Fronton Mexico Recurring Results Page--through Apr .29, 2017

As Fronton Mexico opens its season, the amount of information released about the actual matches begins to become available. It is expected that this information will be formalized via FM's various electronic outlets, in the way, perhaps, that Oriamendi2010 covers Remonte in the Basque Country. While we wait for that day to arrive, this page will attempt to gather information about FM Star matches as I find it. I will also keep a table of Star match players' records if possible. A lot depends on how serious FM is about disseminating its results. We shall see.

esto.com.mx (this link will search esto.com.mx for relevant FM articles. Retrieval is defaulted to  "relevance" order. Click on the the "ordinare por" box and select "Date" for retrieval in chronological order). esto.com,mx is the best source at present for match coverage. It does not cover every Star match, but it does cover more than found at any other source. It was also discovered through research at Jai Alai News Facebook. (Added April 15, 2017).

Ongoing search of Google News for relevant, up to date articles (this is experimental. It may or may not work).

Note: I call the players substitutes when they are different from the players scheduled on the Fronton Mexico Facebook page. Matchups are subject to change without notice, as clearly announced on the Facebook page.

Note: On March 30, 2017, I added a "B" group table. It has been cumulated from the beginning of the season and is up to date through the present. It is located below the Star Match table.

IMPORTANT NOTE: On March 31 a table was published on the FM Twitter feed that had a complete record of all 33 partidos (including Star Matches) through March 28. Source: Marcos Ari Twitter feed. Track back to March 30, 2017. His findings and mine agree for the Star matches. They do not agree for the B group matches. In fact he has more information than I do and I have found errors in my table from comparing to his table. I will defer to his table for the B matches. I will start a new one.

Here is the table, ordered by match record. This B table covers March 10-28: We will start over from here. I will not keep points for-against in this table for now.

Egiguren +14 (including 1 service ace) -1; Ekhi +5 -2
Olha +4 (including 1 service ace) -3; Inza +8 -6

E-E used four small runs (4-0 and 3 3-0), as well as one extended run (8-2) to easily defeat O-I. Egiguren was the star of a match that seemed a bit anti-climactic after yesterday's epic. But it did have its moments. Below are a few:

Note: for all video highlights, times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

Txabi Inza'a brilliant return of serve (entire 2nd video) bounced over Lopez' leaping attempt at a catch to give O-I an exciting win over L-L. L-L had stormed back from a 29-26 deficit to tie the match and force a last point showdown. It was Lopez' third consecutive heart breaking loss (by a total of 4 points--and 2nd 1 point loss with Ludovic Laduche) in the last week. The match had errors, to be sure, but was played at an incredibly high level of skill and intensity. All 4 players put on a clinic in the various ways to catch a pelota and win a point. My notes had ! next to 17 points.

L-L built an early 8-3 lead that was fueled by 3 nice Laduche winners (the best one being 1-3--1-4 (11 balls in play--1:02:43--1:01:51), and a Lopez 2 wall shot from behind the 10 line (2-5--2-6, 8bip--59:20--58:37). From there it was a long fightback by O-I which ended with a 12-3 run that gave them a 21-16 lead. It featured Olharan:  two 2 walls (10-13--11-13, 15bip--44:55--43:33; 14-14--15-14, 9bip--37:03--36:22) and a chic-chac (15-14--16-14, 17bip, 35:51--34:32). From 21-16, Lopez made his mark on the match. He scored 8 of his 11 winners, including a 2 wall shot from the 9 line (27-24--27-25, 6bip--9:42--9:10) and a cortada from the 11 line (29-27--29-28, 3bip--2:40--2:22), to bring his team back. After Olharan overthrew what looked like a sure match winner, Inza finished things off.

Other highlights:

1. 6-10--7-10: 4bip. Inza + (53:48--53:07)

2. 7-10--8:10: 7bip. Olharan duels Lopez...and wins (52:47--52:12)

3. 8-10--8-11: 4bip. Laduche wall climb and + (51:51--51:27)

4. 9-12--9-13: 11bip. One of the better points of the match Laduche + (47:54--47:02)

5. 22-18--22-20: 17,7bip. Spotlight on Lopez--2+ in the "clutch) (23:12--20:20)

For the second time in 4 days an Egiguren winner ended a very close match. And for the second time in 4 days, Lopez, despite late match heroics, was on the short end of the score. It was not the best played match this season (21 errors by my count), but it had an ebb and flow (5 lead changes and 8 equal scores) that kept things very interesting. The first 20 points were even, but then E-E put together an 8-0 run. consisting of 4 Egiguren winners ( two of them--13-10--15-10: 40:05--38:05 were very well executed) and, quite uncharacteristically, 3 Lopez errors. But L-S responded immediately with a 5 point run of their own, featuring 2 very nice Sierra winners (18-10--18-12--35:03--34:35 and 32:01--31:40) and an excellent Lopez winner (18-14--18-15: 30:37--30:10). L-S stayed within 3 points until Egiguren ended the best (in my opinion) and longest point of the match (20-17--21-17: 26:17--24:50). From there E-E began to pull away, to 27-23, before the late match heroics of Lopez--a cortada (28-24--28-25: 6:35--5:45), a chic-chac or chula (28-25--28-26: 5:29--4:50), and a 2 wall shot--29-27--29-28: 2:30--2:00) got L-S within striking distance. And that is when Egiguren ended the festivities (0:58--0:40).

Other highlights:

1. 4-5--5-5: 6 balls in play. Egiguren-Lopez duel won by Eiguren (56:17--55:40)

2. 21-17--22-17: 7 bip. Ekhi + (2 wall from a galaxy far far away) (22:08--21:25)

1. Juan Leon-Cordova defeated Ortega-Dosal 1-0 (15-8, 14-14) The second set was suspended at 14-14 when Cordova suffered an injury. The Twitter feed said"

Nuestro segundo set fue Espectacular! Sin embargo, por la lesión de Córdova, los azules ganan el segundo encuentro con marcador final de 14-14

Google Translate:

Our second set was Awesome! However, by the injury of Cordova, the blues win the second encounter with final score of 14-14.

I interpret that to mean that JL-C were awarded the match even though Cordova was the one forced to retire, that FM interprets whoever is ahead when a suspension happens wins the match, no matter which team the injured player is on,  This is the first time that I know of that the winning team had the player that retired with an injury. I will continue to interpret suspensions this way until I find out a different interpretation, if there is one.

An interesting finish was on the cards for this match when Christophe was injured and had to retire. A 9-4 run by O-D gave them the initiative early (12-9). Olha (who retrieved a very long Ekhi two wall attempt and scored--37:02--36:34) began the run, and an Olha rebote (28:56--28:18) followed by 2 Del Rio winners in succession (27:46--25:56) ended it. 5 C-E errors in between (including the all of Ekhi's errors for the night) helped. From there the errors on both sides pretty much stopped and the match was well played. C-E fought back to 17-16 and 18-17 but another 3 point spurt by O-D (one of which was the point of the match (15 balls in play, 19-17--20-17--10:45--9:37) opened the lead to 4 again. C-E had cut that lead to 3 when the match unfortunately ended. Note: for most of this match, the video was of very good quality. The ball can be clearly seen in much of it.

Mikel Egiguren threw a perfect left wall shot from behind the 6 line (entire 2nd video) that passed Ludovic Laduche and landed before Imanol Lopez could reach it, to win the final point of a tightly contested and very entertaining match. Egiguren feinted a two wall shot and Laduche moved toward the apron. By the time he realized it wasn't a two wall shot, it was too late. FM kindly produced a video of the last point after the match video failed. It is taken from a different angle and, if you look at the video screen when the back court players become involved, you can see it perfectly. This was the 2nd match won by the minimum in the last 3 Star Matches. Egiguren was playing his first Star Match since April 2. The match was at 6-3 when the video began. 4 consecutive winners (3 by Egiguren (57:39--49:45) gave E-E their biggest lead at 14-8. From there, L-L fought back in fits and starts, but a long chic-chac or chula by Egiguren (22:54--21:40) that ended a 15 ball point gave E-E a 23-19 lead. From there Lopez scored 7 of his 11 winners (by my count). That spurt (see highlights below) featured a two wall shot from behind the 12 line, a chula, and two magnificent cortadas that tied the match at 28 and 29.

The L-L pairing was in interesting one. Lopez, the great long time professional, made big plays when it mattered, while Laduche, who has limitless potential (in my opinion), but is young and inexperienced, also made big plays when it mattered, but struggled with his serve. He began points quickly with his serve in the early part of the match, but at crunch time he took much more time. From 19-17, he had 5 pasas, faulted twice, and failed to clear the front at 23-23 and 24-25. He also had 3 very nice winners to help keep his team in the game. He is a very gifted player who is wonderful to watch, and, I suspect, will learn much from these kind of matches. This was his 6th Star Match, by far the most of any of the young front court players on the roster. The only young player who has played in more is Ekhi.

Other highlights:

1. 14-10--15-10: 4 balls in play. Etcheto + (2 walls from 13 line) (46:06--45:40)

2. 15-11--15-12: 11 bip. Laduche + (cortada) (44:51--43:40)

Tambourindeguy had a great match to lead his team to victory. The match turned on the 17-16--18-16 point (26:36--26:10). Tambourindeguy's serve did not clear the front and Olha easily won the point with a dejada... only he didn't. Tambourindeguy came out of nowhere to retrieve the thow and won the point with a long throw. It was the second point of an 11-2 run that put the match away. As if to emphasize the point, Tambourindeguy did it again (17:54--17:37), retrieving an Olha two wall throw after another serve that didn't clear the front and passed him on the inside.. The next point (17:01-15:25) Tambourindeguy finished one of the best points of the night (15 bip) with another two wall winner. At 25-17 the match was decided.

Other highlights:

Star Match: Christophe (substituting for Egiguren)-Lopez (red) defeated (Olharan Substituting for Laduche)-Etxeto (blue) 30-29. The original match was scheduled as a 2 v 3 match (Egiguren-Lopez v Laduche-Christophe-Etxeto). Egiguren was unable to play (see the pitlane.mx match article for the April 13 match--also linked below). The article says that Egiguren is unavailable to to a "health problem."

This match was done and dusted at 28-23. But don't tell that to Jean Olharan. He scored 4 consecutive points (5:28--1:02) and served for the tie when the Facebook feed suddenly ended. It is unfortunate, because it would have been great to see. The linescore shows that  C-L built 5 point leads at 19-14, 20-15, and 26-21, and 28-23. In the end it was just a little too much for Olharan's fireworks to overcome. The match started slowly, with more errors than expected, but then got a lot better. Christophe, in my opinion, had the most consistent match. But Olharan's finish is what people will remember. The big, enthusiastic crowd was "into" the match throughout.

Other highlights.

1. 5-4--6-4: 13 balls in play. Lopez + (53:54--53:00)

2. 8-7--8-8: 8 bip. Etxeto +  (48:10--47:32)

Longest point: 14 (6-7--7-7)

In a match that that had 5 lead changes and was tied 12 times, O-D put together a 5 point run (17-20--22-20) fueled by 3 O-I errors to retake a lead they hadn't held since 5-4. But O-I fought back into the lead 3 times before an Olha winner gave O-D an insurmountable lead (29-27). O-I led by as many as 7 points at the half-way point before a 13-4 run gave O-D their 22-20 lead. It wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing match you'll ever see, but it was one of the more exciting ones. And, as always, when players of this caliber compete, even if it isn't the greatest game, it has great moments. A sample is given below.

Note: for all video highlights, times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

Highlights:

1. 1-2--2-2: 5 balls in play. Ohlaran falling rebote from the apron in front of the 10 line. Olha returns dejada to win the point. (57:35--57:12)

2. 8-13--8-14: 3 bip. Olharan slips and serves while he is falling. Olha takes the serve and goes two walls but by this time Olharan has recovered, gets to the pelota and wins the point. (39:11--38:59).

3. 12-17--13-17: 4 bip. Olha does a 1 step wall climb to an Olharan rebote and then wins the point with a dejada (31:22--31:03)

4. 16-19--17-19: 6 bip. Battle at the front wall between the two O's. Del Rio wins the point (27:30--26:46)

5. 17-20--18-20: 10 bip. Ohla--great catch, Del Rio--good running catch, Ihitsague--leaping catch and then throws 2 wall from just inside the 10 line on the right, Ohla crashes into the fence to get it and throws a winner (25:36--24:53)

6. 24-24--24-25: 6 bip. Olha falling rebote from 10 line. Ihitsague runs up from the 11 to the 5 line and wins the point with a cortada. (13:38--13:11)

7. 26-25--27-26: 4 bip and 2 bip. Ihitsague makes a great catch and fires a winner. Del Rio immediately returns the favor (watch Del Rio's catch and throw on the video screen at the front of the court (9:32--7:28)

8. 28-27--29-27: 11 bip. Great back court play by Del Rio and Ihitsague. Olha wins the point. (4:25--3:37)

Star Match: Sierra-Lopez (red) defeated Tambourindeguy-Ekhi (blue) 30-28

Match article (pitlane.mx via Jai Alai News Facebook page) The article discusses the decision to change the first match from a 30 point partido to a best 2 out of 3 sets (15 points, with the tie breaker to 5). It is an experiment and and has never been tried at FM before. It is hoped to provide variety for fan and wagerer alike. (added April 15, 2017).

Match video (video begins at 14-11 S-L)

Condensed linescore (winners always listed 1st)

13-11; 14-11; 14-12; 17-12; 17-14; 18-14; 18-16; 19-16; 19-19; 21-19; 21-20; 22-20; 22-21; 23-21; 23-22; 24-22; 24-23; 25-23; 25-26; 28-26; 28-27; 29-27; 29-28; 30-28

This was the best Star Match so far. Video is available for only about the last half, but there are a match's worth of highlights. 4 S-L winners (3 by Lopez), sandwiched around an unfortunate Tambourindeguy service fault (he had an excellent match and made one incredible play) helped S-L come back from a 25-26 deficit to win. The first match under the new scheduling was played to a pretty much packed house. The video is a little difficult to watch because the angle is slightly different, but it does allow you to watch (if you watch closely) play in the back of the court. As soon as you know the play will be in the back, watch the video screen, which is clearly visible in the front. Not the best, but you can actually see the play. There were some great points (see below), and a bit of a scare when Lopez took an awkward fall. But he recovered and, indeed, finished the match off with a winner. The atmosphere, which comes through better in this match because you can see the crowd, was electric.

Note: for all video highlights, times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

Highlights:

1. 17-13--17-14: 11 balls in play: Lopez two wall rebote from behind the 9 line is retrieved by Tambourindeguy on the apron near the fence. In one underhand motion he returns a perfect dejada to win the point. (35:20--34:09). Not quite Olharan's "play of the summer" last year, but close :)

2. 19-16--19-17: 14 bip. Ekhi throws a two wall from Acapulco. Wins the point. If you watch the screen at the front closely, you can sort of see it. But you can hear it and the announcer calls it. (28:42--27:39)

3. 19-19--20:19: 10 bip. Lopez cortada from the 10 line wins the point (24:45--24:01)

4. 21-20--22:20: 14 bip. A little of everything. Tambourindeguy falling rebote from behind the 7 line and then a rebote from the 10 line, Sierra a great short hop catch, Ekhi falling rebote from just in front of 10 line, Ekhi climbs wall for catch, Lopez wins the point with a rocket from the 10 line. (21:13--20:10)

5. 24-22--24-23: 10 bip. Lopez takes an awkard fall trying for a rebote of a Tambourindiguy long shot. He is down for about 30 seconds before getting up. Match is delayed for about 3 minutes. (14:38--13:10)

6. 24-23--25-23:  4 bip. Nice Sierra cortada wins the point (10:04--9:47)

7. 29-28--30-28:  6 bip. After Tambourindeguy saves the point with a falling rebote from around the 9 line Lopez wins it with a leaping catch and cortada in front of the 10 line. (1:05--0:33).

Star Match:  Tambourindeguy (substituting for Olharan)-Inza (substituting for Etxeto) (blue) defeated Olharan (substituting for Egiguren)-Del Rio (substituting for Inza) (red) 30-21.

Match article (esto.com.mx) The match article, in my opinion, was a bit harsh in its criticism of Del Rio's play in his first Star match. (Added April 11, 2017).

An 8-1 run that took T-I from 10-11 to 18-12, a lead they would slowly increase to their winning margin, was the difference maker in this match. Tambourindeguy's 4 winners (3 two wall) were at the heart of this rally. He won a long (17 ball) rally (31:42--30:21) with a long shot that split the defenders coming from the back wall. Then came perhaps the crux of the match (29:23--28:57). Olharan tracked down a Tambourindeguy 2 wall shot on the apron but slipped and fell. What might have been 12-12 became 13-11. At 15-12, Tambourindeguy executed consecutive 2 wall throws (23:09--21:12). O-D never got closer than 4 points after that. Inza, by my count, had his 2nd consecutive +10 night, his ratio over those two games being +20 -9. Tonight he was top scorer in the match. Olharan was a bit inconsistent on the night, throwing a brilliant ace at 8-7 to tie the score and then faulting at 8-9 to also tie the score. Del Rio became the second "B" player to debut in a Star Match in 2 nights. He throws the pelota very hard and (for one night anyway) preferred overhand and sidearm throws as opposed to the beautiful backhand throws that are the trademark of many back court men. He threw hard but too low to clear Tambourindeguy on several occasions. But he is audacious and fun to watch. His attempted two wall winner from just inside the 14 line was intercepted by Tambourindeguy, but it was eye opening nonetheless.

Other highlights:

1. 5-3--5-4: 2 balls in play: Del Rio scores his first point in a Star Match. (46:08--45:55)

2. 6-5--6-6: 3 balls in play. Very nice Olharan rebote wins the point (42:56--42:39).

3. 7-6--8-6: 7 bip. Inza wins the point with a cortada from the 10 line. (41:34--40:38).

4. 10-10--10-11: 15 bip.  Del Rio throws 2 wall from just in front of the 14 line. Tambourindeguy catches. An Inza error ends the point (34:09--33:06).

Christophe was the star of a very hard fought match (3 lead changes and 6 equalities) that was closer than the final score indicated. An early 5 point run featuring a very nice Christophe rebote from behind the 7 line (41:17-40:46) erased a 6-10 deficit (that was in turn built by a 5-1 O-L run featured by a Lopez chula that ended a short but excellent point (42:28--41:56). The teams battled back and forth until C-E took the final lead with a 6-1 run (13-14--19-15), helped by Ortega errors. O-L then began an fightback with a beautiful long winner by Ortega followed by Lopez catching an outside bullet from Christophe and firing a cortada winner (23:04--21:52). They closed to within 21-19 before 3 consecutive Christophe winners (13:53--11:48) (including two 2 wall winners) put the match out of reach.  Lopez' 5 match winning streak came to an end. Ortega made his debut in Star matches.

Other highlights:

1. 0-1--1-1: 4 balls in play. Christophe 2 wall winner from behind the 9 line (55:42 (beginning of video)--55:00)

2. 5-6--5-7: 10 bip. Very nice catch by Etxeto. Christophe error ends the point. (46:09--45:21)

3. 12-11--12-12: 8 bip. Lopez climbs the left wall. Etxeto error ends the point. (33:20--32:40)

4. 12-12--12:13: 3 bip. Ortega saves a Christope 2 wall winner, fires back a winner of his own. (32:09--31:57)

5. 28-21--28:22: 8 bip. Lopez rebote winner from the 10 line (4:21--3:43)

6: 29-23--30:23: 4 bip: Christophe finishes things off very nicely. (1:16--0:38)

A simple theme for this match is "Great players make great plays." When L-I, who had been trailing most of the night, came roaring back from a 24-18 deficit with a 4-0 run (part of a larger 14-8 run that brought them back from 16-8), S-L needed a great play very badly. They got it from Imanol Lopez. At the end of the longest point of the match (10:48--9:37 on the video) he threw a rebote 2 wall winner from behind the 10 line. It stopped L-I's momentum, but only temporarily. As the linescore shows, L-I kept fighting back, with Laduche making 4 fine plays of his own. The last 3 points of the match were sterling. Sierra raced to the apron to catch a certain Laduche 2 wall winner and sent it right back for a winner of his own (29-25). Laduche quickly returned the favor (29-26). Finally, Lopez put the match away with a perfectly placed shot on the left wall that both Laduche and Inza went for but neither got (5:01--2:51). Sierra had a fine match, his 3 consecutive winners taking the score from 12-8 to 15-8 (34:27--32:51). Inza, very quietly, threw a lot long winners and made, perhaps, the catch of the night. Overall, it was a very well played match.

Other highlights:

1. 1-2--1-3: 4 balls in play.  Lopez rips one. Laduche makes the catch and puts the point away with a dejada (52:05--51:40)

2. 2-3--3-3: 11 bip: Sierra makes a great save. Lopez wins the point. (49:19--48;33)

3. 4-4--5-4: 2 bip. Lopez 2 wall from the 12 line (46:27--46:13)

4. 20-17--21-17: 8 bip. Lopez cortada. (19;22--18:45)

5. 21-18--22-18: 4 bip. Inza makes a great catch. Lopez wins the point. (16:22--15:59)

Star Match: Laduche (substituting for Christophe)-Etxeto (red) defeated Tambourindeguy-Ekhi (blue) 21-16. Ekhi was forced to retire with an injury.

Scoring:  (my judgments, yours may be different). Any serve not returned is, from now on, not necessarily an ace. The very first point of the match, Etcheto easily caught Tambourindeguy's serve, and then wound up and threw it away. This convinced me (a bit late in the game, I suppose), that not all un-returned serves (in this modality anyway) are aces :)

Tambourindeguy +6 (including 1 service ace) -3; Ekhi +7 -2

An injury to Ekhi forced the early end of this match. He went down attempting a rebote from the 11 line (3:43--2:13 on the video).  It is unclear whether it was meant to be a fallling rebote or he fell as he attempted it. He got up immediately, unstrapped his cesta and walked off under his own power. The extent of the injury is unknown at this time. It truncated what was shaping up to be an excellent match. The linescore shows a back and forth battle, with L-E having fended off one major challenge from T-E and beginning to stretch their lead when the match ended. This match was also becoming a showcase for young Ludovic Laduche. Laduche, playing his 4th Star match, looks like a prospect to become a regular among the "A" group. He certainly was making a powerful case in this match, where he was responsible for over 60% of his team's points. He has immense power and touch from the front court, and some of his catching was spectacular last night. Ekhi was also a force to be reckoned with, as the scoring shows, before his injury.

Highlights: Note: times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

1. 3-3--4-3: 16 balls in play. A great point featuring nice catches by Laduche and Ekhi before Laduche finishes with a long shot. (41:11-39:58)

2. 6-3--6-4: 14 bip. Outstanding Laduche catch before Laduche error ends the point. (37:30--36:21)

3. 11-7--12-7: 10 bip. Point of the match, in my opinion. Laduche finishes (23:54--23:10)

4. 14-11--14-12:  8 bip. Very nice finishing falling rebote by Tambourindeguy. (17:03--16:23).

5. 16-15--17-15: 8 bip. Laduche--2 walls. (10:29--9:52).

6. 18-15---19-15: 7 bip. Great catch and throw for chula by Laduche (8:31--7:56)

7. 20-15--20-16: 4 bip. The play before the injury. Very nice long (between 11 and 12 line) throw to the outside by Ekhi (4:33--4:00)

Star Match: Tambourindeguy-Lopez defeated Egiguren-Etxeto 30-26.

Match video (Part 1) (0-0--23-16)

Match video (Part 2) (27-18--30-26)

Technical difficulties led to splitting it into two videos. About 6 points were lost.

Condensed linescore (all but 1 from the video, 1 point was inferred from where the 2nd video began) (winners always listed 1st)

1st video: 1-0; 1-1; 1-2; 2-2; 2-3; 8-3; 8-6; 10-6; 10-8; 12-8; 12-9; 15-9; 15-12; 16-12; 16-15; 22-15; 22-16; 23-16

2nd video resumes play at 26-18

Tambourindeguy +9 (including 3 service aces) -1; Lopez +8 -2
Egiguren +15 (including 2 service aces) -5 (including 2 service faults); Etxeto +6 -4

26+4=30; 24+2=26

All of Tambourindeguy's aces appeared to me to be dropped catches, 2 by Etcheto and 1 by Egiguren.

Number of balls in play on the videos: 326

Number of balls in play: Number of points

0-9: 38
10-19: 10
20: 2

An early 6-0 T-L run, helped by some E-E errors, gave T-L an 8-3 lead. That lead held up in spite of a furious 5-0 E-E run at the end, highlighted by 4 consecutive Egiguren winners. It turned what appeared to be a ho-hum T-L victory into a close, exciting match. The match was also interesting in that it contained quite a few long points, including two of the first 5 points that consumed 20 balls in play. Tambourindeguy featured some nice rebotes, After the early mistakes, everyone played a solid match. And Egiguren at the end, showed just what a factor he can be in the outcome of a match.

Highlights: Note: times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

1st video

1. 10-7--10-8: 5 balls in play. 2 wall winner by Egiguren (31:30--30:05)

2. 12-9--13-9: 12 bip. The point of the night. Everyone features and Lopez finishes it with a winner. (27:00--26:11)

3. 14-9--15-9: 11 bip. Two nice catches by Etxeto before a Tambourindeguy falling rebote wins the point. (22:52--22:01)

2nd video:

3. 28-22--28-25: Egiguren gets his team back in the match. (7:42--3:55)

3-0 (inferred from service order on video); 3-3; 6-3; 6-4; 7-4; 7-5; 9-5; 9-6; 10-6; 10-7; 13-7; 13-8; 15-8; 15-13; 16-13; 16-14; 19-14; 19-15; 21-15; 21-17; 23-17; 23-18; 25-18; 25-19; 28-19; 28-20; 29-20; 29-21; 30-21

Scoring (my judgments, yours may be different). Note: any serve not returned is considered an ace.

Olharan +18 (including 4 service aces) -4 (including 2 service faults); Inza +2 -1
Olha +5 (including 1 service ace) -6; Ekhi +10 -1.

Totals to 27-20 +3-1 before the video = 30-21

Balls in play on the video: 252

O-E chased O-I all night but could never catch them, in a match that was a bit closer than the final score indicated. Half way through it was anyone's match at 16-14. But O-E were able to increase their lead in bits and pieces until the final score was the largest margin of the match. As the scoring indicates, Olharan had a terrific match. Inza's statistics were unimpressive but don't be fooled. He played an excellent match, with the best catching night he's had this season, including very nice save on the apron (see highlights below). Olha started out poorly but improved as the match progressed. And Ekhi is off to a very good start. As recently as December 2016, he played in the Final of Finals in the Xistera Kluba amateur competition (match begins at 1:44:58 on the linked video) in the South Basque Country. Immediately thrown into the Star match spotlight, he is playing very well. His catching is sure and he is unafraid to be a defender with an offense. He threw the best ball of the match, in my opinion, a two wall winner from behind the 13 line. (See highlights below). Hopefully he will continue to play well.

On another issue. Yesterday's match article in esto.com.mx suggested that the players have complained about the slippery nature of the court. Last night I saw players fall 4 times.

Highlights: Note: times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

1. 9-6--10-6. 18 balls in play. Best point of the night. Everyone does well in a point ended by an Olharan winner (42:24--41:12)

2. 11-7--12-7. 3 bip. Olharan a great save of an Olha 2 wall shot (37:58--37:43)

3. 15-9--15-10. 15 bip. Second best point of the night. Great point that spotlights Olharan and Inza before an Olharan error ends the point (30:51--29:47)

4. 15-11--15-12. 11 bip. Inza makes a nice save on apron before Ekhi wins the point (28:03--27:15)

5. 21-16--21-17. 3 bip. A short "battle at the front wall," won by Olha. (13:59--13:48).

6. 23-17--23-18. 10 bip. Ekhi wins the point with a 2 wall winner from behind the 13 line (listen closely and watch Olharan's change in direction). Compare to the 2 wall winner Ekhi threw from the 11 line in the Mar. 28 match below. (11:17--10:28).

7. 29-21--30--21. 8 bip. Olharan finishes it off with a rebote that ends as either a chic-chac or chula. (1:35--0:59)

Laduche was spotlighted by the Twitter commentary for his great remates. His team was also noted for its great rebotes, and I assume at least some of those were his also. See the March 22 Star match article below and watch that video to see just how fearless a player, especially with respect to body meeting floor to keep a point going, he is.

Star match: Christophe-Lopez defeated Olha-Inza 30-12

Match article (esto.com.mx) (added March 31, 2017)

Match video  (begins at 1-0 C-L)

Condensed linescore: (winners always listed 1st)

8-0; 8-2; 13-2; 13-3; 16-3; 16-6; 17-6; 17-7; 18-7; 18-8; 19-8; 19-9; 20-9; 20-10; 23-10; 23-12; 30-12

Scoring (my judgments--yours may be different)

Christophe +16 (including 6 service aces) -1; Lopez +12 -1
Olha +8 -1; Inza +2 -0 (29-12 + 1-0 = 30-12)

Balls in play on video: 173

Note that almost all of Christophe's aces came on what might easily be called errors, mostly by Inza. I score any serve that isn't returned as a service ace.

C-L scored the 1st 8 points and the last 7 as they routed O-I. This was the most one sided Star Match so far. The video coverage was completely different from all that came before it. It was a higher quality video than we have seen before. It lacked sound (on my device anyway). Also, some of the camera angles were quite high. But it did show the enormity of the FM court. It takes a little while to get acclimated to the camera angles used, and camera switches came a little too late sometimes. But these are small glitches that can be easily worked out. One of the great improvements was a visible scoreboard superimposed on the screen. Thanks to FM and the broadcasters for the improvement. As for the match, Christophe was excellent, providing the early initiative. For a wily old veteran, he gets around the court quite nicely and is not afraid to execute the falling rebote. Lopez scored one point on an incredibly long throw and polished off the victory with 3 consecutive winners. His catching was impeccable, as usual. It was a night to forget for the losers. Most of Olha's points came off dejada returns of Christophe serves which didn't clear the front.

Highlights: Note: times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

1. 8-2--9-2:  16 balls in play. The longest and best point of the match. Finished by a nice Lopez winner (30:12--29:00)

2. 11-2--12-2: 7 bip. Christophe falling rebote (27:09--26:35)

3. 16-4--16-5: 11 bip. Nice point all around. Inza finishes it well (21:09--20:11).

4. 20-10--21-10: 4 bip. Lopez wins the point with a very long throw (11:05--10:21)

5. 27-12--30-12: Lopez finishes the match with 3 nice winners. (3:29--1:19).

Olharan-Etxeto (substituting for Irastorza) (red)  defeated Egiguren-Ekhi (substituting for Etxeto) (blue) 30-25

Scoring (my judgments--yours may be different--scoring = 26-23 + 4-2=30-25)

Olharan +14 (including 2 service aces) -2 (including 1 service fault), Etxeto +3 -2
Egiguren +11 -5 (including 1 service fault), Ekhi +8 -4

Balls in play on the video: 375

In a very competitive match O-E were able to defend their lead against many challenges by E-E and, with the help of a 4-0 run early and a 5-0 run that answered a final 3-0 E-E rally, win the match. The match featured excellent play by both back court players, with very sure catching. Also many of the usual great plays we've come to expect from Egiguren and Olharan. Highlights of the match were the 7 points that consumed 15 balls or more.

Note: times run backwards. Locate them on the right side of the slider bar.

1. 6-5 O-E--7-5 25 balls--1:02:20--1:00:29
2. 9-6--10-6 19 balls--56:31--55:07
3. 10-6--11-6 17 balls--54:37--53:21
4. 15-9--15-10 16 balls--42:36--41:26
5. 22-18--22-19 28 balls--22:19-20:18 (this was the longest point of the match)
6. 23-20--23-21 19 balls--15:43--14-21
7. 24-22--25-22 23 balls--10:45--9:03

The point of the match, for me, was a great 2 wall winner by Ekhi. He threw it from just in front of the 11 line (14-8--14-9 10 balls--45:48--45:03).

Ohla-Irastorza defeated Egiguren-Inza 30-26.

Full match video

Condensed line score (winner always listed 1st)

0-1; 1-1; 1-3; 4-3; 4-5; 5-5; 5-6; 8-6; 8-7; 9-7; 9-8; 10-8; 10-10; 13-10; 13-12; 16-12; 16-15; 19-15; 19-16; 20-16; 20-18. 22-18; 22-21; 23-21; 23-25; 29-25; 29-26; 30-26.

Scoring: Note. The scoring I have doesn't add up to the total. I suspect that is because I didn't realize both Inza's and Irastorza's names started with "I" and so was assigning + and - to "I" for about half  the match before I realized the mistake. I went back and tried to figure out who was who without viewing the match again. It didn't quite work out. My figures work out to 29-27 instead of 30-26, but I will post them anyway, so that you can have a sense of who did the scoring. I will attempt to correct this at some point. All scoring is my subjective judgment. Yours may be (and probably will be) different. Let this be a point of departure.

Ohla +9 (including 2 service aces) -1; Irastorza +9 -2
Egiguren +18 (including 3 service aces) -3; Inza +6 -8

Balls in play: 353 (including one 9 ball point that was replayed because of an interference call) by my count. Time of match: about 1 hour and 7 minutes.

Two Interesting points (times listed on the video run backwards, on the right side of the slider bar, starting at 1:07:22 going back to 0:00).

Point beginning 1-0 E-In and ending 1-1: 1:06:33--1:05:39. Inza rushes in for a catch and slips on the floor, then crashes into Egiguren and they both go down in a heap. Olha scores the point. Both players are uninjured and continue.

Point beginning at 14-12 and ending at 15-12; 39:40--38:33. One of the best points of the match, 15 balls in play (second longest point). Irastorza makes a one handed underhand catch from the 11 line while near the wall, Egiguren a beautiful falling rebote, and Inza 3 very nice plays. Olha finishes the point with a dejada.

The match video was vastly improved over previous videos. The players were still at a distance but they could be clearly seen, as could the pelota. Many thanks to FM for the improvement. An excellent match came down to a 7-1 run by E-In that put them in the lead at 25-23 (their first lead since 6-5). But O-Ir answered with a 7-1 run of their own to seal the win. (about 24:06--0:00).

Laduche (substituting for Christophe)-Lopez defeated Olharan (substituting for Tambourindeguy)-Etxeto 30-23

Match article (esto.com.mx)

Tonight's match video had so many technical difficulties that there were only about 27 minutes of fractured video to watch. Many points were missed. The last score I heard called was 29-23 L-L. After yet another break in the video, the players were saluting the crowd (a pretty good size Saturday night crowd) and walking off. Here are the scores that I heard called (winners always listed 1st).

Olharan-Lopez defeated Egiguren-Irastorza 30-27

Match video Note: Due to technical difficulties, the final 14 minutes 13 seconds of the match are unwatchable. I was able to make out enough to be able to put together a linescore, but little else.

Full match linescore (winners always listed 1st).

Bolded points:

12-9--13-9 (35:37-34:35 on the video--time runs backward and is on the right side of the slider bar starting at 54:38). Great point. 13 balls in play. Irastorza makes a leaping catch to keep point alive and then Lopez wins the point with a falling rebote.

15-13--16-13: Egiguren is hit by a Lopez rebote as he attempts to return it. He slipped. There is a slippery spot on the court between the 4 and 7 line. Several players have slipped (Olharan also slipped on it a couple of times in this match). This was the first time I have seen someone injured because of it. Egiguren continued. Another player might not be so fortunate.

17-13--18-13: (23:18--22:45). Great point. Egiguren: great save off the apron. Lopez: almost impossible rebote save. Egiguren makes simple error to end the point.

18-15--18-16: Olharan slips on the court.

21-21--21-22: E-I's only lead in the match.

This was a rematch of the opening match of the season two weeks ago (won by E-I 30-22). It was an exciting, well played match. As the linescore indicates, the match was highly competitive from start to finish. It would have been great to be able to see the entire match. When players of this caliber perform, it is a joy to watch.

At 12-10 it was still anybody's game, but an 18-6 run by C-I sealed an easy victory. The star of the match by far was the old veteran Christophe. By my count he was +16 -1. Inza covers the court very well but was inconsistent tonight. Laduche is fearless and literally throws himself all over the court, He hit the floor hard several times and took a long time to get up after missing a falling rebote. He and Portet have great potential but were no match for the veteran team they were up against tonight.

Number of balls in play on match video by my count: 254

Egiguren put on an absolute front court clinic, making C-L pay time and again when Christophe couldn't get a serve past him. A 6-1 run to start the match put E-P in an advantageous position. C-L fought very hard, but after 1-1, could never reach equality. What impressed me was the quality of play. You may assign more errors than I did, as my scoring is biased toward winners rather than errors. But any way you look at it, this was a very well played match, in my opinion. Portet was particularly impressive with his catching (one expects Lopez to catch everything, and he almost did). It was a wonderful exhibition of Jai Alai skill and a tonic for us old folks, as Portet was the only one on the court under 30. :)

Tambourindeguy-Irastorza defeated Olharan-Etxeto 30-21 (?). The score might be subject to change as the match video was unclear, but the winners were certain.

Full match video (Fronton Mexico Facebook Page). This is a Facebook video and again there were issues with clarity.

As for the match, the 1st half was an equal struggle. At 14-14, Olharan faulted. T-I outscored them 15-7 after that point. Irastorza was rock solid as usual. Etxeto played an excellent match in the back court. Olharan made some impossible plays, as he always does, but was a bit inconsistent. Tambourindeguy had an excellent match. What separates this quality of players from others, in my opinion, is that even when the match loses its competitive edge, there are still great things to see in the individual points. Many thanks to FM for putting a roster of this quality together.

Egiguren-Irastorza defeated Laduche-Lopez 30-24

Match article (esto.com.mx) (added March 20, 2017)

Full match video (Fronton Mexico Facebook Page) Note that this is a Facebook video, It is not a commercial video and there are some issues with the clarity of the picture. It is a full match video and is very enjoyable to watch because the players in it were, for the most part, magnificent.

Match linescore (winners always listed first). Score is listed, followed by number of balls in play, followed, selectively, by the player ( E=Egiguren; I=Irastorza; La=Laduche; Lo=Lopez) who made an excellent play to finish the point in all cases but one. To the best of my ability.

0-1(12)(La!); 0-2(11)(La!); 1-2(2); 2-2(7); 3-2(3)(E!); 3-3(2); 4-3(8); 4-4(12)(Lo!); 4-5(3); 5-5(2); 6-5(5)(I!); 7-5(3)(I!); 8-5(5)(E!); 9-5(9); 10-5(1)(E!); 11-5(7)(E!); 11-6(2); 11-7(5)(Lo!); 12-7(6); 12-8(4)(Lo!); 13-8(6); 14-8(7); 14-9(6); 15-9(2)(E!); 15-10(4)(Lo!-2 wall); 15-11(1); 16-11(2); 16-12(8)(Lo!); 17-12(0); 17-13(2); 18-13(4)(I!); 18-14(8)(Lo!); 18-15(5)(La!); 18-16(1); 19-16(2); 19-17(6)(La!); 20-17(10)(I!); 21-17(7); 22-17(5)(I!); 22-17(7)(Interference); 23-17(3); 23-18(4)(La!); 23-19(17)(Lo!, La!) 24-19(8)(I!); 24-20(4); 25-20(8) (I!-2 wall); 26-20(3); 26-21(4)(Lo!); 26-22(3); 27-22(4)(E!); 28-22(3); 28-23(4); 29-23(2)(I!-2 wall); 29-24(6); 30-24(2)(E!)

Total balls in play, according to my count, and including the interference: 277. Time of the match: about 57 minutes.

A master class was put on by the 2 legendary back men as E-I used a 7-0 run early in the match to take the initiative, which they never gave up. All 4 players played well, although Laduche made some youthful errors and a few poor serves that helped E-I keep their momentum. The highlights of the match, for me, anyway, were the two points bolded above (from about 12 minutes 58 seconds--10:20 remaining on the video). In the first point, the 7th ball of the point, Lopez made an amazing behind the back rebote and 10 balls later Laduche put the point away. Irastorza featured in the 2nd point. Lopez' mobility and Irastorza's effortless power featured throughout. It is well known but bears repeating. They are both fantastic catchers. Laduche, though young and raw, has lots of potential. And Egiguren is simply ageless, and always a joy to watch.
