Main Nue--Tounois du Jambone--1st Esku Pilota tournament of 2019

The Tournois du Jambone, at Trinquet Moderne, Bayonne (1) (2), was played on April 18 and 20, 2019.  (Source for all TdJ scores: Esku Pilota Resultats)

The most interesting thing about this tournament was that it was the "coming out" party for Maxime Etcheverry and Bixente Garat, talented young players who played as substitutes in the FFPB Elite Pro par Equipes Competition (more on them, including match videos for both, can be seen in the Round 4 Qualification post). Alas, in the end the experience of Aguirre and Benesse won out over the last half of the Final, with a 19-12 run at the end being decisive. But the two youngsters showed what they could do, using a 20-10 run to pave the way for them to advance to the final.

Main Nue--FFPB Championnat de France Par Equipes (Pairs)--Info About Competition--List of Winners Back to 2007--Semi-Finals

The 2019 FFPB (Federation Francaise de Pelote Basque) Championnat de France par Equipes (pairs) Tournament began on March 10, 2019 and will end with a final on May 5. There will be two competitions, Group A and Group B. 20 players are  involved. FFPB has provided a "dossier" (.pdf format, 9p.) explaining how the tournament works and who the players in each group are.
The competition begins with a round robin League in both groups. The fifth place finishers in each group are eliminated. Then the 1st place finisher in Group B plays against the 4th place finisher in Group A. The winner plays in the Group A Semi-finals as the #4 team. The loser plays in the Group B Semi-finals as the #2 team (if the A team is demoted). This is a twist that makes the competition very interesting. A Group B team has a chance to be promoted within the space of one competition. The semi-finals will be #1-#4 and #2-#3 in each group. The winners meet in Finals on April 28 (Group A) and May 5 (Group B).

L-B had little problem with M-H, using a 20-4 run in the second half of the match to move on to the finals.

Larralde-Bilbao advance to Final v Ospital-Ducassou

With the score 32-18 I-A, this was looking like anything but a competitive match. But then O-I put on a tremendous 15-2 run to get to within 1. Alas, they ran out of steam and fell in the end, but not before one of the best rallies in a long time.

Inchauspe-Amulet advance to Final v Bielle-Cubiat

Partial scoring:

Waltary 8 service aces, Ospital 7

Time of the match: 1 hour 26 minutes

The defending champions bowed out, but not without a struggle, fighting back from 6, 9 , and 13 point deficits as the match progressed, showing remarkable fighting ability, but never got "over the hump,"as O-D scored 3 of the last 4 points to finish what must have been an extremely frustrating match for W-G. The match article praised Guichandut's "extraordinary defense."

Ospital-Ducassou advance to the Final

Group B

Elgart-Palomes (#3 2-2 +14) 21 (Pilota Ttiki Youtube condensed full match video)

Selected linescore (FFPB) (winners always listed first)

7-0; 13-12; 28-12; 40-21

Partial scoring:

Bielle 12 service aces, Elgart 5

Time of the match: 1 hour

A 15 point run by B-C at mid-match took all of the drama out of this match. The match article discussed how important Cubiat's contribution was. Bielle's 12 service aces were the most of any front court player this weekend.

Bielle-Cubiat advance to the Final

The company awards diamonds (*) (1 to 3) to the championships depending on their importance, duration, etc. Note: *** ranked tournaments are the major annual tournaments, to the best of my knowledge. These would by the Liga Kutxabank (pairs), the Mundial Individual (singles), the Mundo Parejas (pairs) and the Bizkaia Open (pairs). The rankings of the summer tournaments are unknown to me at this time.

The diamonds of each tournament are multiplied by the following points ladder:

1º: 22 | 2nd: 18 | 3rd: 14 | 4th: 12 | 5th onwards: 10

In the individual world the points are awarded depending on the elimination in which each paddler has fallen

The pelotaris that do not compete in a tournament acquire as many points as the last of the competition.

For 2019, a table of actual wins and losses along with jokos won and lost for players by position is also available, as another way to look at how the Palistas are doing throughout the year. It includes all of the matches that I find, whether tournament or independent matches. This, along with some data for about 1/2 of the 2016-17 season is available at the InnPala Player win-loss table page on the right side of the blog. Records are kept cumulatively, match by match.

Pala/Pala Larga--Mundo Parejas--Final and Third Place Match--April 13, 2019

Mundial Parejas, the premier long court Pala Tournament, began February 22-23, 2019. It ended with a Final and Third Place match on April 13. The tournament, sponsored by Munduko Pilota Batzarra (Basque Pelota and Associated Sports World Council), was set up in a unique way. In each round the partnerships changed. It featured 8 InnPala professionals, 4 front court (delanteros) and 4 back (zagueros). The tournament was a partial double round robin, with each player pairing with 3 others in each round, for a total of 6 matches. The partners who did not play together in the League phase are listed at the bottom of this post.  The scoring for the tournament was based completely on joko (set) scores: 3-0=100pts, 3-1=80pts, 3-2=60pts, 2-3=40pts, 1-3=20pts, 0-3=0pts. The scoring system emphasized the importance of every joko, no matter what the situation in any match.

All matches were played at Mungia, (1)(2) the "Cathedral" of long court Pala (Pala Larga (1)(2)).

Complete tournament information (.pdf format, 12p), including match schedule and partnerships, rules of the tournament, and a listing of past winners going back to 2007. (Source: Munduko Pilota Batzarra).

The players:

Zagueros (Back): Iker Gordon; Xabier Ibargarai; Ibai Perez; Inaki Urrutia

Note: Garate won a 2 match play-in v Ander Landeta for the 4th front court position.

Scoring (Deia): Note: it is unclear whether aces are included in the total winners or not. Same for faults and errors. I was unable to come up with any combination that added to the final score, but this was the only scoring I was able to find. It is  presented exactly as Deia gave it.

Gaubeka +10 -3 Ibai Perez 1 service ace, 4 service faults +4 -8
Fusto +9 -12 Ibargarai 1 service fault +1 -10

Match article (Deia)
Match article (Naiz)

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any video of these matches. I do not know if they were televised or not, but if they weren't it is unfortunate. In any event, all of the match articles stressed the same thing. G-IP knew they couldn't go toe to toe with the power of F-Ib, so they played stout defense, defense, and more defense. Eventually, the lack of production from the two power hitters frustrated them and they made mistakes. A lot of mistakes. Ibai Perez was not as precise as he usually is, but still had less faults than his counterpart, and had enough winners to partially counteract his errors. Gaubeka had a 10 point net advantage over Fusto in a match where G-IP had 13 more total points. Look to the joko (set) scores to see how effective the strategy was, from beginning to end. G-IP at least doubled the score in each of their joko wins.

And so, Fusto was denied his fifth consecutive Mundo Parejas title. Gaubeka got his 3rd since 2007, equaling the recently retired Imanol Ibanez (zaguero-back). He also broke a four Mundo Parejas Final losing streak to Fusto. Ibai Perez won his second championship in the last 3 years. He also finished this competition with 7 consecutive wins. Ibargarai did not have the greatest day at the office, but he has now participated in the last two major Finals, splitting them.

3rd place match:

Source: Diario Vasco Cartelera (Note: Diario Vasco made an error on the 2nd joko (Source: EITB)) (Update May 16, 2019

I have been unable to find any more information about this match. But judging from the line scores (N-U had to come back for two minimum joko wins and won all three of their jokos by the minimum), it must have been an exciting one to watch.
