It was a match of power and relatively short points, many of which were breathtaking in spotlighting the strength, quickness, and grace of the contestants. Things that stood out to one fan:

Gregory Aguirre's high, booming serves that netted a good number of points, and the way he "changed up" on his serve, mixing the high boomers with hard low left and right side serves. This feature of his game kept N-L off balance.

Louiz Sanchez' mobility. He seemed to be everywhere, and didn't eschew charging forward and playing offense when opportunities arose. His 6 direct points led all scorers.

The patience with which A-S achieved their task, not in the length of individual points, but in the body language that never showed panic (even though Sanchez was quite vocal and there was occasional miscommunication between the winners) and indicated quiet confidence.

Mattin Olcomendy cemented his place as the most valuable player in this tournament, leading his team to a championship with +23 (including 11 service aces and 6 direct points) in a hard fought, almost 2 hour final. O-L got off to a great start, building a 10 point lead at the end of the second decade. They stretched that lead to 16 points by the end of the 7th decade. But then, after their lead reached 18, M-C began a furious comeback, outscoring their opponents 16-2 and almost erasing the deficit. At 47-43 they "ran out of gas", and M-O finished it off by winning the final 3points.

M-C got off to an awful start but persevered. A 23-7 early run put them in command and might have allowed them to coast home. But I-I were not finished. They chipped away at the lead through the third and fourth decade and finally equalized at 40. But, as often happens (not especially surprising given the stamina that a 50 point match demands) the energy they had to use might have deplete them just as they caught up. Whether that was actually the case is unknown, but the resulting 10-3 M-C run clinched the victory. They now move into the Final against the winner of Aguirre-Etchegaray v Olcomendy-X. Lambert, which will be played next Monday. That match offers a very intriguing duel in the back court, where Julien Etchegaray, normally a front court player, but playing back in this Tournament, goes up against long time veteran Esku Pilota A back Ximun Lambert. In the 2nd Quarterfinal Olcomendy ruined Cedric Lucu's day with 15 service aces (see below). It will be interesting to see what he has planned for Etchegaray.

I-G built a big lead early, but E-P fought back by keeping I-A from building on that lead and then, with a 7-0 run, came within 5 points of equality. But then I-G broke the match open with a 13-0 run in response. And they finished with a 11-4 run to turn what had been a match with intriguing possibilities into a route. For Inchauspe, it was his second match in three days, having been part of a 40-24 defeat against Monce-Harismendy in the FFPB Championnat de France Elite Pro par Equipes "Barrage" match between Group B Qualification first place and Group A fourth Place. He lost his chance at promotion, but didn't let it bother him in this match. He played a total of 139 points in three days. Though I have no source to confirm this, it is looking like the Lundi Garat matches are a sort of "King of the Hill" competition, where a winning pair keeps playing until another pair beats them. Olcomendy-Harismendy started the year with 3 consecutive wins. E-G beat them two weeks ago and have now defended once. This match was extremely hard fought, with 17 or 18 (depending on the source) equal scores. The final equality was at 37. After that E-G took over the match and finished with a 13-5 run.

Just another Lundi au Garat! Magnifique!!!

Of course this doesn't begin to tell the story of this match. A simple Lundi match, to 50 points. And yet the way this match was contested was amazing. It began with a 33 bip opening point. The second decade began with 46 and 48 bip points. Everyone played superbly until the final decade, when everyone "ran out of gas." If there was a star of the match it was Mattin Olcomendy, who worked over Maxim Etcheverry with his serve several times, before Ximun Lambert took the responsibility off his hands. Maxim Etcheverry had his moments, saving several points (for the time being, anyway) that seemed impossible to save and unleashing, on occasion, a powerful serve of his own. Ximun Lambert played very solid defense and contributed greatly with several beautiful direct point filet shots. And ancient (37 year old) Thierry Harismendy came out for the third week in a row and played magnificent defense, had several excellent direct points, and finished the match off with three winners. Only in the final decade of the match did these Herculean players produce anything less than excellent Main Nue, in my opinion. By my count (which is certainly subjective--of course yours may be different), errors accounted for 17 of the 91 points. 5 of those errors came in the last decade. All this in a traditional match that had no significance in terms of ranking or tournament standing that I know of. But absolutely riveting to watch. The effort of all involved was outstanding. Main Nue, played like this, is a beautiful sport to watch.

E-L handed A-L their first loss in the tournament in the final. E-L were in control much of the way. A-L made a comeback in the 5th decade to cut the lead in half. but E-L then drew away to an easy victory, outscoring A-L 18-7. The Goizeko Izarra tourmament page emphasized ("mention speciale") the performance of Lucu. A-L finished 3-1. E-L finished with the same record. Elgart-Lucu win the 23rd Coup de Chasseurs.

Note that the final has been postponed and rescheduled for November 7, 2016. Elgart-Lucu played (and lost) the final of Tournoi Ossau Iraty on October 27, 2016. It was a grueling 40-39 loss.

G-23rd CdC--October 24, 2016--2nd Semi-Final: Elgart (substituting for Ospital)-Lucu* defeated Darmandrail*-Benesse* 50-40.

This was the second semi-final of the tournament. It was close until the last decade of the match, according to the brief match story, when E-L took command. Lucu was especially noted for excellent play. Darmendrail*-Bennesse* finish the tournament 2-1. Next Monday, October 31, the final will be played between Aguirre-Lafitte* (substituting for Iturbe*) and Elgart (substituting for Ospital)- Lucu*. It will be an all Poule A final, with A-L the only undefeated team in the tournament (3-0). E-L are now 2-1. In Poule play three weeks ago A-L defeated Olcomendy* (substituting for Ospital)-Lucu* 50-44.

G-23rd CdC--October 17, 2016--1st Semi-Final: Aguirre-Lafitte* (substituting for Iturbe*) defeated Monce*-Cubiat* 50-49.

Of the 8 matches played so far, this was the 4th match decided by 10 points or less, the 3rd match by 3 points or less, and the 2nd match by the 99th point. The match statistics reveal a tremendous struggle. There were 8 equal scores, including 48-48 and 49-49. At 36-44, M-C seemingly had the match won. But from there A-L charged back, using a 14-5 run to finally win. The winners were behind at every decade mark except the first. Both front courters scored more than 20 pts. The match lasted 1:55:29. Actual play lasted 54:27. It's difficult to imagine a more exciting match. Monce*-Cubiat* finish the tournament 1-2. Next Monday, October 24, the second semi-final, Darmandrail*-Benesse* v Elgart (substituting for Ospital) Lucu*. The final will take place on Monday, October 31.

This was the final match in the league phase of the tournament. With the victory D-B won poule B. Next Monday, October 17, the first semi-final will feature the winner of Poule A, Aguirre-Lafitte* (substituting for Iturbe*) v the loser of today's match and second place finisher in Poule B, Monce*-Cubiat*. On the following Monday, October 24, the winning team in today's match will face the second place finisher in Poule A. Unless the substitution patterns change, that match will feature Darmandrail*-Benesse* (substituting for Lazcano) v Olcomendy* (substituting for Ospital)-Lucu*. The two semi-final winners will meet in the final on Monday, October 31.

The match statistics indicate a hard fought battle. 9 equal scores. Equality as late as 29-29. No team had a lead greater than 6 points at any decade mark. An hour and 55 minute struggle of which nearly an hour was actual play. In short, a great Garat 50 point match! It was the 3rd out of 6 tournament matches to be decided by less than 10 points.

This was the third and final Poule A match. By winning, Aguirre-Lafitte* finished undefeated at the top of the poule. On Oct. 17, they will face the loser of next week's final Poule B match between Darmendrail*-Benesse* (substituting for Lazcano) and Monce*-Cubiat*. This match was played on Tuesday instead of Monday because both Ducassou and Guichandut had played in the final of the Tournois Chilhar de Souraide on Sunday, August 14, a 63 point match. Each had also played a semi-final (against each other) in the same tournament on August 12. That was a 61 point match. So this Garat match was delayed one day. In total, in five days they played 208 points. Ducassou's team won all three matches.

For Inchauspe and Amulet, this match was one of three that they played in four days. Two days earlier they won a 67 point match in the semi-finals of the Tournois Espela d'Espelette.The day after, they played in the final of that tournament, a 66 point match. This marathon Garat match lasted an hour and 50 minutes and 98 points.They played 231 points in the three matches, winning one match, losing one, and splitting one. One can only imagine what their hands must have felt like on the evening of August 9.

There are two errors in my commentary that I know of.

Point 3 consumed 1 ball in play (a service ace), not 11. So all of the total balls in play for the first 10 points and the running total balls in play for the match should be adjusted accordingly. The total number of balls in play for the match should be 864, not 874.
