Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Fronton Mexico Tournament 3--Premier and National League--May 31-June 9, 2019

Fronton Mexico's short 2019 season began on May 3 and will end on June 30, 2019. It is made up of 4 sets of two tournaments, an "A" tournament (Premier League) and a "B" tournament (National League).

FM Roster

Each tournament will be  played over the course of two weekends, the first weekend a preliminary round, the second a semi-final and final. At present each tournament will contain either 4 or 6 pairs. After the first 4 tournaments, a 5th tournament, a tournament among the highest ranking players, will be held to crown two "Champion of Champions" winners. The winners of the Premier League will win the Copa Moises Cosio Trophy.

 Parts or all of each Tournament will be streamed live via Fronton Mexico Facebook. (Consult FM website, Facebook or Twitter for times (Twitter is the quickest way to get the times, consult it the day of the matches). For those who miss the live transmissions, the matches are available on demand at the Facebook site. Selected matches may also be available at the FM Youtube site.

Note: as of July 3, 2019, all matches from Tournament 2-5 have been uploaded to the FM Youtube site. For this final Tournament, Youtube addresses will be given, as they are more easily accessible. For the previous tournaments, I will leave the Facebook addresses as they are, but add this note to the blog pages.

Tournament 3: May 31-June 9 2019

Premier League and National League Tournaments

T3 Information (Fronton Mexico Facebook Events)

Note: All T3 matches were played as single 30 point partidos.

Pemier League consisted of 4 teams:

Olharan**-Lopez;
(Aritz) Erkiaga-Ekhi;
Goikoetxea*-Inza;
Olha-Irastorza**

* Winner of Tourmament 1 **Winner of Tournament 2

There was a single Round Robin From May 31-June 7. Final was on June 9.

National League was a 6 team competition.

There were two groups:

Group A: Inclan-Mauricio; Polanco-Perez*; Ochoa*-Echinique

Group B: Ortega-Del Rio+**; Juan Leon**-Portet; Sierra-Ihitsague

* Winner of the first National League Tournament;
** Winner of the 2nd NL Tournamet;
+ Winner of the 1st Premier League Tournament

There was a Group Round Robin May 31-June 7. Semi-Finals (A1-B2; B1-A2) were on June 8. Final was on June 9.

--------------

As the third Tournament finished, some fans began to wonder about the workload these players are carrying. The format was changed from two sets of 15 with a tie breaker to 5 to 30 point partidos. It took the teams most of the first weekend to adjust to the change, judging by the scores (see below). The second weekend was much more competitive, with the two finals each being decided by 4 points. But this tournament came with price tag. Jean Olharan, who was really beginning to assert himself, was injured in a meaningless Round Robin match (his team had qualified for the final by the end of the first week, his opponents were eliminated, also in the first week), forcing the suspension of the match and a quick change to a 15 point "friendly" that featured Imanol Lopez playing in the front court. In the final on Sunday, Txabi Inza had to retire with an injury. He was replaced by Edwardo Cordova, a National League player. So the final matchup never materialized and ended up as Olha-Lopez v Goikoetxea-Cordova.

This roster is being asked to play 7 matches every weekend. The format of 4 teams with semi-finals and finals that is a staple at the Internationaux Cesta Punta Tournaments in St. Jean de Luz and the Jai Alai World Tour, played all over the South Basque country, asks players to play a maximum of three matches in a tournament. JAWT tournaments, it is true, sometimes feature 8 teams, with quarterfinals added, but an extra week is added as well. Since some of the players play in the tournaments of both companies, it can be pretty taxing. See the complete  results of the 2018 and 2016 Partido Seasons in the Basque Country for comparison.

Player burnout is not an issue unique to Fronton Mexico. But there are some things that exacerbate a taxing workload.

1. Age of the players. Of the 8 players who play the lions share of Premier League matches, only 2 (Ekhi and Olharan) are under 30. Aritz Erkiaga is the only player between 30-34. Lopez, Inza, Goikoetxea, and Ohla are between 35 and 40. Irastorza is 41. They are all very effective players, still the best in the world, aging like fine wine, etc. But scheduling that asks them to play two matches in two nights, as has often been the case in the first three tournaments, is asking for trouble.

2. The Fronton. FM is, by some accounts, 62 meters long, a full 8 meters longer than a standard 54 meter Jai Alai concha. It is the longest concha in the world. This takes adjusting to and is physically taxing.

3. The format. As mentioned, Round Robin or League formats, which all the tournaments so far have been, demand 3 matches of all participants, 4 for the finalists. They are spread over two weeks, but within each week, there can be very difficult and taxing periods for players. And forcing a team like Olharan-Lopez to play a meaningless match in the context of the tournament, again, is asking for trouble. And trouble is what FM got last week.

4. Format switching. Switching from sets to full 30 point partidos in the middle of the season seems to serve no purpose, and actually hurt the competitive balance until the players adjusted. As this is posted, I have not been able to find a Tournament 4 schedule, and so don't know what the format will be.

Of course it is understandable that FM wants to get as many matches in as possible, for economic reasons. But asking these players to put on 70 matches over a 10 week period, with a relatively small Premier roster, given all the other factors listed above, is, I think dangerous for the players. Hopefully, the injured players will return and fans will be able to watch the best Jai Alai in the world. Hopefully.

Scoring (Goizeko Izarra--Henry Ocafrain)

Note: Mr. Ocafrain's scored selected matches. His original spreadsheets, saved as .gifs, were publicly available for only one week, as Goizeko Izarra, the organizer of these 50 point matches, does not archive its information on each match. I copied out the records for historical and preservation purposes.

Note: Xareat=pelota hit into the side dugout protective netting without bouncing first, an automatic direct point. A Pumpa Xare is the same, except the pelota goes into the mesh after bouncing once. Pelotas can be hit into the back dugout, which is not protected by netting, and which also results in an automatic direct point. Whether Mr. Ocafrain counted these as X/PX is unknown.

Olcomendy +23 (including 11 service aces and 6 direct points--5 xareat and 1 pumpa xare) -9; X. Lambert +8 (including 2 direct points--2 pumpa xare) -7

Monce +13 (6a, 2dp--2 xareat) -6; Cubiat +14 (7dp--6 xareat and 1 pumpa xare) -13

Time of the match: 1 hour 56 minutes 37 seconds
Actual playing time: 55:41

Mattin Olcomendy cemented his place as the most valuable player in this tournament, leading his team to a championship with +23 (including 11 service aces and 6 direct points) in a hard fought, almost 2 hour final. O-L got off to a great start, building a 10 point lead at the end of the second decade. They stretched that lead to 16 points by the end of the 7th decade. But then, after their lead reached 18, M-C began a furious comeback, outscoring their opponents 16-2 and almost erasing the deficit. At 47-43 they "ran out of gas", and M-O finished it off by winning the final 3points.

For the tournament, the figures we have for Olcomendy read:

+15 service aces;
+30 (including 17 aces);
+23 (including 11 aces and 6 direct points).

For the last 2 matches he was +30 -5 and +23 -9, for a total of +53 -14, with 28 aces. His team finished the Tournament 3-0; 150-88. M-C, who finished 2-1; 143-122, scored almost as many points as O-L's first two opponents combined.

For the Tournament

Olcomendy-X. Lambert; 3-0; 150-88
Monce-Cubiat; 2-1; 143-122
Inchauspe-Iturbe; 1-1; 93-81

Olcomendy had an overpowering match (+30 (including 17 service aces)), scoring more points than both his opponents combined, and completely wearing out Etchegaray, a front court player playing in the back. A-E got off to a great start, before a 15-8 run put O-L back in it by mid-match. Then came the coup de grace, a 13 point run that put the match out of reach. But O-L kept on going, winning their final decade 10-2.

M-C got off to an awful start but persevered. A 23-7 early run that included 11 consecutive points, put them in command and might have allowed them to coast home. But I-I were not finished. They chipped away at the lead through the third and fourth decade and finally equalized at 40. But, as often happens (not especially surprising given the stamina that a 50 point match demands) the energy they had to use might have depleted them just as they caught up. Whether that was actually the case is unknown, but the resulting 10-3 M-C run clinched the victory.  They now move into the Final against the winner of  Aguirre-Etchegaray v Olcomendy-X. Lambert, which will be played next Monday. That match offers a very intriguing duel in the back court, where Julien Etchegaray, normally a front court player, but playing back in this Tournament, goes up against long time veteran Esku Pilota A back Ximun Lambert. In the 2nd Quarterfinal Olcomendy ruined Cedric Lucu's day with 15 service aces (see below). It will be interesting to see what he has planned for Etchegaray.

Monce led the way with 11 aces.  Cubiat had an excellent, precise match with 9 direct points. For B-P Palomas had difficult day at the office, struggling with Monce's serve and making 14 errors. Bielle had a quiet day.

Irribarria, who will be 23 in July, won his second Buruz Buruko/Campionato Manomanista World Singles championship in the last 4 years , an incredibly difficult come from behind win over Mikel Urrutikoetxea in front of "packed house" at Bizkaia, Bilbo (Bilbao) on June 8. He came from 5 points behind twice and another time from 15-17. Since turning professional in 2015, Irribarria has also won the World Pairs championship in 2017 and was runner-up in the 2017 Singles and 2019 Pairs championship. Quite a beginning for what could be a sensational career. Known early in his career for an incredibly powerful left hand "steam shovel" that could easily hit the back walls of frontons (memorably, he hit one that crashed off the front wall and slammed against the ceiling, coming down so hard that it rolled almost to the back wall while EITB was tracking its trajectory), he has refined his game quite a bit in the last 3 years. Still young and prone to errors of aggression, he seems to have no ceiling for his success in Mano when he really figures out the modality. His hustle and talent are always a joy to watch, unless you happen to be opposing him.

Bizkaia, Bilbo (Bilbao) (1) (2)

The only survivor of the 1/8 seeded players in the Banakako Txapelketa/Campionato Manomanista (Singles) championship advanced to the Final when he demolished the man who beat him in the recently concluded Binakako Txapelketa/Mundo Parejas (Pairs) championship, Danel Elezkano, 22-12. Irribarria did it with dominant figures: +16 (including 3 service aces) - 2. Of his 13 non service ace points, 8 came on high and deep shots. Astelena (Eibar) is one of the smaller conchas (courts) that professionals play on. Still it was remarkable that one of Irribarria's "steam shovel" bombs actually hit the back wall, a site seldom seen in Mano. Several other deep shots put Elezkano in such a poor position that Irribarria was able to win points with easy kill shots. Elezkano's precision short offense and tremendous defense in the front court was useless against Irribaria's bombs. It is always impressive to see him get his left hand under the ball and crash it high off the wall. "Meet Irribarria's hand, see the Basque Country," the pelotas say when they talk to each other. He also played very well with his right hand in this match, which is more "bad news" for his opponents. This match propelled him into the Final on June 2 at Bizkaia, Bilbo (Bilbao), against Mikel Urrutikoetxea. Urrutikoetxea is a big, strong, converted back court player, so he may have the tools to counter Irribarria's power. But Irribarria is riding a wave of momentum. This will be the second time in the last four years the two have met in this final. In the first, in 2016, when both had recently burst on the scene, Irribarria won 22-13. Full match video of that match is available via EITB.

Match article (21Iguales)

Urrutikoetxea punched his ticket to the final, using a 10 point run that gave him a 14-4 lead, as the springboard to victory. The match was fairly even before and after that. Urrutikoetxea jumped off to 9-3 lead, but Ezkurdia cut that to 4. After the big run, Ezkurdia outscored Urrutikoetxea by 2, too little, too late. Urrutkoetxea did not have the best day (-7), but his +17 neutralized the errors. Ezkurdia simply couldn't get his offense going (+7) and his 5 errors pretty much nullified that.

Olharan-Irastorza (3-1) 2 (Aritz) Erkiaga-Inza (2-2) 1 (Fronton Mexico Facebook--match begins at -1:27:50 (move the slider bar from the RIGHT TO -1:27:50) (15-14; 14-15; 5-2)

Match article (Jai Alai y Mas Facebook--Fernando Sierra Felgueres

The linescore says it all about this match. The maximum number of points in a set based match like this is 67. The match ups were fantastic, the electric athleticism and "joi de vivre" of Olharan v the precision of Erkiaga; the power of Irastorza (even now, at over 40 years old) v Inza's strategy to hit the ball deep (and on the FM court, the longest in the world, not an easy assignment) and keep Irastorza from using his lethal overhand and forehand throws. It was not, from a technical perspective, the best of matches (the tie breaker was decided by errors). But for sheer spectacle and fun (FM leaves no stone un-turned in those departments), if you have never seen a CP/Jai Alai match, this would be a great place to start. And if you've seen hundreds, this would be an excellent choice for your next one.

One of the major themes of this Tournament was the "coming of age" of Jean Olharan. He will be 30 in July 2019 and has been playing professionally since 2011, but there has been, among some fans, a nagging sense that we have yet to see his full potential. He is a playmaker extraordinaire, a walking highlight reel, if you please, including this famous play But the results have never quite matched the talent, it seems. In this tournament, with wins over Goikoetxea and (Aritz) Erkiaga, perhaps that will change. It is always a joy to watch him play, and hopefully he will begin to win consistently, both in Mexico City and in the North and South Basque Country.

Match article (Jai Alai y Mas Facebook--Fernando Sierra Felgueres)

In a match that meant nothing in the table (O-H were eliminated in the first round, it was still good to see Lopez get his first win of the tournament. Beating the eventual champions was a bonus.

May 24, 2019

(Aritz) Erkiaga-Inza (2-1) 2 Goikoetxea-Ekhi (1-2) 0 (15-14, 15-13) (30-27) (Fronton Mexico Facebook--match begins at -2:22:52) (move slider bar from the RIGHT to -2:22:52)

This was an intense match, basically an elimination match. Aritz played extremely well and, in the end, his team had just barely enough to get through to the final.

Olha-Lopez were eliminated in a very tight match that Goikoetxea took over at the end of the tie-breaker. After O-L came back from 2-0 down, Olha made an error that opened the door to the win.

National League

With all the glitter of Fronton Mexico, the star studded lineup of the best puntistas on the planet, it would be easy to miss the revelation that is Julien Del Rio. At age 22, he has taken FM by storm. Among all the Goikos, Olharans, Lopez', and Irastorzas, Del Rio is the only player who has won both tournaments played so far. He won Tournament 1 (see link above) with Goikoetxea in the Premier League. He won this National League Tournament with ageless 40 year old veteran Juan Leon Garcia. Not a bad start to this season. He is 6-1 going into Tournament 3, where he will partner with 42 year old Adrian Ortega, a professional with 24 years of experience, who started his career before Del Rio was born. Including Goikoetxea (38), Del Rio's partners are, on average, 18 years his senior. It doesn't seem to bother him, or them. This is one of those subtexts to a sports season that is easy miss, with all the glitz, "showbiz", and, frankly, flat out fun that is FM. If he keeps playing like he has been so far, he won't be "a secret" for long.
