This was a match of two halves. The first half was named Olaizola II and ran from about 0-0 -- 5-13. The second half was named Bengoetxea VI and ran from 6-13 -- 22-18. For the longer version of this story see the match articles above. One thing to look for in the match video is the successful strategy employed by B-L. This involved keeping the pelota away from Olizazola II, which Larunbe was particularly successful at by moving in in order to drive Untoria farther away. B-L will face Irribarria-Rezusta this weekend at Donastia. They are the only team to have defeated I-R in this competition, handing them their only two losses.

As the Deia headline stated, it was just another day at the office for I-R. After E-Z took an early 3-0 lead, a 9 point run set the tone for I-R, and though E-Z did fight back, they were never able to equalize. I-R's strategy was to pin Zabaleta as far back as possible (with Irribarria steam shoveling his high and deep bombs at this historic (1904) but rather small venue) and then pick up the pieces. An iconic picture from this match is that of Zabaleta, backing up and feeling for the back wall like a baseball outfielder feeling for the wall on a deep fly ball. Only Zabaleta couldn't catch the ball, he had to hit it. He simply was not up to the task. This match illustrates the disparity in scoring that is often evident in BP matches. The three print articles charged Zabaleta with either 5 or 6 errors. EITB was less generous, charging him with 11. Any way you look at it, it was a bad day at the office for him. E-Z now face Olaizola II-Untoria this weekend at Iruna in an elimination match.

One other thing to watch for is the interview with Elezkano II at the end of the EITB full match video. Look at his hand, bloodied on one side and quite swollen. That picture speaks a thousand words to the toll this modality can take.

Match article for all four matches

Innpala brief summary for the weekend.

Google attempted English Translation

In the next two days the matches that will be disputed will be definitive in the face of the general classification, all points are of vital importance. If the classification follows in the same way the classification for the final may be by so many so from now on to fight every bit as if it were the last ..

The results of the double day leave Landeta and Gordon  without options despite improving their performance and to begin to add whereas for the two places to be finalists they are very close with only 20 points of margin between the first 3 of each demarcation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The outcome of the League phase began to come into focus, as Landeta and Gordon were eliminated. The table is identical on both sides, with 3 players who are within 20 points of each other are vying for two spots in the final. That said, the two days play were diametrically opposite. This was the weekend where the 1st half of the League phase ended and the 2nd half began. The first half ended as it had begun, with two shutouts. Each of the first 6 matches ended 3-0. The second half began with two nail biting 3-2 finishes.

Journada 3: After 2 difficult jokos, N-I won easily over L-I in the third. After being hammered 10-2 in the 1st joko, F-G put up a valiant fight in the 2nd and 3rd against G-B. It was a sign of things to come for F-G.

Jornada 4: The next day the partnerships stayed the same, but the match ups switched. And the matches were spectacular. After cruising through the first 2 jokos (20-13), L-I collapsed and were dominated by G-B (30-10) in the last three. F-G were on the cusp of victory, with a 9-8 lead in the third joko after winning the 1st two jokos (20-14). But they couldn't get to the finish line, losing the last 2 points, N-I used the momentum from that comeback to win the last two jokos and the match. The match article praised the play of both Fusto and Gordon and said both teams received an ovation after the 75 minute struggle.

Next week it will be Necol (260pts.)-Gordon (40pts.) v Gaubeka (260pts.)-Imanol (240pts.) and Fusto (240pts.)-Ibai Perez (260pts.) v Landeta (40pts.)-Brefel (260pts).

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Aritz Erkiaga's Marvelous Month at Miami

Eric Irastorza, the great back court player who recently left Miami Jai Alai, probably said it as well as anyone (and he would know as well as anyone) when he said, in an interview with Jai Alai Facebook

El sistema de quinielas es muy particular. Necesitas muchísima concentración porque no puedes fallar, y siempre debes estar listo. Eso se aprende con los año. Como la técnica. Jugando todos los días, mejoras mucho, y agarras confianza en tu juego.

Loosely (Google English) translated:

The system of quinielas is very particular. You need a lot of concentration because you can not fail, and you should always be ready. That is learned through the years. Like the technique. Playing every day, you improve a lot, and you gain confidence in your game.

For the last month, Aritz Erkiaga has had a lot of concentration, has always been ready, and has hardly ever failed. He had a month for the ages from February 8, 2017 to March 8, 2017. For the four weeks ending February 13, 20, 27, and March 6, he led the roster each week, with 11, 15, 15, and 15 victories. He was also "in the money" (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place finishes) 22, 22, 19, and 25 times. 56 victories and 88 ITMs. He played 133 games, making his winning percentage .421 and his ITM percentage .662. Those numbers over that period of time are staggering. Miami Jai Alai keeps only season long (a 6 month season) statistics, but if you look at the statistics through March 6 (see P. 2). you will see what winning and ITM percentages look like in the long run. Aritz (#36) is having a pretty good season as well.

He also had some pretty impressive streaks during the month.

Between February 8 and March 8 he won at least 1 game in 24 consecutive performances (each 12 game session is called a performance).

Between February 17 and March 8 he won more than 1 game in 16 consecutive performances.

Between March 4 and March 8 he was in the money in 18 consecutive games.

It is well known, but bears repeating. Quiniela Jai Alai as it is played at Miami and Dania Beach Florida is a brutal grind. At Miami, the sport is played 6 days a week. Aritz is in the "A" group of players and his usual workload is 5 games a day; 4 doubles matches, each with (almost always) a different partner, and 1 singles match. With injuries and other substitutions, it is not uncommon to play 7 or even 8 games. The nature of this Jai Alai is such that if you lose concentration or make a mistake, you lose the point and have to go to the bench and wait through 7 points before you get to play again. In other words, you lose control of the game. There is no time to get into any sort of rhythm. This magnitude of success for this length of time is extraordinary.

I put together a week by week accounting of the player with the most wins for the week, game by game, as a tribute to that player. Below you will find each of Aritz' weeks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Key: Date (all games are matinees) G=Game No., P=Post No., F=Finish No. (X=Out of the Money), (Partner-Partner number of wins) All games are 7pt doubles matches except G1,G5,G9,G12, which are 7pt. singles, and G4,G8,G10 which are 9pt doubles *=substitute.

Multiple Modalities--Amateur Action Ramps Up With a Large Dose of Match Video

Last week was a busy week on the amateur scene in both the South and North Basque Country. The South Featured three women's tournament finals, two sponsored by EEPF  and one international mano tournament. In the North there were FFPB Championat de France National tourmament finals in two modalities. What made all this even more interesting was the wide availability of match video, greatly increasing the audience for these competitions. From the commercial quality of EITB to talented videographers like Olivier Simon to Facebook and/or Youtube films by relatives of players (Theo Pucheux) or players themselves (Timothe Sender), more and more amateur action is becoming available live, on demand, or both. Access to amateur matches that was unheard of 5 years ago is becoming commonplace.
