Zubiri-Brefel..............3-2....(2-3, 3-1, 3-0, 2-3, 3-0).....13
Necol-Ibargari:............2-2....(3-1, 2-3, 2-3, 3-2)............10
Fusto-Gordon..............2-3....(1-3, 0-3, 3-2, 3-0, 1-3)......8
Landeta-Imanol...........0-5....(1-3, 1-3, 2-3, 0-3, 0-3)......4

December 3:

Landeta-Imanol defeated Necol-Ibargari 3-1 (10-7, 10-9, 6-10, 10-6)

Fusto-Gordon defeated Zubiri-Brefel 3-0 (10-7, 10-9 ,10-9)

League Table:

Key: Team, Match record, Joko (set) record, League points

Gaubeka--Ibai-Perez.. 5-0....(3-2, 3-1, 3-2, 3-2, 3-1)..........15

Note: N-I are listed above F-G because that is how they are listed at InnPala. Match records are meaningless in the actual tournament scoring mechanics. Jokos (sets) only are counted. Since N-I have the same number of points in fewer matches, they are ahead even though their match record is worse. This, of course, will sort itself out when all teams have played the same number of matches.

The biggest surprise package of the tournament was delivered on December 3. Landeta-Imanol scored a huge upset over Necol-Ibargari for their first win of the tournament. Fusto-Gordon's upset of Zubiri-Brefel was perhaps not as surprising, but the way they did it, in shutout fashion, was. And what a match that must have been, only 5 points separating the two teams after 3 jokos. At the end of this session the last semi-final spot was wide open (compared to how it looked just one day before). Even L-I have an outside chance if they can sweep their last two matches and have other matches fall their way. Unfortunately, one of L-I's matches will be against the leaders of the competition and L-I cannot really afford to lose one joko the rest of the way. Z-B, N-I, and F-G all have solid semi-final chances. And with some help, first place and an automatic trip to the finals is within their reach. There are a lot of "long shots" going into the end of the league phase. And the events of December 3 made most of them possible.

====================

Matches that are single partidos will be noted. Table will be according to match winning percentage. 1st tie breaker will be number of wins. 2nd tie breaker will be joko win-loss differential.

1. Trailing 12-8, Gonzalez put together a 17-3 run and cruised home from there. Almost 2/3 of his points came from service aces. Both players were very accurate with direct point shots (xareat and pumpa xare), Gonzalez with 7, Olcomendy with 9. Gonzalez moves on to play Guichandut on December 5, 2016.

2. Monce-Ondars totally dominated Etchegaray at the beginning, winning 20 of the first 22 points. In the middle of the match, Etchegaray attempted to come back. Then Monce-Ondars shut him out completely in the 5th decade of the match to seal the outcome. 10 Etchegaray errors hurt his cause. Monce-Ondars moves on to play Ospital on December 5, 2016.

It was a match in three distinct parts, with each team having control for a long period of time. A 13-0 run by W-B seemed to put them in command. Shortly thereafter, Waltary suffered an adductor injury. After receiving treatment, he came back but his movement was hindered and B-D took advantage to close out the match with a 15-2 run of their own. The match video is wonderful to watch in that it is shot with two cameras, both at low level, from behind and in front of the players.

According to Amulet (as explained in the Pilota Ttiki article) the players asked for the format to be changed after the semi-final matches. Amulet's thinking on this is illuminating. Also, according to the PT article, the final was closer than the score indicated, with many long points that were fiercely contested.
