============

The eight tournament 2020 Cesta Punta Fall Pro Tour began on September 5th,  and will end with finals in the A division and a 3rd place match between #3 A team and #1 B team at Pau on February 5, 2021.

Each Tournament consisted of 2 Semi-finals and a Final. The points classification that will determine the 2 best avants (fronts) and arrieres (backs) works in this fashion (each match is contested in 2 sets to 15 and a tie breaker to 5 if necessary).

2-0 win--4 points
2-1 win--3 points
1-2 loss--1 point
0-2 loss--0 points

Match results completely determined points standings. There were no bonuses for winning individual Tournaments. Ties were broken by net points.

The Tournaments:

1. September 5, 6 at St. Jean-Pied-de-Port (Donibane Garazi)
2. September 16, 21, 23 at Biarritz
3. September 12, 19, 26 at Hossegor
4. October  22, 25, 29 at Biarritz
5. October 23, 24, 30 at St. Jean-de-Luz (Donibane Lohizune)
6. November 1, 7 at Mauleon
7. December 11, 18 at Pau
8. December 19, 20, 21 at St. Jean-de-Luz (Donibane Lohizune)

9. December 29 Group A Final and 3rd Place Match at Pau
FINAL: Group A #1 v Group A #2
3RD PLACE MATCH: Group A #3 v Group B #1
Note: the Final has been delayed until February 5, due to the Pandemic (Source: Raymond Cazadebat, Section Paloise--See below under the December 11,18 Pau Tournament (Added December 14, 2020).

Current CPPT Points Classification (Through 8 A Tournaments and 5 B Tournaments  as of December  18)

FINAL CPPT POINTS CLASSIFICATION (8 Elite Group A and 5 Elite Group B Tounaments).

Note: these are copied directly from the above link, so that there will be a record of them after they disappear from the site. While searching these figures against that actual match scores below to try to determine the two missing players from T 8 (see below), I found what I think are discrepancies in point differentials. But at this point, I'm going to let it go. If you are interested, check and see for yourself. No discrepancies would have changed any place standing. (Added December 24).

FINAL MATCH WIN/LOSS TABLE (8 Elite Group A and 5 Elite Group B Tournaments)

NOTE As of December 23, 2020, the 2nd Semi-Final match of Tournament 8 has a team that is not identifiable at the CPPT web site. CPPT lists the team as "Substitute-Substitute." The Final Points table (above) is final and the two substitutes points and point differentials are given there. But it is not possible (for me) to determine who the two substitutes were given the fact that I did not keep a cumulative accounting of Tournament points (a 0-2 loss gets 0 tournament points so it is impossible to know who added 0 points because they didn't play and who did so because they lost 0-2). If I had, it would have been easy to determine from the change in point differential.

This of course, is one of the most egregious errors that a sports web site, supposedly interested in providing relevant information, can make. Another is the actual scores, which will disappear from the CPPT site before the next Tournament (if last year's procedure is followed). Even Internet Archive's "Way Back Machine" will be of no use, because the CPPT website, in its infinite wisdom, uses the exact same address for scores year after year.

This kind of thing, I know, seems perhaps petty. But these are the kinds of mistakes that drive Librarians (and retired Librarians) "up the wall." Basque Pelota has a history, part of the rich history, tradition, language, and culture of the Basque Country. It is never a good thing to erase history, in a diversion like sports, or anything else for that matter.

Of course, there is always the chance that I made a simple error and the players can be easily identified. It that is the case, please let me know at

jbsolock1@gmail.com

and a big apology ahead of time for the previous rant. :) :)

Thank you for your patience and indulgence.

The Teams:

?--?

This Tournament was crammed into the schedule directly after the Pau Tournament (Cesta Nadau) It was played on December 19, 20, and 21. There was no print or Internet match coverage that I could find, only the match video from the Final. The CPPT Final and 3rd place match are now set, according to the cumulative Tournament rules (see above). I am assuming the top Group B team will face the 3rd place Group A team based on the Group B table when that tournament was abandoned after Tournament 5. The Final has been rescheduled for February 5, 2020 at Pau.

Summary: This match was strange in that the 2nd Place Front who would advance to the Final on February 5 was going to be Laduche whether he won or lost. On the other hand, there was all to play for for the Backs. The match winner would advance, the loser would be eliminated.

Ironically, Jon Tambourindeguy, who played a magnificent match just 3 days earlier at Pau, was again superb on both offense and especially defense (he seemed to spend more on his side than on his feet after seemingly endless falling rebote saves). He continually frustrated Laduche's cortada pass attempts. Tambourindedguy seemed to catch everything. Urtasun also played sparkling defense. The match was played at a breakneck pace throughout, with the fronts pushing the action. After an extremely exciting and competitive Set 1, the unrelenting pressure of T-U finally began to take a toll as first T. Basque, and then Laduche began to crack, and error followed error, finally turning the set into a route. The winners scored 7 of the last 8 points, almost exclusively on their opponents' errors.

We will get to see Tambourindeguy again, in the Final 3rd Place match (see below). If he keeps playing the way he has been, there is little chance that the 1st Place Group B team will be able to beat him. But, as they say, matches aren't won on paper.

Tambourindeguy's figures for the Tournament, according to Canal + were +33 -13 in 4 matches (only 1 set was scored in the 4th match). In his last 2 matches he was +16 -10. He pulled his team (David Minvielle) back from the brink in the Pau final, and he basically dictated the terms of this match.

Manex Urtasun played as well as I have seen him play all year, vacuuming up almost everything that came his way. Thibault Basque had an excellent first set, but finally cracked in the middle of the 2nd. And Ludovic Laduche, who basically had nothing to play for, was excellent in the first set, but quite ordinary in the second. He looked like he "ran out of gas" at the end, but his opposition forward, seven years his senior, was "wall to wall" from beginning to end.

Tournament Preview (Google Translate English) (by Raymond Cazadebat)

Basket of Nadau 2020
Semifinals behind closed doors

We'll play again at cesta-punta Friday, December 11th at the jai-alai of Pau but behind closed doors, covid obliges. The 11th edition of the Nada ü cesta organized by the Paloise Section and integrated into the Pro-Tour circuit will not be held in the usual configuration; only the A elite professionals will be able to crowd the cancha.

On the agenda, the two semi-finals will follow from 20 pm with the main issue of the December 18 final that Palois and Pro-Tour leaders hope to open partly to the public. Another objective for the '' puntists ", to score points in the general ranking of the circuit (8 Series tournaments) to hope to be the top 4 admitted to the Master Pro-Tour scheduled also in Pau but offset from December 29 to February 5 still due to the pandemic.

Here Friday we will find the best of the French panel with the generation that had burst in 2010 and the one that claims today, 10 years after taking the place. In line with the first part, our Palois Jean Olharan (1st in the ranking) and the Luzien Txabi Inza, the two winners of the Cesta de Nada ü 2019 again associates; against them, the duo of young people, the Guéthariar Ludovic Laduche (2th in the ranking) and Theo Laborde eager to hit a big shot.

Second part, Bixente Gonzalez and Thibault Basque will face their elders Jon Tambourindeguy and Nicolas Etcheto. The Jai-alai is familiar to them; all have built their landmarks and the cancha suits them perfectly. Advances on the attack game and quick to defend, the safe back, able to capture the pelots in the toughest conditions, the ingredients are put together to make the show live up to the challenge.

Preview of the Final (by Raymond Cazadebat)

Cesta de Nadau 2020

Final Friday

Will Olharan and Inza keep the trophy against Minvielle and Tambourindeguy?

The 11th edition of the Cesta de Nadaü will not welcome an audience on Friday at the Pelote de Pau complex but the part between professionals will take place at 6.30 p.m. filmed on behalf of the Canal + sports channel which will broadcast five times in the past. week.

The plateau revealed at the end of the semi-finals promises to be most interesting. The "2010 generation" which hatched at the opening of the jai-alai Palois in 2006 and won here at the 2010 World Cup will be on the cancha with three of the four already holders at the time. Jean Olharan and Txabi Inza on one side, Jon Tambourindéguy and David Minvielle who compensates for Nicolas Etchéto injured on the other. A Béarnais associated with a Basque in each team, the draw for this 7th stage of the Pro-Tour circuit proved to be a winner. We are guaranteed a thrilling, generous, open show. We will find the duel of the forwards Olharan - Tambourindéguy with their strategy of series of attacks, counters and re-counters quick to thrill, each drawing from its superb technical and gestural register. The rear too, described as solid and sure, will be tested on their ability to defend as close as possible to walls. Complementarity, mobility, in the built game, precision and variations in the lengths of the "bots" will be the keys to success.

In the Pro-Tour classification forwards, Jean Olharan consolidates his first place with 23 pts ahead of Laduche (18) and Tambourindeguy (10). At the rear, Minvielle (20 pts) is ahead of Basque (13), Urtasun and Inza (10).

The two Béarnais are guaranteed to participate in the Master of Pau postponed until February 5, 2021; with or against whom, everything will depend on the performance of the following during the 8th and last tournament, that of Saint Jean de Luz.

I could not find any match story.

Patxi Tambourindeguy put on an offensive and defensive clinic, playing a brilliant match (+17, including two walls, cortadas, a beautiful chula, and some of the best dejadas you will see). He also was a brick wall on defense, handling several Garcia cortadas, and was all over the concha to execute uncounted difficult rebotes. Thibault Basque played solid defense in support. Manex Urtasun did not have his best day, and veteran Laurent Garcia showed a few flashes of brilliance. But in the end, there was simply too much Patxi, leading to an easy win.

Olharan +11
Laduche +3

There were no match articles available. This was a classic Olharan performance. Watch this match and you will see him at his best, one of the best and most entertaining fronts in the sport. This match featured great defense as well as offense from Olharan. A spirited but tired and sore Ludovic Laduche (see the video below under T4, Biarritz 2 Final to appreciate what a terrific performance he gave there, and who was playing in his 2nd Final in 24 hours) was no match for Olharan at his best. Who is?

This match was more interesting and hotly contested than the final scores might indicate. By my count 7 points consumed over 20 balls in play. One (3-0 to 3-1 in the first set) consisted of 36 balls in play.

Laduche played a magnificent match (+13 -2), all the more impressive due to the fact that he seemed to suffer a badly turned ankle on an attempted rebote in the second set. The injury clearly effected his mobility for the rest of the set. Still, he was able to come out and play and win the tie breaker for his 2nd Championship on the tour. Even more impressive when you consider he wasn't even supposed to play in this Tournament. He was a late replacement for Mikel Egiguren. It meant that he played in this tournament on October 25 and 29 while also playing as one of the contestants in T5 (see above) at St. Jean-de-Luz (Donibane Lohizune) on October 23 and 30.

=============

Google English translation of Semi-final 2 matches article

In the first semi-final, Laurent Garcia and Stéphane Amati knocked out the Gonzalez-Urtasun team in two sets, in a game dominated from end to end by Bidart's two competitors, both technically and tactically.

The second semi-final was between Laduche / Basque yesterday and J. Tambourindeguy / Minvielle (after the withdrawals of Egiguren, Etcheto and Laborde). After David Minvielle's very good summer form displayed by Tambourindeguy and the magnificent game played the day before in St-jean-de-Luz, we could think this red team left favorite. He was nothing about it. The greens, led by a very inspired Ludovic Laduche and well substituted by Thibault Basque who made few mistakes, took the score from the start of the game and never released the pressure to impose themselves in two sets.

The Elite A final will therefore oppose youth and experience. It will take place in Biarritz on Thursday at 18 pm, with a challenge between players of the Pôle France de Cesta Punta.
