to advance to the final.

Main Nue--FFPB Championnat de France Par Equipes (Pairs)--Info About Competition--List of Winners Back to 2007--Semi-Finals

The 2019 FFPB (Federation Francaise de Pelote Basque) Championnat de France par Equipes (pairs) Tournament began on March 10, 2019 and will end with a final on May 5. There will be two competitions, Group A and Group B. 20 players are  involved. FFPB has provided a "dossier" (.pdf format, 9p.) explaining how the tournament works and who the players in each group are.
The competition begins with a round robin League in both groups. The fifth place finishers in each group are eliminated. Then the 1st place finisher in Group B plays against the 4th place finisher in Group A. The winner plays in the Group A Semi-finals as the #4 team. The loser plays in the Group B Semi-finals as the #2 team (if the A team is demoted). This is a twist that makes the competition very interesting. A Group B team has a chance to be promoted within the space of one competition. The semi-finals will be #1-#4 and #2-#3 in each group. The winners meet in Finals on April 28 (Group A) and May 5 (Group B).

With the score 32-18 I-A, this was looking like anything but a competitive match. But then O-I put on a tremendous 15-2 run to get to within 1. Alas, they ran out of steam and fell in the end, but not before one of the best rallies in a long time.

The defending champions bowed out, but not without a struggle, fighting back from 6, 9 , and 13 point deficits as the match progressed, showing remarkable fighting ability, but never got "over the hump,"as O-D scored 3 of the last 4 points to finish what must have been an extremely frustrating match for W-G.
