In a rematch of the FFPB (Federation Francaise de Pelote Basque) Elite Pro Championnat de France par Equipes (pairs), L-B won again, this time defeating the defending champions of this Tournament. They were in control of the match from start to finish, but never ahead (for most of the match) enough to call this an easy victory. The match articles noted that Ducassou had an unusually poor day at the office (indeed, Ducassou himself agreed--P.T.):

Je suis déçu de ma prestation parce que malgré tout on n’est pas loin et moi je n’ai jamais été à la hauteur dans cette partie

(Loose translation):

I am disappointed with my performance because despite everything we were in the match... I was never at my best in this match.

The key point was the 26-25--27-25 (video--does not stop after the end of the point) point, a 58 ball struggle that was saved magnificently by Larralde on the 28th ball, and then again by Bilbao on the 54th. Larralde finally won it. The point seemed to finally turn the match away from O-D, as L-B won 13 of the final 21 points. It was a relatively dominant win, but one that was in doubt for a long time.

Larralde had now won this tournament 4 times. It was Bilbao's first win. And for L-B, it was the completion of two "triples". This team has now won the FFPB (Federation Francaise de Pelote Basque) Championnat de France par Equipes 3 times:

In addition, they have now won the last 3 major finals they have played, this one, CdF 2019 and

Quite an accomplishment for two of the best.

And not too bad for Ospital-Ducassou either. Two consecutive Masters de Bayonne Finals is quite an accomplishment.

INJURY REPORT:

July 28, 2019

Mikel EgigurenFor Egiguren the stress of having played 2 matches in 3 days (July 25 in the Cesta Punta World Tour Master 2 Final, and July 27 in the Jai Alai World Tour Gernika Grand Slam Liguilla match), along with the prospect of playing in the 1st Semi-Final of the CPWT Master 3 Tournament on July 30, led to his dropping out of the Leikeitio Masters Semi-final on July 28.

July 27, 2019

Txabi Inza: After playing twice in 3 days (July 23 and 25 in the Semi-final and Final of the CPWT Master 2 Tournament), Inza was unable to play in the 3rd Round Liguilla match of the Gernika Grand Slam. He was replaced by (Aimar) Aldazabal. I have found no information about the reason for his absence or any timetable for his return.

July 26, 2019

Diego Beaskoetxea: Beaskoetxea was unable to play in his Hondarribia League match with Minvielle v Erik (Mendizabal)-Ekhi on June 26. According to the JAWT story (the same story for all matches), he decided to skip the June 26 Hondarribia Grand Slam League match in order to be more physically fit for the Gernika Grand Slam League match on July 27. He was replaced by Ludovic Laduche. Beaskoetxea did play (and win) his League 3 Gernika match on July 27.

July 20, 2019

Nicolas Etxeto: Etxeto suffered an abdominal injury ("un pinchazo en la cintura") in warm-ups for his Round 2 Liguilla match in the Gernika Grand Slam. He played through it for one set but then could go no further. How long he will be out of action is unknown at this time.

July 13, 2019

(Unai) Lekerika: Lekerika suffered a "cintura" (waist) injury in his July 13 opening Liguilla Group A match in the Gernika Grand Slam competition. He was unable to play in his Markina Masters semi-final match with Arbe v Erik (Mendizabal)-Irastorza on July 14. He was replaced by Ekhi. Lekerika returned to action, partnering with Goikoetxea on July 27 in their Gernika Grand Slam Liguilla match.

July 7, 2019

Jean Olharan: Olharan missed his Quarter final match in the Master Series Markina, still feeling the effects of the shoulder injury he played through at Fronton Mexico in the Moises Cosio Gomez Copa Premier League Final on June 30. When he will return to action is unknown at this time

Ludovic Laduche: Laduche (who suffered a severe tendon injury in the April 26, 2019 FFPB (Federation Francais de Pelote Basque) Pro-Am Final. He missed the entire Fronton Mexico season and returned as a substitute for Olharan in the Master Series Markina on July 7. For more on Laduche's injury, including full match video of the match he was injured in, check the NEWS AND INJURY ARCHIVE OF THIS BLOG. Inujuries are listed under obituaries and news items, in reverse chronological order. Modalities are mixed together.

Matches are played in sets, two to 15. Tie breaker to 5. 5 pasas (over serves) are allowed. After that an over serve is a fault. Any under serve is an immediate fault (Error corrected August 3, 2019).

July 27

A very important variable is seeping into the JAWT competition. An alarming number of players are either injured or are choosing not to play in multiple matches within a short period of time. We saw some of this happening at Fronton Mexico in June, when the burden of multiple matches in a short time span took its toll at the end. It is perhaps not unexpected. Most of these players are veterans of many campaigns, both Partido and Quiniela. Many are on the other side of 35. Hopefully the ones who are injured will come back soon. And the ones who are missing matches to preserve themselves will come back all that much stronger. One player who is getting a lot of experience at a new position is (Aimar) Aldazabal. He is a 36 year old veteran who is making the switch from front court to back. He has held his own so far, and is getting more and more chances to do so. As of this week, he has played in 7 JAWT matches.

Interestingly, the two stalwarts, still the best in the world at age 35 and 38 respectively, Lopez and Goikoetxea, the Champions of Fronton Mexico after playing a demanding schedule there, have not missed a beat in these competitions. Goikoetxea, all told, on both sides of the Pyrenees, has played 8 matches, if I am not mistaken. He played 5 in 6 days (July 22, 23, 25, 26, 27). Lopez has played 6 so far, and played on July 26, 27, and 28. They both have pretty full schedules, assuming they keep winning. On top of being the best players, that they are able to keep playing at this level is astonishing.

Both League matches were disappointing due to the lack of competitive sets. Outside of a spirited 2nd set comeback (an 8-3 run) by Egiguren, both matches were runaways, although each point, with players of this quality, is worth watching. Now comes a Semi-final schedule that would seem to be set up for a great final between Goikoetxea-Lekerika and Beaskoetxea-Lopez. But nothing is set in stone. We should be in for some excellent Jai Alai/Cesta Punta.

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Cesta Punta Pro Tour Internationaux Cesta Punta--St. Jean de Luz (Donibane Lohizune) Master 2 Tournament

The Cesta Punta Pro Tour's premier competition, St. Jean de Luz Cesta Punta, played at St.Jean de Luz (1) (2) runs from July 2-August 29, 2019. It began with a play in Tournament to determine a "wild card" avant (front) and arriere (back) who would join the field for a 4 tournament competition that would determine the players in a 5th "SLAM" Tournament, a champion of Champions Tournament. All Tournaments will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Live video coverage, as well as demand video replays by the French TV Canal + will be available at the St. Jean de Luz Cesta Punta Youtube site.

The schedule in a nutshell (on a single page) (Cestapunta Facebook)

Matches will be played in sets, two to 15 points. Tie breaker will be to 5. 5 pasas (over serves) will be allowed in the course of a match. More than that, as well as any under serve, will result in a fault.

Note: the cumulative records of all players in these tournaments will be kept at the bottom of each Tournament blog post.

INJURY REPORT:

Jerome Portet (back) suffered an arm injury in practice before his play-in Final in the Internationaux Cesta Punta, Cesta Punta World Tour match. He missed that match. When he will return is unknown.

Note: to follow this tournament in  chronological order, read from the bottom up.

A note on Canal + scoring. I will provide Canal + scoring when it is for a complete set. So far, they have only provided scoring on screen (in the videos I've watched at the St. Jean de Luz Cesta Punta Youtube channel) for 1st sets. I will also provide my own full scoring for selected matches. There are three things to be aware of in Canal + scoring.

1. They count balls differently than I. I still haven't figured out how they count.

2. They do not credit a winner for a serve that is intercepted and then immediately converted into a point. It also appears they do not credit a winner for any return of serve immediatel ends in a point (see note on Inza's play in the final below).

3. They appear to be quite harsh on errors. It appears that most balls a player gets to and touches, but does not return, are either errors or not accounted for either way.

My scoring differs from theirs on each of  these points. I'm not going to judge either theirs or mine. I will attempt to provide you with as much information as possible. My model in scoring combines EITB's method of ball counting with an adaptation of the US Major League Baseball rule for errors: "Would a normal effort on the play be expected to yield a catch?" What is "normal effort" and "expected"? Ah... That's where the judgment comes in.

Match article (cestapunta.com FORTHCOMING AT THIS ADDRESS)
Match article (Jai Alai News Facebook)

Goikoetxea showed why he is widely regarded as the best player in the world by leading his team back from 2 late deficits (8-12 and 9-10) to win the Master 2 Final. During the comebacks he was +5 -1 and +4 -2. During each he threw tremendously hard in the enervating heat (an outside rebote that he recalibrated in mid-throw as he saw Egiguren racing left to cover; a left wall that Egiguren couldn't pick; a left wall big bounce, a hard shot that Basque couldn't pick on the short hop, and a rebote chic-chac in the 1st set; an overhand outside rocket from the 8-9; a cortada from the 8; a rebote left pass from the 9; and a left pass in the 2nd set). He wasn't perfect, making 6 errors (including 2 consecutive at the end of the match), but his ability to play a large area from the front court and to make hard throws from the 8 or 9 that other fronts make from the 4 or 5 was a huge difference maker.

Note: the videos begin at the beginning of  the point. They do not end at the end of the point.

Set 2:
Cortada from the 8 (7 ball point; 11-10--12-10)
Rebote left pass from the 9 (9 ball point; 12-10--13-10) See also for one of Basque's great catches, which also happened during this point.

Inza, if you look at his stats (particularly Canal + stats for the first set), he doesn't look particularly effective. But he was. He made several great saves, including 2 during the final point of the 1st set that literally saved the set. He also scored with very well placed back wall shots.

Set 1
Final point (12 ball point; 14-14--15-14) watch for the 4th and 10th ball.

Egiguren was magnificent, throwing his 42 year old body around for rebote saves, and making some excellent throws (his falling rebote left pass that won the 2nd point of the second set was arguably the shot of the match.

Set 2: Falling rebote left pass-- (6 ball point: 1-0--1-1)

Basque looked at times a bit over matched, but at other times made magnificent catches (see one of them above) and showed that at 23, he is one to be watched closely. He's going to get a lot better.

But in the end, it was 39 year old Inaki Osa Goikoetxea, who simply took the match and put it on his back, twice, at exactly the times it needed to be done. If that is not a definition of a great player, I don't know what is.

For the competition

Egiguren (partial) +28(2a) -7
Goikoetxea +26(2a) -6
Inza +7 -12
T. Basque (1 match only) +3 -6

Condensed Linescore (Canal +) (winners always listed first)

Set 1

2-0; 2-2; 3-2; 3-3; 5-3; 5-56-5; 6-88-8; 8-9; 9-99-10; 12-10; 12-11; 14-11; 14-13; 15-13

7 equal scores

Highlight video: (14 ball point; 14-13--15-13: Hormaetxea, after making consecutive great falling rebote saves, throws to the outside for the winner, but throws off the court.

Set 2

4-0; 4-2; 5-2; 5-3; 8-3; 8-4; 9-4; 9-5; 10-5; 10-6; 12-6; 12-9; 15-9

3 times in this set and 4 overall, Hormaetxea intercepted Goikoetxea's serve and followed with an immediate winner. 3 other times his interception attempts failed, due to great plays by I and G respectively, and his own error that ended the match. The 7 interceptions are a remarkable statistic against Goikoetxea, and show just how aggressive Hormaetxea was. For his part, Goikoetxea played a perfect match: +12 -0.

1st Semi-final

(Canal + via St. Jean-de-Luz Cesta Punta Youtube
(15-10, 15-9) (30-19)

Partial scoring (Canal +)

Egiguren +16 -2; Ithurria +5 -6

Note: these figures do not include Ithurria serves that did not clear the front and were intercepted by Egiguren, which he then immediately threw either 2 wall or left wall winners in return. There were 3 of these in the 2nd set. I took Canal +'s +9 in the first set (which I haven't seen yet) as the true number of winners.
