There have been several very long matches (in terms of time and balls in play) in this year's BT competition. The longest match took over almost an hour and 40 minutes. Two matches have had over 900 balls in play. Last week at Zumaia, Bengoetxea VI and Mariezkurrena II complained that the pelotas were substandard. INJURY REPORT

 October 2019

Bixintxo Bilbao: Bilbao suffered a hand injury in October (I haven't found the exact date). The injury is described as a "crushed metacarpal nerve" (Pilota Ttiki). He did not play in the Tornoi Eskaleri Pro Pilota singles tournament in November. At this time it is unknown when he will return (added November 8, 2019). Bilbao returned to action in the annual Esku Pilota Laguanak (Friends of Esku Pilota) match (November 30) with Waltary, defeating Bielle-Ducassou.

 Peio Larralde: Larralde injured his hand ("mal de main") during the Mendione Tournament. He returned for the Trinquet Berria (Hasparren) Jeudi match on October 6. Addendum: Larralde will not play in the Tournoi Eskaleri Pro Pilota Singles tournament in November due to wisdom tooth surgery.

26eme Super Prestige (Esku Pilota Pro Tour). This is the premier Esku Pilota Singles championship. It is played on Mondays at Le Garat, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Donibane Garazi (1) (2). The Championship begins November 18 and ends with a final on December 29. There are two "poules" groups): A and B. There is "pre barrage" (league) play in from November 18-25, involving 3 players in each group. The winners of the two play-in's join two other players seeded into the two groups, a three player round robin. The top two finishers in the round robin advance to the Semi-finals: Group A1 v Group B2, and B1 v A2. The winners play in the final.

Ducassou annihilated Monce in a match that showed his domination of every phase of the modality. He consistently beat Monce on the serve, both left and right. He also beat him mercilessly in play, outplaying him at both ends of the floor. Monce scored the first 2 points and then 5 more in the match. Ducassou set the tone when he won the 3rd point, a grueling 22 ball point. After that, only 4 more points consumed more than 10 balls in play. In addition to his 18 aces, Duassou won 9 other points the 2nd time he touched the pelota. Monce's body language indicated that the match was over far before it actually was. Ducassou, earlier this year, played an exhibition match against 2 opponents. He lost that match. On this occasion, it looked like he might have won against 3.

This was a match of 2 halves, the first dominated by Etchegaray (20-9), the second by Waltary (31-14). Etchegaray began the match by winning 9 of the 1st 10 points with 5 aces. Half of his aces came in the first 2 decades. He consistently beat Waltary with high arcing serves to the left side, some of which bounced twice with authority on the back dugout roof. He built a 9-21 lead before Waltary struck back with 11 consecutive winners, including 4 aces and 2 direct points (a Xare and a Pumpa Xare). Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Etchegaray won the next point with a great Pumpa Xare, but followed that with an error. It was a key point, as it gave momentum back to Waltary. The match was tied at 22 and 24 before Waltary took his first lead at 25-24. At the end of the decade it was tied again at 25. Waltary took over the match at that point, winning the next decade 7-3 (32-28) with 4 aces. He opened up a 35-28 lead before Etchegaray answered with 2 winners. At 35-30, a crucial 20 ball point, the longest and best of the match, was won by Waltary with a well placed left pass. But that didn't deflate Etechegaray, who responded with 3 consecutive winners, that last of which was his last ace of the match, to cut the lead to 36-33. On the next point, he hit a sure and close in dejada (drop shot) winner into the chapa. Waltary pounced on the opportunity and won 3 of the last 4 points to advance to the Semi-finals. This match was dominated by power. 54 of the 74 points consumed less than 5 balls in play. Compare this match to the Ducassou-Monce match. 74 points with 262 balls in play (3.54/point) against 47 points with 202 (4.3).

In the 2nd half of the match Waltary worked his low smash serve both left and right against an increasingly frustrated opponent. At 40, he still has the most lethal serve in the modality, in my opinion.

This match was closer than the final score indicated, with an O-L 10-4 run equalizing going into the 3rd decade. B-D answed with their own 10-4 run to establish a lead in the middle of the 4th decade and built that lead to 6 points by the end of the 5th decade, holding off strong resistance (accorrding to the match article)from O-L. But the winners put the match and Txapela out of reach with a perfect 10-0 6th decade. Bielle noted that the Trinquet was large and slow and the points were hard to come by

Jokin Altuna (Altuna III): Altuna III missed his Jornada 8 match with L. Galarza v Ezurdia-Martija due to a sore wrist. He is expected to return for his Jornada 9 match against Jaka-Zabaleta. (Diario Vasco)

Unai Laso: Laso a delantero (front) injured his arm in a match at Gautegiz-Arteaga. He had to retire early in the match. Early indications are that it is not a serious injury, but his return date is unknown at this time. Laso returned to action with a bang, defeating Pairs champion Danel Elezkano 22-17 on October 7 in the play in round of the 4 1/2 Competition.

Mikel Urrutikoetxea: Urrutikoetxea suffered a torn pectoral muscle in his Asta Nagusia Bilbao Semi-final win on August 21. He is expected to be out of action 3 to 6 week. He will be replaced in the AN Final by Unai Laso. (baikopilota.eus)

Andoni Aretxabaleta: Aretxabaleta suffered a finger injury in his Torneo Bizkaia Final Pairs match on August 20. The extent of the injury and how long he may be sidelined is unknown at this time. Aretxabaleta returned as a substitute for Mariezkurrena II with Bengoetxea VI for the first two matches of the Binakako Txapelketa/Campeonato Parejas Liga competition. He then returned as as substitute for Urrutikoetxea with Oliazola II in the 4th round of that competition.

This is the premier professional Mano pairs Champion competition. There are 8 teams. It starts with a double round robin league. The format then changes from previous years. The top two teams go to a Semi-final League. There is a playoff" #3 v #6 and #4 v #5 to determine the other two teams in the Semi-final League (6 post league teams rather than 4). The SF League is a round robin. The top two SF League finishers play in a Final on April 5, 2020. There is no 3rd place match this year.

Bengoetxea VI was dropped from the team due to "sporting motives". He was replaced by Victor. It is unknown whether or not Bengoetxea VI will be called back. Victor had an excellent match (+11 -2) but it wasn't enough to overcome Mariezkurrena II's +1 -7. In addition to the errors, A-I were credited with winners on shots M couldn't retrieve with his left hand against the wall. M is still recovering from an injury (see Deia account below), but the lack of ability with the left hand is not going to make things easier for Victor, Bengoetxea VI, or any other partner, for that matter). In his last 4 matches, M is +5 -27.

A 6 point run gave A-I a 4 point lead, which they were able to defend, and finally expand. It was their 6th win in 10 matches. B(V)-M have now lost 8 in a row and 9 of 10 for the competition.

This was the first BT match this season played in Ipparalde (North Basque).

Z-R and E-E split their 2 League matches, E-E winning the first 22-11 (Dario substituting for Zabala), Z-R winning the 2nd 22-13. In fact, Dario had a lot to do with Z-R making the Semi-Final league. Z-R barely beat out Salaberria-Garmendi. Both teams had great 2nd halves, Z-R going 6-1 while S-G were 5-2. The key match was played Week 8, when Dario (substituting for Zabala--more on Dario below)-Ruiz defeated Salaberria-Garmendia 22-18. This allowed them to make up the one game deficit they had (both were 3-6 after this match). They both matched each other week for week, with each suffering only 1 loss the rest of the League schedule. Both ended 7-7. They split two matches during the League (Salaberria-Garmendia winning 22-19 in their 1st match). The 1st tie-breaker was the head to head match record. 1-1. The 2nd tie-breaker was head to head point differential. Z-R won their playoff spot by a single point.

It is ironic that Z-R was actually Dario-Ruiz for 5 of the team's 14 matches. D-R was 4-1 in those 5 matches, including the crucial victory over S-G. Z-R were actually 3-6 playing together. Interestingly, Dario also substituted for Salaberria once. He and Garmendia lost that match to Agirre-Azpiroz (winners of the League) 22-10. So in effect, Dario not only helped Z-R to gain the semi-final place, he also was involved in one of the losses that knocked out S-G. Dario finished the League 4-2 as a substitute and was left to ponder how he might have done in the Semi-finals.

As for the match, 6-0 and 8-1 runs by the winners that served as bookends around a 5-0 run by E-E and made the difference. Zabala dominated the match with a +6 point differential, the only player with more winners than errors. Ruiz, who struggled mightily during the first half of the League, showed great improvement in the 2nd half. In this match he played steady defense and made 2 brilliant diving saves in the front.


Z-R's task becomes more difficult next week when they face the winner of Agirre-Ezkiroz v Pena II-Aranguren (both 11-3 in the League). They were 1-3 v A-E/P-A during the League, but the win was over Arretxe (substituting because Pena II was called up to the 1A competition as a substitute)-Arenguren, 22-14. One of their losses to Agirre-Ezkiroz was by a 22-20 score. If you are looking for a "dark horse" in this competition, Z-R may be that team. As for E-E, their next match, against an equally desperate loser of the match between the 2 front runners, will be "win or go home" for both teams.

November 2019

Xabier Ibargarai: Ibargaria has suffered an injury that has kept him out of his team's (Ibarguren-Ibargarai) 1st two Liga Kutxabank matches. He is scheduled to return on November 16 for a League match v Gaubeka-Garate. I have been unable to discover the nature of the injury. Ibargarai returned to action on November 16

It is a 6 match (mostly) double round robin, but each team will not face one other team. At the end, the Delantero (front) and Zaguero (back) with the most points will face the #2 D and Z in the FINAL.

INJURY REPORT

Xabier Azpiroz (Group B Zaguero--back): Azpiroz suffered an ankle injury in his Campeonato Parejas Liga match on November 28. He was replaced by Igor Agirrezabala (Group A) to partner with Xanti Uterga for their November 30 Liga match. As of now, it is unkown how long Azpiroz will be out of action. Azpiroz returned for his Orona Campeonato Parejas League match on December 5, a 40-38 win with Uterga over Urriza-Larranaga. (Added December 5, 2019).
December 12

Xanti Uterga (Group A Delantero--front): Uterga suffered a groin injury in a match on December 6. He is expected to be out about 1 month. Prior to the injury he was expected to drop out of the Campeonato Parajas after the League Phase due to a disagreement over the format of the Tournament (Diario Vasco). Uterga returned to action February 1, 2020.

The 10th Sagardoaren Txapelketa begins on March 5 and ends with a Final on May 9. It is one of the longest and most grueling tournaments on the calendar. For the most part it combines Oriamendi2010 Group A and B players. There are 8 teams this year, 4 in Group A and 4 in Group B (Sagardoeren Groups). They each represent one of the Cider Houses in the area. The Tournament consists of a single round robin league. The top 2 finishers in each group will then advance to a 4 team Semi-Final League, a single round robin. The top 2 finishers of that advance to the Final. All matches are 40 point partidos. Most, if not all Sagardoaren matches will be "Star Matches" (see below).

Match article

The final "Star Match" before suspension of all play at Galarreta due to the corona virus was an exciting and well played match that went to the final point. When 3 time champion Endika was replaced by Aizpuru III, it seemed that E-Z would have a big advantage. It wasn't easy, but with "red hot" Ezkurra II putting up a +13 net (+18 -5) and Zubiri racking up 8 service aces among his +14, as well  as playing superb defense with only 1 in play error,  Larre Gain was able to pull out a match they had under control, lost control of, and then produced a big run at the end to win. Ezkurra II, who returned from injury in late January and had an awful 1-7 start, won his 5th match in succession. A 9-1 run late in the 1st half of the match gave E-Z an 8 point lead. But G-A chipped away at it, equalizing at 27 with a 12-4 run (for a total of 22-7). A 10-3 run gave G-A a commanding 37-30 lead and visions of restricting E-Z to 1 or even 0 team points. E-Z were having none of that, and answered with a decisive 8-0 run to take a 38-37 lead. The teams split the last 4 points, which yielded equal scores at 38 and 39 before E-Z finally won. Aizpuru III, on short notice, had a monster offensive match, with +17 (including 7 service aces).

Setien (A-L got off the mark with a big win, keeping Altzeta (J-G) off the team scoreboard. It didn't start out that easily. The match article said it was an even match up to 20, with both fronts playing aggressive Remonte ("Dieron velocidad a la pelota con su poderoso golpe"). But A-L then took over the match, finishing by outscoring their opponents 19-12. The difference was mainly in the back where Larranaga (net +10) clearly outplayed Garces (+1), accounting for 9 of the 11 points that were the margin of victory.

Torneo de Pelota de El Antiguo

One of the oldest and most esteemed amateur tournaments in the South (Donostia (San Sebastian)), El Antiguo began its 71st edition on July 2, 2019. It is a two tiered tournament (Youth and Senior) with a League phase followed by a Semi-final round robin, leading to the Final on August 31. There are men's and women's tournaments. The "ancient" tournament has turned to the most modern technology, offering live and on demand streaming of matches.

Tournament Website (which has links to the players and the complete calendar, as well as a 35 page (.pdf) promotional magazine. Matches are played Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:00 local time. Results are listed with match articles at the site.
