Remonte--Sagardoaren Txapelketa (Tourneo Sidra) Round 3 Week 2-April 4, 6 2019

The Sagardoaren Txapelketa/El Torneo de la Sidra/Cider Tournament began February 28, 2019 and will end with a final on May 4, 2019.

The Sagardoaren Txapelketa IX features 8 Oriamendi2010 roster pairs (7 players from the A Group and 9 from the B Group). The tournament will be contested in two 4 team groups (A and B). Each team corresponds to a cider house sponsor. Letters following the players' names correspond to their Oriamendi2010 groups.

Group A

Bereziartua (Uterga-Labaka) (A-B)
GaztaƱaga (Urriza-Zaldua) (A-B)
Larre-Gain (Juanenea-Azpiroz) (B-B)
Petritegi (Segurola-Endika) (B-A)

Group B

Altzueta (Etxarri-Ion) (A-A)
Gurutzeta (Ezkurra II-Garces) (B-B)
Oialume Zar (Goikoetxea V-Barrenetxea IV) (B-A)
Setien (Ansa II-Agirrezabala) (B-A)

Of these pairs, only Segurola-Endika have ever won the Tournament. There are five players who did not play (except as substitutes) last year. They are Ansa II, Etxarri, and Goikoetxea V in the front; Labaka and Zaldua in the back.

The tournament will consist of a League phase, a single round robin in each group. There will be a change in how the Semi-finals are contested this year. The first and second place teams in each group will advance to a Semi-final League, a single round robin. At the end of the Semi-final League the top two teams will play in the Final on May 4. This format makes the League play more important. Under the old format, all teams advanced, but were seeded so that the teams that finished lower had to play more matches to get to the Final.

Scoring for the League phase will be as follows.

Match winner (40 point matches): 4pts.
36-39: 2pts.
31-35: 1pt
26-30: 0pts.
0-25: -1pt

Round 3--Week 2--END OF LEAGUE PHASE

April 6, 2019

Group B

Etxarri-Ion (A-A) (Altzueta) (2-1 +8) 40
Ansa II-Agirrezabala (B-A) (1-2 +8) 37

Selected linescore (winners always listed first):

0-4; 5-1016-16; 22-22; 24-28; 29-29; 31-29; 36-32-; 38-36; 40-37

Scoring:

Etxarri +15 Ion +13 (both -12)(?)*
Ansa II +24 Agirrezabala +1(?) (both -12) (?)*

*Inferred from the other scores, if they are correct

The final match continued the trend of close, exciting matches in this Group. It was decided by 3 points in a thrilling finish. Here is the background. There were various possibilities going into this match for two way or three way ties for the second position in the Semi-Final league. The permutations are explained fully in the match preview and match articles above. The gist of the situation was that Setien needed to win this match by more than 4 points in order to guarantee their promotion. Anything less would set off promotion scenarios that would involve total point differentials. In that case, Oaliume Zar (Goikoetxea V-Barrenetxea IV) would "get the nod". In fact that is what happened. Setien were beaten in spite of a great effort by their dalantero (forward) Ansa II (+24). They got off to a 4 and then 5 point lead before E-I caught fire with an 11-6 run that equalized the match. It stayed equal until the last quarter. At 29-29, they spurted to 4 point lead on the back of a 7-3 run. They then fought off a 4-2 A-A run to hold on and win 40-37. This created a 3 way tie for the second position. In a 3 way matchup, it would come down to total point differential. In that case, Oialume Zar had the best point differential based on a 40-28 win over Altzueta on March 16, the only match of the entire League schedule that was decided by more than 3 points.

Thus, Oialume Zar moves on and Altzueta goes home. Which is a little difficult to understand, because Altzueta ended up with a better match record than O Z (2-1 to 1-2). And a team with a losing record will be moving on, while a winning team doesn't. The rules are the rules, everyone knows, but it would be difficult to begrudge Etxarri and Ion, the only A-A team in the Tournament, feeling hard done by. All told, it was a wonderful, balanced, competition, and a point or two here or there could have made a huge difference for any of the teams.

Group B Table: FINAL

Teams-wins-losses +or- Tournament points. Tie breaker is head to head results.

Gurutzeta (Ezkurra II-Garces B-B) 2-1 +10
Oialume Zar (Goikoetxea V-Barrenetxea IV B-A) 1-2 +8

Setien (Ansa II-Agirrezabala B-A) 1-2 +8*

* Eliminated

Oialume Zar qualifies for the second Semi-final League position based on an overall point differntial advantage (114-108); Altzueta (118-116); Setien (115-117)

Group A

Segurola-Endika (B-A) (Petritegi) (3-0 +12) 40
Uterga-Labaka (A-B) (Bereziartua (0-3 -1) 20

Selected linescore (winners always listed first):

8-1; 17-520-1030-15; 35-18; 40-20

Partial scoring:

Segurola +20 -1; Endika +10 (including 5 service aces) -3

Segurola 8 two wall winners

Uterga-Labaka combined: +17* -10*

*inferred from the other scores

Petritegi (Segurola-Endika) put an end to all the speculation about the possibilities of what might happen in the Group if they didn't score at least 26 points. They dominated Bereziartua (Uterga-Labaka) 40-20, adding 4 points and winning the Group A League easily with 12 points. Gastanaga (Urriza-Zaldua) tied for second with Larre Gain (Juanenea-Azpiroz) with 7 points, but won the second Semi-final League spot by virtue of beating LG in the head to head matchup between the two 40-34 last week (see below). S-E took the drama out of this match early, taking an 8-1 lead. By the halfway point they had doubled the score (20-10) and kept doubling it (35-18, 40-20). They are playing like a steam roller right now, winning their 3 League matches 120-82, and outscoring teams headed by Urriza and Uterga 80-44. Seguroa had sparkling statistics in this match (+20 -1) and he was +38 -1 in the two matches we have statistics for. More ominously for the rest of the competition, in this match he added the two wall shot to his arsenal, converting on 8 of them. According to the match article, Endika dominated Labaka in the back and his defense helped to make things "comfortable" for Segurola. Uterga was never a factor. The precision that S-E are playing with (+61 -5) is almost frightening. It shows a team that is in perfect rhythm and should be a handful for any opponent. Outside of one 10-1 run by Juanenea-Azpiroz (Larre Gain) that made Petretigi's match with them very close (see below under March 21), they have not been taxed in this Tournament.

Group A Table: FINAL

Teams-wins-losses +or- Tournament points

Petritegi (Segurola-Endika B-A) (3-0 +12)
Gaztanaga (Urriza- Zaldua A-B) (2-1 +7)
Larre Gain (Juanenea-Apiroz B-B) (1-2 +7)*
Bereziartua (Uterga-Labaka A-B) (0-3 -2)*

Note: This Tournament can also be followed in its larger context of the twice weekly 4 match sessions (on Thursdays and Saturdays) at Galarreta. There, in addition to following this tournament, you can see how the participants in the ST are doing in their other weekly matches, what their monthly win-loss records are, and other information on the comings and goings of Oriamendi2010 Remonte. See the "Galarreta Star Match" recurring Page on the right side of the blog.

Also, these professional Remonte players don't play all their matches at Galarreta. They also play in an annual set of mostly short court (36-38 meters, as opposed to Galarreta's 56 meter court) tournaments sponsored by Fundacion Remonte Euskal Jai (Euskal Jai Berri). Those competitions are covered on a separate Page on the right side of the blog: Euskal Jai Berri Match results. Match scores, articles, and separate player win-loss records are available.

Note: for all results and match articles for all previous tournaments, I will link to the results. Finals match articles will be linked to directly. To match the results to the match articles for all other matches, I will link to all match articles for that year. Simply match the articles to the result dates. It is a bit cumbersome, but, I think, the easiest way to find non-Final Tournament match stories given the structure of the Oriamendi2010 databases. All match articles, unless otherwise specifically stated, are from Oriamendi2010 or the Viva El Remonte blog via Oriamendi2010. I have yet to find any tournament history in any modality covered as well and as powerfully from the standpoint of easy retrieval of information from one place, as the Oriamendi2010 website.
