JOKO GARBI/CHAMPIONNAT DU PAYS BASQUE 2023-24 SENIOR GROUP 1 AND GROUP 2 FINALS--2 FULL MATCH VIDEOS

Federation Francais de Pelota Basque (FFPB) Comite Departmental de Pelota Basque (one of the many Regional "Ligues") recently finished its 2023-2024 Joko Garbi Championship.  The Tournament began on November 5, 2023 and ended on January 20, 2024. There were 8 age group Tournaments (3 Top Tier and 5 Younger--Junior, Cadet, Minimes, Benjamins, and Poussins). There were 243 scheduled matches. The finals of the Premier and 2nd League Seniors were televised by Kaneldude Telebista on January 20. The Group 2 Final opened the proceedings and was followed by  the Group 1 Final.

This is some of the most recent and best produced video of Joko Garbi (which is prevalent in Iparralde--North Basque Country--A.K.A France) as an amateur sport. It is the ancestor sport of Cesta Punta (Jai Alai). Note the cestas, which  are smaller and more shallow. It is a catch and throw sport but the catch-throw is a single motion. It is played exclusively on a small court indoors. In the summer it is played on the one wall 80 meter outdoor "Frontons Place Libre". 

This modality began evolving into the Jai Alai we know today in 1887, when a player with a broken wrist invented a cesta that was longer and deeper than the ones like those you will see today. He was ridiculed at the time, until he started winning with his new cesta. That was the beginning of Jai Alai.
