Remonte--Orona Fundazioa 49th Campeonato/Parejas (Pairs Championship) (November 14-December 28, 2019)

Orona Fundazioa 49th Campeonato Parejas (Pairs Championship)--November 14-December 28, 2019)

This was the premier Oriamendi2010 pairs tournament. It had a new and unique format this year. The competition consisted of 5 Oriamendi2010 teams:

Oriamendi2010 Player Roster

(A or B) is the Oriamendi2010 Group.

1. Uterga-Azpiroz (A-B)
2. Urriza-Larranaga (A-B)
3. Matxin III-Endika (A-A)
4. Ansa II-Ion (B-A)
5. Juanenea-Barrenetxea IV (B-A)

The first round was a single round robin:

Team Scoring (by match--matches to 40)
40=4pts
36-39=2pts
32-35=1pt
26-31=0pts
< 26 = -1pt

In addition the INDIVIDUAL SCORE of each player by position was added game by game in the following manner (the individual matchups were by position--delantero (front) v delantero and zaguero (back) v zaguero)

Top scorer (winners minus errors)=4 pts. No. 2 =2pts.

A combination of individual+pair scoring determined the top 3 pairs to move into the second round. Those pairs were constituted as follows:

1st place delantero (front)-3rd place zaguero (back)

2nd-2nd

3rd-1st

In essence this was a switching of partners between rounds, making for 2 separate competitions, and likely penalizing the 1st place winners of the League phase, giving the advantage to the team with two 2nd place finishers. Xanti Uterga made it known (according to a Diario Vasco article) that he was going to drop out of the competition after the 1st League Round because of a philosophical disagreement concerning the partner switch. Ultimately, he dropped out due to an injury suffered after the end of the League round in a non-Championship match (see below for both aspects of the story).

There was a semi-final league single round robin using the team scoring above. The top two teams met in the final on December 28.

Most matches were Star Matches (2nd matches of Oriamendi2010's 4 match program).

Note: Source for all articles, linescores, and scoring, unless otherwise specifically stated, is Oriemendi2010.

List of results (Oriamendi2010 database)

As always with competitions of this duration, read from the bottom up in order to follow chronologically.

Results are provided below, along with match articles, match statistics, cumulative tables and "leader boards" (organized by player position--delanero  and zagueros). The source for all statistics is Oriamendi2010 match articles. For the Final, EITB statistics are given for comparison to Oriamendi2010. Statistics were not provided  for all players for all matches. I have attempted to provide averages to equalize statistics for all players. I have also attempted to provide the number of matches players' raw statistics were based on.

Below the competition section is a section that provides a history of the winners of this competition, with selected links to match articles and videos, going back to 1943.

Scoring (Oriamendi2010) Note: this scoring will be used for the final "leader board" (see below) in order to keep the sources consistent. EITB scoring will also be presented to illustrate the difference in scoring.

Urriza +19 -4; Larranaga +10(including 6 service aces) -3(including 1 service fault)
Matxin III +19 -6; Barrenetxea IV +11(5a) -5

Total scoring for the match: +59 (.766) -18 (.234)

Scoring: EITB

Urriza +17 -5; Larranaga +10 -6
Matxin III +16 -9; Barrenetxea IV +10 -4

Total Scoring for the Match: +53 (.688) -24 (.312)

Balls in play: 483 (EITB)
Urriza 142; Larranaga 101; Matxin III 99; Barrentxea IV 141

Non-error %: .950

Time of the match: 85:37 (including a 5:45 delay at 39-37 after Matxin III was hit on the achilles by an errant Larranaga shot).
Balls per point: 6.27
Time per point 1:02 (not counting the injury time) (no playing time was given)

Saves: 138
Urriza 38; Larranaga 22; Matxin III 35; Barrenetxea IV 43

Saves %: .286

"Saves" are the number of times a player made an excellent defensive play to keep a point alive. Sometimes the point was lost anyway. Sometimes not. What constitutes a save in any modality is unique to that modality. If you have ever watched a Remonte match, you will know that a high percentage of returns are saves, due to the implement used and the speed of the modality. But each save is a subjective judgment by the scorer (me)   :) . Yours may be different. For Remonte, I gave a save for any rebote (rebound off the back wall) because of the difficulty of executing the shot. Also for any return where the cesta was against the left wall, running and/or diving on the apron, returns while the player was on his knees, back foot returns, difficult scoops or short hops, among others. The point of this exercise is to begin a conversation on defense and its importance in the modality. Any  feedback would be welcome.

This was a brilliant match, about as exciting as a Remonte match can be. In the end, the best player in the modality today (IMHO) did what a best player does. He took over the match. With his team down 28-30, he scored 8 winners of their final 12 points, finally erasing the deficit that they had fought all match to overcome (see the "map" above). In the final analysis this match was "too much Urriza" for M-B to overcome. At 38, Javier Urriza still had too much power and too much touch, and an amazing sense for the dramatic, just as all great players do.

This competition didn't start out that way. In a lackluster performance (one in which the match article called him "gris y agarrotado" [Google Translate: "grey and exhausted"]), Urriza and his 1st partner, Larranaga were crushed 40-26, barely avoiding losing a League point, as well as coming up short on the individual scoring (see November 16 below). It seemed that they might be finished before they started. After a win, they lost 40-38 to the competition favorites Uterga (who was looking for his 4th consecutive and 5th overall championship) and his first (and only) partner Azpiroz.

U-L then won a crucial match over Ansa II-Ion 40-34, to finish their League round robin at 2-2 with enough individual points for both to move on to the Semi-final league. But not with each other. Or so it seemed. Uterga-Azpiroz won the League phase at 4-0, and both individually finished in 1st place. By this time, Uterga had made it known that he was going to drop out of the competition because of the format, which he disagreed with. As it turned out, he eventually dropped out due to an injury, but his absence resulted in Urriza continuing to play with Larranaga, the only team that kept continuity between the two rounds. (See full explanation below under December 12 match.)

And Urriza began to "click" during the semi-finals. In U-L's perfect Semi-final round robin (2-0), he was +47 -3, including an almost impossible +29 -2 in the 2nd match.  Anything but "gris y agarrotado". And he finished with +19 -4 and 38 saves in the Final. So a grand total of +66 -7 in his final 3 matches. There are no adjectives left to describe that kind of performance. One can only watch and marvel.

All four players played well. Barrenetxea IV showed why he is the best back in the modality today, with tremendous mobility both left &  right and up and back. He made a diving apron save during the 64th point (one of 3 he made on the point) that simply can't be made in this modality (1:48:35-1:49:01 on the video). His 3rd save was a rebote that he turned into a winner. He had 45 saves in the match.

Matxin III also sparkled, helping establish his team's lead in the early going. On the 72nd point, he scored with a two wall shot (1:57:25-1:59:06 on the video). Urriza playfully kicked him in the rear in admiration.

Larranaga, the sole "B" player in this match, played solid defense and kept points alive for Urriza to finish.

There was controversy near the end, when, at 37-36, a Barrentxea IV outside winner was called out of play. It was a clear error that the fans were not happy with. And a frightening moment at 39-36 when an errant Larranaga return crashed into Matxin III's achilles. He was down for a long time and then had to go off the court for treatment that took over 5 minutes. He had hardly returned when Urriza finished the proceedings with yet another winner.

It was Urriza's 3rd championship, but 1st since 2012 (when he won with Barrenetxea IV). Larranaga won his 1st. Barrenetxea IV has now split 2 Finals. Matxin III played in his second final. Among delanteros Patxi Zeberio (Zeberio II--a 25 year veteran still active at the age of 45) leads all time with 7 wins in 8 tries. Uterga is 2nd with 4. For zagueros Urteaga and Agerre (2 players from the helmetless zaguero era) have won 4 (1979, 81, 82, 85 and 86, 87, 88, 91 respectively). Eizagirre has also won 4 (92, 94, 95, and 2002).

M-B earned a place in the Final, but it wasn't easy. They needed to win and hold J-A to under 36 points to gather the team points they needed to advance. They did so, by 1 point. And at 34-35, J-A could see a place in the Finals. One more point. But then Juanenea collapsed (see above), and M-B (the only A-A) pair in the competition, took advantage and shut them out of the match and out of the competition.

***Only 1 -score was given for this match. 1 was inferred. Only 3 +scores were given and it was not possible to infer the 4th. Obviously, this is an under-estimation of the total scoring. I have attempted to normalize this by doing an average cumulative score and percentage, while also providing the total known scoring and percentage

In spite of a fantastic 31-19 run that wiped out an early 10 point lead and actually put them in the lead, J-A could not survive the incredible onslaught of Javier Urriza. He put together an almost impossible game, +29 -2 in sweeping away all in his path, as he moved his team into the final. In his 6 matches in this competition (5 of which we have complete scoring for), Urriza is now +107 (.892) -13 (.108).

As for J-A, their 2 team points did not help them much. They must win the final Liga match against Matxin III-Barrenetxa IV, or go home. The same goes for their opponents. There is a final mystery however. If M-B win but J-A score 36 or more points, they will tie in team points at 4. In that case either point differential or their results against common opponents will tilt the scale to J-A. M-B's massive loss to U-L on Thursday left them in need of a dominant win, holding their opponents to less than 36 points, to advance.

Beginning of Semi-Final Liga (single round robin).

December 12

At this point, the Semi-Final matchups should have been:

Uterga (#1 delantero)-Larranaga (#3 zaguero)
Urriza (#2)-Barrenetxea IV (#2)
Matxin III (#3)-Azpiroz (#1)

However, in a non-championship match (Oriamendi2010 has a program of 4 matches each Thursday and Saturday, of which this Championship was part of each program), Uterga was injured and had to drop out of the tournament.  As mentioned above, he was going to drop out anyway, because he disagreed with the format. And judging by the matchups, he had good reason to, in my opinion. With Uterga out, all of the fronts moved up a place, putting Juanenea, who had an unfortunate end (see below), back into the Semi-final Liga. So the matchups were:

Urriza (#1)-Larranaga (#3)
Matxin III (#2)-Barrenetxea IV (#2)
Juanenea (#3)-Azpiroz (#1)

Semi-final Liga Match 1

Urriza-Larranaga (#1-#3) (A-B) (1-0; 4; +11) 40
Matxin III-Barrenetxea IV (#2-#2) (A-A) (0-1; 0; -11) 29

Matxin III +12 -5; Barrenetxea IV +11* (6a) -5 (including 2 service faults)

*=inferred from the other scores

Total scoring in the match: +53 (.768) - 16 (.232)

U-L broke open a close match about 1/4 of the way through, with an 11-3 run. That established an 8 point lead that they built throughout the rest of the match, as high as 12 points. Urriza's almost perfect game was marred by only one error, coming at 39-28. After beginning this tournament with a 16 point loss in which he was +14 -6 and described in the match article as "gris y agarrato" ("grey and exhausted") he finished the rest of the Liga +46 -4 (in matches we have data for). With today's performance, he is now +78 -11 in the 4 matches in this competition we have data for (average: +19 -3).

Liga Jornada (Day) 8

December 7

Juanenea-Barrenetxea IV (B-A) (2-2 +29) 40
Matxin III-Endika (A-A) (1-3 -14) 18
(A-B 2-1; A-A 1-2)

No linescore available.

No scoring available: Note: Endika received 2 individual points but the team lost a point, so he added only 1, finishing with 19 total points. Matxin III and Juanenea tied in their scoring, leaving both (Matxin III 3 individual points -1 team points=20 total points, and Juanenea 3 individual points +4 team points=20 total points.) Matxin III advanced based on his 11 individual points to Juanenea's 9.

Urriza-Larranaga (A-B) (2-2 -3) 40
Ansa II-Ion (A-B) (1-3 -27) 34

Selected linescore (winners always listed 1st)

18-11; 24-17; 31-22; 32-3036-34 (Urriza scores the final 4 points, including 3 consecutive 2 wall winners) 40-34

No scoring available. Urriza and Larranaga both received 4 individual and 4 team points. Urriza finished with 24 total points. Larranaga gained 8 points (4 individual and 4 team) to finish with 20 total points. He advanced to the Semi-final league by 1 point over Endika (see above).

Urriza took matters into his own hands in this match, personally closing out A-I with the winners listed above.

Again, it is unfortunate that no actual scoring was provided.

LIGA FINAL CUMULATIVE SCORING (10 matches)

+421 (.751) -141 (.249)
24 points from the November 30 match and 132 points from the two December 7 matches were not scored.

The final two Liga matches provided a wild ending to that phase. J-B crushed M-E, which cost Endika a place in the Semi-final Liga. He was overtaken by Larranaga, who added 8 points to his ledger in U-L's victory over A-I. Endika's 1 point left him on the outside looking in, something very few thought would happen. Urriza's 8 points allowed him to advance easily after a difficult start. Matxin III and Juanenea, amazingly, tied for total points and, even though Matxin III was on the wrong end of a 22 point loss, he barely scraped through on overall individual points.

Perhaps the real winners were Urriza and Barrentxea IV. Both their teams finished 2-2 in the Liga, but they both finished 2nd in total points. Uterga had a magnificent, undefeated Liga competition, but he now moves on with 3rd place Larranaga. And 3rd place Matxin III teams with 1st place Azpiroz, who also had an undefeated Liga. Anything can happen, as the Liga showed. But Urriza-Barrenetxea IV would have to be favored, in my opinion. We shall see beginning December 12.

Azpiroz returned to action after his ankle injury last Thursday and helped propel his team to another victory, this time a very close affair that was in doubt until the 78th point. Uterga-Azpiroz finished the Liga phase with a perfect 4-0 record. The 16 team points provided a strong foundation that helped them both add enough individual points to qualify for the Semi-final Liga. They will have new partners who will not be determined until the final two matches of the Liga phase on Saturday, December 5. About the only thing that has been established about the rest of the Semi-final Liga is that fronts Juanenea & Ansa II, and backs Ion & Larranaga have a very narrow path to advancement. They both need huge wins (preferably holding their opponents to less than 26 points and causing them to lose a team point), as well as win their individual battles. That is a very "tall order" but still a possibility. Thus the organizers of the Tournament, along with fans, will be able to enjoy a Liga that is going "down to the wire."

As far as the match was concerned, it was very hard fought (taking about an hour and 1/2 according to the match article). Urriza had another brilliant match (+21 -2), running his total net score to +50 with 1 match left. But it wasn't enough this time, as he made an error on the 39-38 point to seal the win for U-A. Azpiroz outscored Larranaga by a net +7, a separation that was pivotal to the outcome.

There is no way to calculate what either of their individual scores was. This is the first occurrence in this tournament of a complete lack of data for information that is crucial in determining who advances. Knowing that one player had a higher net score than another is, of course, all the information we really need to know, but the chroniclers of this tournament fell short on this occasion, in my opinion.

Next to no information was provided in the match article, except to say that it was a close match. We did find out that Matxin III became a father on November 28; many congratulations to him and his family. Uterga clinched a place in the Semi-final league and he has been perfect, with 3 double wins so far. The article did say he made more errors than usual in this match, many on 2 wall attempts that failed. It is astonishing to think of what his numbers might have been had he been as lethal with the 2 wall as he usually is. And the effect that might have had on M-E' s team points.

Brilliant play by Barrenetxea IV sparked a 10-2 run that gave his team a 5 point lead. The last 16 points of the match were split, leaving the losers one point short of an extra team point, which leaves Ansa II one point short of a Semi-final delantero league place with one match to play in the Liga phase. Barrenetxea IV, with his third consecutive position win, continues in the thick of the race for a zaguero place in the Semi-finals. Ion's chances faded with the double loss.

Urriza came up with a monster game exactly when his team needed it (net +23, the highest net + of the tournament so far), as U-L broke away from a 1st half stalemate to win the 2nd half 19-12. The 7 point win held J-B to only 1 team point. For Urriza it was a very profitable day, adding 8 points to his total score and moving into 3rd place among the fronts with with 10 points. Although J-B lost decisively, Barrenetxea IV outscored Larranaga to give him 5 total points (11 cumulative) and sole possession of 3rd place among the backs. This match finished the 1st 1/2 of the Liga round robin. Everyone is still in contention, but Juanenea and Ansa II among the fronts, along with Ion and Larranaga among the backs are starting to feel some pressure.

A 10-1 run in the 2nd quarter of the match set up an easy win for U-A. They both also won their individual battles, leaving Uterga with a perfect 16 points through 2 matches and Azpiroz with 14. They are in the drivers' seat for 2 of the 6 Semi-final League slots. Uterga is having a great tournament so far with +39 -7 in his two matches. Of course, if both U and A make the Semi-final League, they will not be paired together, one of the fascinating aspects of this format. It is admittedly complex, but that makes it even more fun, in my opinion. For the first time in the competition, a team (A-I) lost a point, but A-I are still in 3rd position going into this week's matches. But their closest pursuers, Juanenea and Barrenetxea IV have played one less match. J-B's match against Urriza-Larranaga on November 28 will put both of them into good position to move on if they win. U-L are in dire straits, but a win would put them right back in contention.

The 2nd of 3 matches so far was decided by the miminum. Key was a 16-2 run by the winners that erased their early 15-26 deficit and put them into a 31-28 lead. They were ahead 39-37 and on the cusp of victory when Ansa II made consecutive errors to force the match to the final point. Endika's error then secured the victory. Ion was the star of the match with +16 -1, which earned him 4 player points.

The tournament began with an incredibly exciting match, with 10 equal scores, including at 36, 37, 38, and 39. Juanenea was brilliant during this part of the match, scoring each of his team's points with 2 wall winners. All the more painful when his error gave his opponents the match. The winners established a 5 point lead and then held on to it for the next 5 points. Then J-A roared back to tie the match at 23. It was the first of 8 equal scores to 39. In the individual scoring table Uterga's net +14 gave him the delantero's 4 points, while on the losing side Barrenetxea IV's net +8 allowed him to edge out Azpiroz by 1 point for zaguero honors. As the tables below show, players must not only play to win, but also battle for every point. It is a unique, and, in my opinion, ingenious way to score a tournament. We don't know who will be in the semi-finals, or who will be partnering. The only format I know of that even remotely resembles this one is the Pala Larga Mundo Parejas, where partnerships change every match.
