Remonte--Oriamendi2010 2019 Awards; February Rankings and Cumulative Win-Loss records for January-February 2020

This rankings update contains Oriamendi2010 February 2020 rankings, cumulative January-February win-loss records, cumulative January-February "Star Match" win-loss records, and "Star Match" leaderboards, along with a small section on the 2019 Oriamendi2010 Best Player awards, which were given out on February 29, 2020.

Oriamendi2010 Roster

Oriamendi2010 presents programs of 4 matches each on Thursdays and Saturdays. These are mostly pairs partido matches, played to 30, 35, or 40 points. There are also singles matches played to 30 points. The roster is divided into two groups based mostly on skill level. However (see below), many (26 matches out of 70 through the end of February) are played between teams of uneven skill levels. This mixing is one of the unique aspects of Oriamendi2010's Remonte competition and is always fascinating to follow.

The second match of each program is known as the "Star Match", the Marquee match of the day. More often than not, it is contested between two all "A" teams.

Interspersed in the programs throughout the year are several Tournaments (in 2019 there were 7). They are played under their own scoring rules (which can be some of the most complex and unique in all of Basque Pelota). The results of these tournaments stand alone, but are also incorporated into the Monthly Rankings that Oriamendi2010 provides.

At the end of each month Oriamendi2010 uses a rankings system that is based not only on wins and losses, but on the dominance of wins. The company provides a table of points allotted based on results. Any win (30, 35, or 40 points) is rewarded with 40 points. How many points match losers are allotted depends on the length of the matches and how many points they score. The maximum is 35, the minimum is 20. At the end of the month the company averages each player's total points, as the number of matches played by each player varies. So a perfect monthly record would be 40 points. A minimum of 4 matches must be played during the month to be included in the rankings.

One item that Oriamendi2010 does not provide is an easily accessible listing of each player's individual cumulative won-loss record throughout the year. Below you will find that information, sorted by winning percentage, This is an experiment on my part and I make no claim as to its accuracy. I sum the results every week to come up with the monthly totals you can find below. I also cross check these with the database of results Oriamendi2010 provides on an ongoing basis. Still, if you check my results against Oriameni2010's individual cumulative records (see the individual player pages), there are discrepancies. Their figures are, obviously, the official records. Mine are not. I am going to stick with my methods. I encourage you to check my results against theirs and draw your own conclusions. Corrections are always gladly accepted.

For those who wish to follow Oriamendi2010 Remonte on a program by program basis, I keep a page of ongoing results and program by program win-loss tables. There are almost always links to Oriamend2010 Star Match previews and match articles. Often you will find selected linescores and scoring taken from the match articles. Results for the other 3 matches of each program can also be found there. Tournaments are also covered there, as well as in the main blog.

February 2020 Summary:

Oriamendi2010 had a very busy February, beginning with the Semi-finals and Finals of  El Torneo Master UTS Individual singles competition, won in one of the most exciting and entertaining matches in a long time by Barrenetxea IV (Group A Zaguero (back) 30-29 over Urriza (Group A Delantero (front), and ending with the annual awards announcements on February 29.

Awards announcement article (Oriamendi2010)

The best overall player award went to (Endika Barrenetxea (Zaguero-back)), the best Group A player (also Barrenetxea IV), and the best Group B player (Kemen Ansa?--Aldabe (Delantaro--front).

Barrenetxea IV broke a 6 year overall best player streak by Javier Urriza. He did it by beating Urriza in the Finals of the two major singles Tournaments, the Torneo Individual Kutxabank last September, and the Master UTS Individual  on February 8, 2020. He also won the Torneo de Azpetia (with Aldabe) last October. He was runner up (with Ansa II) in the San Fermin Tournament (scroll to "Remonte") last July and in the Orona Campeonato Parejas (with Matxin III) held last November-December. For calendar year 2019, Barrenetxea IV had the best winning % among Group A Zagueros (46-41; 53%). He also played the most matches of anyone on the roster (87).

For calendar year 2019, Aldabe had the best record (by winning %) of anyone on the roster (38-28; 58%).

February Summary:

9 programs and 35 matches were contested. Ezkurra II (B-D) continued his comeback from injury, slowly finding his rhythm. By the end of February he had a record of 3 wins and 7 losses, but had won his last two matches, including a 2 v 3 match that was part of the "Day of Remonte" celebration and awards ceremony. According to the match article, he had a terrific match in leading his team (consisting of Juanenea (B-D) an Ion (A-Z) to a 40-36 win over Urriza-Barrenetxea IV, the two best players on the roster at the moment.

Urriza was 3-2 (if you include the 2 v 3 match), and that was enough to win the monthly rankings Group A championship. His 5 matches were decided by a total of 15 points. Zaldua (Z) won the Group B championship. He made his first appearance since December on February 6 and had a 3-1 record for the month. The highlight was a comprehensive victory with Zeberio II (A-D) over Juanenea-Labaka (B-B), who have the 2020 cumulative best records through the end of February (see below), on February 20. Zeberio II had a great match, and Zaldua provided excellent support. Zaldau was a little over a year old when Zeberio II began his career in 1995.

The best match of the month after the UTM Final (see above) was the "Star Match" of February 13, a 40-39 victory by Aldabe-Barrenetxea IV (B-A--the two award winners) over veterans Zeberio II-Ion (A-A). Down 37-39, A-B scored the final 3 points of the match (the final point an Aldabe winner). See the match article here. The linescore should give you a feel for just how exciting a match this was.

Remonte--New Recurring Match Results page for Oriamendi2010

This blog has covered Oriamendi2010 Remonte programs (every Tuesday and Thursday there are programs of 4 matches played at Galaretta, Hernani (1) (2)). The old Page that covered the modality going back to 2016 has become large and unwieldy so I have decided to convert it into an archive, which will still be available under the "Pages" on the right side of the blog, below the current results. Or you can access that page HERE.

I have created a new page to cover from 2020 until it becomes to unwieldy again. I like to keep all historical information about a modality in one place so readers can scroll down and follow the sport over a period of history.

I have also made some upgrades and improvements to the page.

1. I am keeping "Star Match" (the 2nd match of each 4 match program, which usually features the best roster match ups and the Finals of Tournaments) cumulative win-loss tables.

2. Cumulative accounting of uneven pairs matches. Oriamendi2010 divides its roster into "A" and "B" Groups, but mixes and matches the groups regularly so that pairs matches can be A-A v A-B; A-A v B-B; or A-B v B-B.

3. Cumulative accounting with overall win-loss records of players by Group and playing position. In the past I have kept this on a month to month basis, due to the fact that Oriamendi2010 hands out Best of the Month recognition to players with the best monthly records. One can find cumulative yearly win-loss records at the web site, but only player by player, one at at time. It is hoped that this table will be a quick, "one stop" destination for readers who are interested in how players are doing in the larger annual context.

4. Additional match statistics. Oriamendi2010 provides excellent Star Match previews and match articles, usually accompanied by selected linescores and individual scoring. To that I am adding total match scoring and other derived statistics when available. This will allow readers to see how the average number of winners and errors in a match trends, and compare that to other modalities that I am doing this for. For Tournament Finals, when available, I will also be adding Non error %, individual Saves and Save %, average balls per point, and other derivative statistics that will hopefully at least entertain, and possibly educate.

The new page, which begins coverage on December 31, 2020 and is up to date, can be found among the "Pages" on the right side of the blog below the current results, but can also be accessed directly HERE.

Feedback is always welcome, as are corrections.

Remonte--Oriamendi2010 Rankings and Win-Loss records for January 2020

Oriamendi2010 January 2020 rankings and win-loss records.

However (see below), many (sometimes close to half--this month 15 of 35 matches) are played between teams of uneven skill levels. This mixing is one of the unique aspects of Oriamendi2010's Remonte competitions and is always fascinating to follow.

Below you will find that information, sorted by winning percentage, cumulatively, and provided in these rankings blog posts. This is an experiment on my part and I make no claim as to its accuracy.

=============

January Summary:

Oriamendi2010 began the New Year with results from a New Year's Eve program of only 3 matches. It contained 9 programs and 35 matches. On January 4, an A-A v A-A-B 2 on 3 match was held. This was one of 15 uneven group matches held during the month. Of those matches, 8 were won by the higher ranking group. The most surprising result of these matches was the B-B's 2-0 record against the A-A's.

Endika (Group A Zaguero (back) was the only player to play in each position (he played 1 match in the front). Juanenea (B-D) had the longest winning streak (he lost his 1st and last match of the month, but sandwiched 5 consecutive wins between them). His 2 losses were uneven B-B v A-B. 2 of his wins were uneven (A-B v A-A (Juanenea-Barrenetxea IV v Urriza-Agirrezabala--in which he outscored Urriza by +21 -3 to +17 -7 in a 40-36 win, and B-B v A-A).
Endika was 5-1 in the back and 0-1 in the front to lead the A Group. He won one match with Juanenea and had an incredible match on January 23 where he was +22 (15 winners in play) -4, a phenomenal total for a back.

Juanenea also carried the heaviest load for the month and average of 78.86 total points in 7 matches).

Remonte--Oriamendi2010 2019 Summary

Oriamendi2010 recently completed its 2019 Season.

Oriamendi2010  Player pages

Oriamendi2010 plays a program of 4 matches at Galarreta, Hernani (1) (2) every Thurday and Saturday.

The roster is divided into "A" players and "B" players. The second of the 4 matches on the program is called the "Star Match", the marquee match of the program.

In 2019 7 Championship Tournaments were contested. Oriamendi2010 also runs a monthly competition among all players on the roster. Each match is assigned points based on the score. For matches played to 40, 35, or 30 points, the winner gets 40 points, For the losers, points are allotted based a a chart available at Oriamendi 2010 Rankings page (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page). Complete records of every month's competition are available at the site. Points allotment are below those records. The idea is that every point is important, and a close loss will help a team or individual more than a decisive one.

For a long time on this blog, I kept monthly records of what each player's win- loss record was. I have decided to change the way I cover the competition, so that I will keep track of players' overall record during the year. These records are available on the Players page above, but you have to look at the records one player at a time. This is a cumbersome process which I hope to make easier for those who are interested in comparative statistics.

Below you will find win % sorts for delanteros (fronts) and zagueros (backs) by group. There are also sorts by matches played.

2019 final records are presented below. Full Tournament coverage for all tournaments is linked below, which makes this a "one stop shopping" destination for all things Oriamendi2010 in 2019.

================

Remonte final 2019 Win-Loss records: by Position within Group: Note: Totals add to 766 wins and 781 losses. In theory, for every win there should be a corresponding loss. There were not enough known 2 v 3 matches to make up the difference. My method was to copy the Oriamendi numbers directly from the player pages. There was no information that I could find on the player pages for Arruarte, Urtasun, or Benat. For those players I extracted matches from the Oriamendi2010 results database and hand counted the results.

Aldabe, Ansa II, Ezkurra II, Segurola, Arruarte, and Larranaga (from Group B) each won 1 Tournament. (Segurola and Ezukura II also won 2 monthly awards for best play).

INJURY REPORT:

September 20, 2019

Eric Irastorza: Irastorza, who has been out of action with a leg injury since mid-July, was unable to play in the Zumaia Master Semi-final on September 20. He was also unable to  play in the Ciudad San Sebastian match on October 26.

August 4, 2019

Imanol Lopez: Lopez suffered an arm injury early in the 1st set of the Lekeitio Masters Final on August 4. He had to leave for treatment but returned to finish the match. All of his throws from that point forward (except for 2 or 3 soft dejadas from deep in the back) were reverses. He is scheduled to play up to 5 matches the week of August 5-10, including 2 possible finals (Gant d'Or if he wins the semi-final 1st, and the Gernika Grand Slam). How many, if any, of those matches he is able to play remains to be seen. So far this summer, after winning the 2 Championships at Fronton Mexico, he is 9-0 in the Basque Country Summer Partidos, with 2 Championships.

Lopez missed his Semi-final Gant d'Or match on August 5. In an interview with Jai Alai News Facebook on August 7, he said that his arm was responding to treatment "incredibly" well and that he planned to play in the Gernika Grand Slam Final on Saturday, August 10. He is going to take the other matches he is scheduled to play "a day at a time", according to the article.

He played in the 1st Semi-Final of the St. Jean de Luz Cesta Punta World Tour Master 4 on August 8 and lost in the tie breaker by the minimum, ending a 14 match winning streak. He played in a Hondarribia Grand Slam League match on August 9 and won in straight sets. He played in the Gernika Grand Slam and won--again in straight sets, running his new winning streak to 2 and 16 of the last 17. All this with an injured right arm that did not allow him to throw forehand until the Gernika match. In that match he used it sparingly but effectively (including one long low and slow cortada winner in the 2nd set). That he played at all was amazing. That he won 2 out of 3 was phenomenal.

He re-injured the arm in a Zumaia Masters Semi-final on September 27. He played in the last two matches of the season, splitting them.

July 28, 2019

Mikel EgigurenFor Egiguren the stress of having played 2 matches in 3 days (July 25 in the Cesta Punta World Tour Master 2 Final, and July 27 in the Jai Alai World Tour Gernika Grand Slam Liguilla match), along with the prospect of playing in the 1st Semi-Final of the CPWT Master 3 Tournament on July 30, led to his dropping out of the Leikeitio Masters Semi-final on July 28.

July 27, 2019

Txabi Inza: After playing twice in 3 days (July 23 and 25 in the Semi-final and Final of the CPWT Master 2 Tournament, Inza was unable to play in the 3rd Round Liguilla match of the Gernika Grand Slam. He was replaced by (Aimar) Aldazabal. I have found no information about the reason for his absence. Inza returned to play in the Final of the Gant d'Or Tournament at Biarritz on August 7. He won.

July 26, 2019

Diego Beaskoetxea: Beaskoetxea was unable to play in his Hondarribia League match with Minvielle v Erik-Ekhi on June 26. According to the JAWT story (the same story for all matches), he decided to skip the June 26 Hondarribia Grand Slam League match in order to be more physically fit for the Gernika Grand Slam League match on July 27. (He was replaced by Ludovic Laduche. Beaskoetxea did play (and win) his League 3 Gernika match on July 27.

July 20, 2019

Nicolas Etcheto: Etcheto suffered an abdominal injury ("un pinchazo en la cintura") in warm-ups for his Round 2 Liguilla match in the Gernika Grand Slam. He played through it for one set but then could go no further. Etcheto returned to action on July 28 for his Lekeitio Masters Semi-final, partnering with Egiguren in a hard fought loss to (Jon) Zulaika-Lopez.

July 13, 2019

(Unai) Lekerika: Lekerika suffered a "cintura" (waist) injury in his July 13 opening Liguilla Group A match in the Gernika Grand Slam competition. He was unable to play in his Markina Masters semi-final match with Arbe v Erik (Mendizabal)-Irastorza on July 14. He was replaced by Ekhi. He returned to action, partnering with Goikoetxea on July 27 in their Gernika Grand Slam Liguilla match.

July 7, 2019

Jean Olharan: Olharan missed his Quarter final match in the Master Series Markina, still feeling the effects of the shoulder injury he played through in the Fronton Mexico in the Moises Cosio Gomez Copa Premier League Final on June 30. Olharan returned in the Gant d'Or Quarter-final on July 31. He was re-injured (back) in a Tournament at Mauleon on August 9. He missed Master 4. (Latest Source: Jai Alai News Facebook and Cesta Punta St. Jean Facebook). He played in the Zumaia Masters and at Gernika to close the season.

Ludovic Laduche: Laduche (who suffered a severe tendon injury in the April 26, 2019 FFPB (Federation Francais de Pelote Basque) Pro-Am Final. He missed the entire Fronton Mexico season and returned as a substitute for Olharan in the Master Series Markina on July 7. For more on Laduche's injury, including full match video of the match he was injured in, check the NEWS AND INJURY ARCHIVE OF THIS BLOG. Injuries are listed under obituaries and news items, in reverse chronological order. Modalities are mixed together.

JAWT Matches were played in sets, two to 15. Tie breaker to 5. 5 pasas (over serves) were allowed. After that any over serve was a fault. Any under serve was immediately penalized.

Match article (Jai Alai World Tour)

Imanol Lopez, nursing a quadriceps injury along with a right bicep that is still recovering from a serious injury suffered during the summer, found a way to make the big plays when he had to, and came from behind to defeat Aimar Aldazabal (the veteran front who played this entire season in the back) to win his 2nd Singles championship. But it was anything but easy. Aldazabal, a heavy "underdog", played superbly and twice came to within 2 points of a great upset. But he couldn't quite get over the top, and a simple error in the tie breaker (see above) finally did him in. The match was played on the 48 meter court at Berriatua, in my opinion a perfect length court for Cesta Punta singles matches. The long court at Dania Beach, Florida (where world class singles quiniela matches are held every performance) seems to me a little too long for singles, and the 38 meter court at Bizkaia (Bilbo (Bilbao)), where this tournament has been played in the recent past, seems a little too short. But here, back wall shots were a little easier to defend, which made for some great rebotes. In addition, both players showed great touch on their dejadas (drop shots), landing them from mid-court.

The 13 equal scores in the match testify to its closeness and competitiveness. The biggest lead all night was the 5-0 lead Lopez carved out at the beginning of the 2nd set, a thunderous reply to his narrow defeat in the 1st. But Aldazabal was unflappable, and fought back with a 7-2 run to tie the score. There were 3 equal scores after that before Lopez took the last two points. Aldazabal was in control of the tie breaker until the unfortunate error. Lopez then quickly closed the proceedings with a perfect chic-chac on the first throw he had after the serve.

Berriatua is Aldazabal's home town, so the large, appreciative crowd went home a little disappointed, no doubt. But they saw a great match, won by a great champion who always seems to "figure out a way," no matter what the obstacles. Lopez closed out a fantastic 6 months in which he won the Championship at Fronton Mexico, The Gernika Grand Slam, and this title, an impressive trifecta. In Mexico, Hegoalde (South Basque) and Ipparalde (North Basque), his overall record was 27-10 (not counting a loss in Mexico in a hastily arranged 15 point partido where he played in the front). He also had a 14 match winning streak during this period. At 35, he is still by far the best zaguero (back) in the world. Is he the best overall in the world? Perhaps, perhaps not. There is a puntista named Inaki Goikoetxea, who also won a "trifecta" (Gant d'Or, Cesta Punta Pro Tour SLAM, and the Fronton Mexico Championship). Let the debate begin :).

This was JAWT's final pairs match of the season and pitted the Iparralde (North Basque) double champions (Gant d'Or and Saint-Jean-de-Luz SLAM) against the Gernika Grand Slam champions. Beaskoetxea had a great match (as he also had in the Gernika GS Final on August 10 v Goikoetxea-(Unai) Lekerika), scoring over half his team's points. He scored about once every 5 1/2 times he threw the pelota (17.8% of his throws). Goikoetxea didn't exctly have a bad game (once every 8 throws--12.8%).

At the end of the match, Erik Mendizabal won the season's Best Front award (received by his father Jesus Mari--Erik was playing at Dania) and Lopez won the season's Best Back).
