The new season in the remodeled landmark Fronton Mexico in Mexico City. is scheduled to begin March 10, 2017. With the help of Jai Alai News Facebook page and some of my own research, here are three news articles in three languages that describe various facets of the story.

This is a short article about 4 of the North Basque players who have been signed by Fronton Mexico to be part of its roster. They are Julien Hirigoyenberry, Alexandre Businello, Ludovic Laduche (front court in blue) and Nicolas Etcheto (match begins at 1:10:02 on the video). The article also contains some background on the renovated Fronton Mexico and the Olharroa Association that these players come from.

The linescore shows how dominant N-I were. G-G never led and only reached equality once. After equaling the score at 1-1 in the 2nd joko, Gordon faulted, as he also did after his team had come back from 7-3 to 7-6. Perhaps the best and most competitive point in the match was the one that began at 3-0 in the 3rd joko (25:25-26:47 on the video). It consumed 31 balls in play and was finally ended by a beautiful Necol left wall winner. The point showed Gordon at his best, making some excellent saves. But, with Gaubeka not having his best day, Imanol showing how good he can be on the long court, and Necol's power game, there was little doubt about the outcome from beginning to end.

Fusto was relentless in this match, his power more and more evident as the match progressed. He wore down Landeta and forced Ibai Perez on the back foot in the deeper reaches of the court many times, a place where his magic is more difficult to come by. Ibai Perez made some marvelous plays, but the long court is a great equalizer. It tests the strength of the back court man, as rebotes (rebound shots) are a much rarer phenomenon in this form. Anyone who watched the short court tournaments earlier in the season could easily see that the rebote is a key part of Ibai's game. The area between 36 and 54 meters, where he was forced to play often, is very different, when the player has to hit on the back foot moving away instead of on the front foot off the rebote. Landeta had, for him, a decent day in front of his home town fans. Although he made too many errors, he was the 2nd highest scorer in the match and had some impressive winners. Brefel was as enthusiastic and powerful as ever, but had a difficult time adjusting to the long court in this match, faulting 4 times in the 1st Joko before settling down. He made some marvelously athletic plays, including the play of the match, in my opinion, during the point beginning at 4-1 in the 3rd Joko (1:16:50-1:17:48 on the video), On one of the best points of the match, which consumed 17 balls in play, Landeta hit a beautiful high and deep winner... only it wasn't. Brefel ran back kilometers and made an almost impossible rebote off the right side of the back wall to keep the point going. A little later, he won the point with a perfect left wall winner.
The match turned in the second joko when, with L-IP in control at 7-4, Ibai faulted. Then at 8-6, Landeta missed a beautiful two wall winner by millimeters. A little later, they were down 2-0 instead of equal at 1-1.
Next week it will be Necol (100)-Ibai-Perez (100) v Landeta (0)-Imanol (200) and Fusto (200)-Gordon (0) v Gaubeka (100)-Brefel (100), as the League phase reaches the half-way point.

Main Nue: FFPB CDC Elite Pro par Equipe begins
The Main Nue Elite Pro par Equipe (pairs) Championnat de France A and B competition is sponsored by the Federation Francaise de Pelote Basque (FFPB). The competition began on March 3, 2017 and ends on May 7, 2017. You can follow its progress here (link to "resultats" from the FFPB home page). Pelotelive.free.fr also
provides A and B coverage. The tournaments have a "poule" phase, a single round robin, followed by a playoff system which is so byzantine that I will make no attempt to explain it because I can't. It is the most complex playoff system I have seen in my short time following these fascinating BP tournaments. Go to the FFPB site listed above and read P. 3 of the "resultats" booklet. See how clear it is to you. For now, we will just follow along and deal with the playoff system when we get to it.

Unfortunately, that scoreboard flickered in and out throughout the match.

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--List of the full roster for Fronton Mexico season, set to begin March 10.
Jai Alai News Facebook page has announced a list of 30 players that will make up the roster for the Fronton Mexico season, which is set to begin on March 10.
Players listed in ALL CAPS are from Mexico.

Binakako Txapelketako/Campionato Parejas, the premier doubles competition of the 2016-2017 Mano season, began December 2, 2016. 8 teams compete for the title. The first (league) phase is a double round robin (14 matches). The top 4 finishers will then face off in a single round robin (3 matches). The two winners will play in a final on April 9, 2017.

In a long (almost 80 minutes) battle of attrition (over 700 balls in play), O-U forged a small lead in the first half of the match and were able to increase it in the second half. They won a match that was vital to their chances to make the Semi-final League. Ezkurdia made 3 crucial attacking errors on what looked to be easy finishing shots from between the 2 and 3 line, each of which derailed his team's momentum. The error at 20-16 (1:24:15--1:24:45 on the EITB video) was especially damaging. The final point of the match (1:25:05--1:29:18) was a great illustration of how ferocious the fight for points was. It consumed 69 balls in play and was marked by several incredible saves, before Oliazola II finished it with a brilliant 2 wall winner. Neither team can afford to lose their final match.

Artola returned after a 9 week absence due to a dislocated shoulder. I-R were not at their best (7 errors between the two, according to 21iguales.com), but still had enough to win a match which was no more than a tuneup for the Semi-final League for them. A-A's 10 combined errors did not help their cause. They now face a do or die match against Olaizola II-Untoria next week.

This was a match in 3 parts, one that U-I had to win to stay alive in the hunt for a Semi-final League place. They took a 9-3 lead, only to fall behind after an 8-0 run by E-Z. U-I then answered with a 5-0 run of their own. From 14-11, they were able to hold their lead to the end. Winners of 3 consecutive matches, U-I have now joined 4 other teams with 6 wins, but they have the worst point differential of the 4. There is almost no way into the Semi-finals for them. They need to defeat Irribarria-Rezusta by a big score and hope a lot of other matches fall their way. Even if, as seems likely, they do not make the Semi-finals, they have done very well for themselves after the team (Urrutikoetxea with Berioz and then Imaz) began the competition with 5 defeats in their first 6 matches.

B-L recovered from their crushing defeat at the hands of Ezcurdia-Merino II last week to win this match and move into 2nd place in the League (7-6), the only team except for Irribarria-Resusta to have a winning record. 4 teams are right behind them at 6-7. B-L play one of those teams, Elezkano-Zabaleta, next week. A win guarantees B-L a place in the Semi-final League. A loss and it will be "get out the calculators" to figure out who moves on and who goes home. A 10-0 run gave the winners a 19-13 lead and they cruised home from there. 8 Altuna III errors did not help his team's cause. They have now lost 6 matches in a row, as Barriola prepares for his final Mundial Parejas match.

For the third consecutive month, a player had a perfect ranking. For Uterga, his perfect ranking was the 2nd in 3 months. Both February leaders "got up off the floor" after poor months in January. Uterga went from 5-0 in December of 2016 to 1-4 in January. He then rebounded to a 5-0 record in February. He has won his last 6 matches, all "Star" matches. In that span he has defeated Urriza 3 times and Ezkurra once. Goikoetxea V was at the foot of the table for January, with a 0-4 record and 6 consecutive losses. His February was very impressive. Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Naiz article on young Basque players leaving for Fronton Mexico
Euskal Pilotarian Mexikon (Naiz) by Gotzon Aranburu (February 24, 2017). This is a feature article on 3 young players who will be leaving shortly for Mexico City, Mexico, to join the roster at Fronton Mexico, which is set to begin play in early March. The players are Aaron Gonzalez, Ekhi Martinez, and Julien del Rio. The article also provides background about the new endeavor.
