FINAL

July 16

EXPLOSIÓN OF JAI ALAI IN MARKINA-XEMEIN!!
* HISTORIC DAY: Erkiaga-Zabala win the txapela in a tough and exciting final.

* The sacred temple of the basket-tip experiences a night of ecstasy that marks a turning point in Markina-Xemein.

* Erkiaga receives the MVP award for the best pelota player.
* The mutrikuarras Eñaut and Manzi, champions of the Elite Tournament.

How wonderful to see the pediment like this! Long queues at the door an hour before the show. Once inside, full house. Families, gangs of young people, teenagers, seniors... fans of a very varied profile who are joining the pelotazale family. Spectacular atmosphere. Outside the fronton, dozens of people watching the game on the giant screen. The pelotaris, after parading through the stands of the University, had the detail of going outside and greeting the fans who gathered there. They were mostly children with their parents.
The Markina-Xemein Grand Slam final was the culmination of a magnificent championship. The moment of ecstasy after six days of drunken Jai Alai. The basket-point is going through a stage of change and what happened at the University of the Ball is a turning point and no return for the sacred temple of this sport. Just a year ago we could not even imagine hundreds of people chanting the names of "Erkiaga-Zabala" to the rhythm of the White Stripes at Uni. July 16, 2022 will go down in Markina-Xemein history as the day which its historic pediment literally exploded. The pelotaris have not failed and have offered a final of great quality, very disputed and exciting. The locals take the txapela after a great comeback.
The game started very evenly and closely contested. It was a constant struggle. Neither the reds nor the blues got a sufficient difference to take advantage on the scoreboard. Olharan and Etcheto came out plugged in. Physically they are at the highest level and they hit a lot of balls, including the most difficult ones. They don't have a powerful weapon to break matches, but to beat them you have to play as hard as they do, and also do something extraordinary to beat them. When Zabala dominated in the rally, Erkiaga looked for the ball, he went for it, often jumping to enter at a run and finish off. The one from Ispaster signed wonders with his clean and classic style, so elegant, throwing txik txak with effect, showing off with two walls on the side or breaking the ball with the side wide. But the score remained even.
At 10-all, the Blues took a step forward. Very soft cut from Olharan, but perfectly close to the wall that puts them a little higher. 10-11. The next goal is decisive. Hard rally, Zabala reaches txula, Olharan is late and leads to good; Aritz goes for the ball, jumps, shoots txik txak, the blues save another ball; Erkiaga enters again, knocks down two walls, Olharan guesses the move, arrives and ends the goal. 10-12 blue. The pair from Iparralde arrives with a goal to spare (12-14) but Etcheto makes a mistake in a two-wall and the error puts them in trouble. The public pushes the Colorados, chanting their names, the ball is hot and Zabala leaves the balls "out". Erkiaga hits two rebounds and in the third he surprises the blues and the more than a thousand attendees with a third rebound, this time to two walls, tying the set. Tremendous both from Aritz and 14 equals. Maximum tension. Erkiaga serves and is positioned to play rebound. In the case of Ispaster it is a position not of defense, but of attack. The Blues defend the goal and in the end the Paloise striker puts the ball in the exact spot so that Zabala doesn't go in and too little rebound comes out. Set for Olharan and Etcheto. 14-15.
In the second set, things completely change. Very good start for the Biscayans who are 8-2 ahead. Still, it's not too late for the blues. Olharan and Etcheto do not throw in the towel. They believe in their chances to win the match in two sets and they are very close on the scoreboard. At 9-3, Zabala hits a right, Olharan jumps in and finishes with a nice slice. Nice both and a warning to the Colorados. Don't trust yourselves too much. 9-4, 10-6, 11-7 and 12-9. The second set is going to have a more exciting ending than expected. Erkiaga takes the reins of the match and leads the Colorados in the absence of a goal. 14-10. Zabala raises his arms to ask the public for support. The Uni, standing, chants the names of Erkiaaaaaagaaaa Zabaaaaaaalaaaaa. Olharan surprises with a serve wide but Zabala is attentive. In the end it is Pau's striker who fails to score a ball close to the left wall. 15-11, we have a tiebreaker.
But although the txapela is played for five goals, Erkiaga does not speculate. He has character and knows that he decides the games. In the first goal he shoots two walls to the side, Olharan arrives and answers with the same move. Both blue, 0-1.
The striker from Ispaster cannot rebound a ball and those from Iparralde are two ahead. 0-2.
The public gets nervous. The txapela paints blue. But there is margin. That's when Zabala appears. A good ball from him means an opportunity for Aritz. That's how it is at this point. Erkiaga enters a free ball on the four eight and soft soft, he shoots a perfect cut with a lot of spin. 1-2.
In the next goal, a ball from the blues goes to rebound and goes wide. Aritz stands on the counter and the entire audience yells "Bi!" at him. Let him knock down two walls because Olharan is in prison. Erkiaga does so and achieves the draw. The stands go crazy.
Bring out Aritz, victory is closer. Olharan enters air but hits a stick. 3-2.
Penultimate goal. Erkiaga enters from the right and catches Olharan prisoner in the txoko again. He shoots two walls and so much. 4-2. The Ispaster artist is in charge of ending the final with a last rebound goal. 5-2.
Comeback and txapela for Erkiaga and Zabala. The final has had all the ingredients for a great show. Good game, great rivalry, rally, plays, tension, emotion and final comeback. In addition to the txapela, Erkiaga is presented with a black marble trophy from Markina-Xemein. MVP, recognition to the best pelotari.
In the final of the elite tournament, Eñaut Urreisti and Mikel Manzisidor take the txapela in the tiebreaker against Aarón González de Matauko from Alava and Ion Ibarluzea from Markin. 11-15, 15-12, 2-5. It's no secret what a great job they're doing at Mutriku's "Danok Bat" club. There are the results. Both Urreisti and Manzi are also participating in the Hossegor tournament. It is very important for these youngsters to play, be seen and take advantage of all the opportunities they are given.
In Markina-Xemein, for now it's time to rest. It has been six beautiful and unforgettable days. It takes a bit of rest to assimilate and reflect on what happened. The basket-tip wave has reached its crest at the University. But this does not stop. On Tuesday, presentation of the Grand Slam of Gernika. A pediment where the Jai Alai party is already consolidated.

Alex-Danel vs. Eñaut-Manci: 15-6, 12-15, 2-5 (Elite Tournament)
ERKIAGA-ZABALA vs BARANDIKA-DEL RIO: 15-11, 6-15, 5-4 (Grand Slam)
Match not suitable for heart patients in Markina-Xemein. The University, overflowing. The chair does not fail, young people come en masse and "the Americans" are already here. It gives a lot of joy to see ex-pelotaris who live on the other side of the pond in the fronton. Everyone tries to get to Los Cármenes and this year they are hallucinating with the atmosphere that is lived in the fronton.
On the pitch, we've seen it all. Xabi Barandika's match should be highlighted. Gernikarra has taken a step forward. He has put together a good game, finishing off a lot and well. He has come in half a dozen times, and has not forgiven. From the side he has finished goals well, and we already know the power he has on the right. Great match for Xabi, despite the defeat. At the rear, both Zabala and del Rio have had their pluses and minuses and Aritz may have lacked the spark of other times. The Colorados have won the game, but at the last breath. Notice to boaters. They will have to play better if they want to beat Olharan and Etcheto in the final.
The game itself has started colorado. After the four of a kind, the Colorados have been taking advantage until reaching 8-5 at the first break. Del Rio has done damage but has also missed several forehand balls. Right at the break, Xabier Barandika went to the locker room. A sprained ankle has had the entire public on edge, but after spending several minutes with the masseur and ex-ball player Gorka Bilbao "Bilka", the man from Gernikar has returned to the pitch and has shown no further signs of pain. After that break, the Colorados have continued to extend their lead to 11-8. The set has ended 15-11 with a flank inside the Ispaster artist.
But in the second set the tables have been turned, and how! Great display of the blues. Del Rio has landed two impressive right hands early in the set. One from top to bottom (0-2) and another to two-walls (0-4). The Colorados, still out of place, have seen how the game was complicated against some relentless Blues. Barandika has always had the virtue of putting in many difficult balls and managing postures well, but in addition to that today he finished off phenomenally, leaving opponents a bridge, shooting cuts or from the side. Eight goals have been put up (1-9). When the colorados did so much, Aritz was not successful with the serve and Barandika has not forgiven him. In the end, nine goals difference (6-15) and the tiebreaker.
Winning the second set gives confidence for the third. More, if you have been much superior as in the case of the blues tonight. Well, the third set has started blue, quite blue, 1-3. In a five-point mini-match, 1-3 is a big lead. But the tiebreaker, more than for the quality of the goals, stood out for the tension. An enormous tension. The pediment supported those at home. Erkiaga is from Ispaster but raised in Markina-Xemein, and Zabala is 100% local pelotari. After 1-3 that tension has turned into a murmur. The Colorados did not transmit good feelings, quite the opposite. But in the end, three balls to the width of the blues, two from Del Rio and one from Barandika, has condemned them. The gasteiztarra, after the last ruling, has collapsed. It was his opponents, Aritz and Jon, who, seeing him on the ground, came to comfort and encourage him to the unanimous applause of the public. Sport values.
Today the Colorados won, but the Blues had the Markina-Xemein final very much in their hands.
In the Elite Championship, victory for Eñaut Urreisti and Mikel Manzisidor from Mutrikuarra, 15-6, 12-15 and 2-5 against Alex Goitia and Danel Mandiola from Markin. Gipuzkoarras have not started well but from the second set they have shown superiority. We already know Manzi but not so much Eñaut. The young striker has a good start and good posture. He today he has shown glimpses of the quality of him.
The day of Carmen, sixth and last day of the Grand Slam. The function will begin at eight in the evening.

1st Semi-Final

July 2

OLHARAN AND ETCHETO GET SERIOUS
*The most smiling couple on the circuit reaches the final of Markina-Xemein
(Argazkiak: Zigor Etxebarria)
Antxon-Atain II vs. Aaron-Ibarluzea: 12-15, 12-15
GOIKOETXEA-SALEGI vs. OLHARAN-ETCHETO: 14-15, 7-15
The public of the University has witnessed a serious game without frills. We are already in the semifinals, and everyone wants to be in the final of the Grand Slam. This year the pediment is abuzz. Another great entry has been recorded today. It is something historical. Four days in a row with this atmosphere and there is still the final fireworks. We have to go back 25-30 years to remember these great entries on a regular basis at Markina-Xemein. Much of it is a new audience. The next job of the basket-tip is for a large part of them to become Jai Alai fans. Step by Step
Jean Dominique Olharan and Nicolas Etcheto have presented their serious candidacy for the title. Today they have shown their best version. They have come out "plugged in" from minute one. His goal was not to lose a ball, put rhythm into the game and reach the 15th cardboard. Already in the first goals it was clear that it was a semifinal. A lot of equality (1-1, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 5-7, 7-7) and a good basket-point on the court. Goikoetxea, the most powerful of the four, scored goals based on polishing the ball. His cuts are still impressive. He's still the best rebounder on the forehand...and backhand what? With that play he has finished the goal to tie at seven. In addition to giving him placement, putting a lot of speed into it.
Even so, the Blues were ahead at the first break (7-8) thanks to a two-wall by Olharan on the rest of the serve. After the break they have remained level until 11-11. At that time, Goikoetxea has opened a gap of two goals, with a two-wall forehand, and another two-wall, this time, a backhand rebound. From 13-11 they have gone to 14-12 and it seemed that the set was red. Well no. A "stick" from Iñaki has brought the blues closer to one. The next goal was spectacular: a hard rally, a shot inside Olharan, Salegi came running, the entire frontón roared supporting the local pelotari, the markinarra led a good one, the goal continued and in the end, the Blues managed to tie at fourteen. Many in the audience applaud. In the end, the Colorados lost the game due to an unforced error by Salegi. 14-15.
If the first game had fallen red, surely another rooster would have sung. But Pau's striker and Ahetze's defender, in addition to having the machinery fully greased, have gained confidence. They have played a great game. The second set started like the first, very close... until 7-7. From then on, the Colorados have been going down little by little and the Iparralde machine was still in the same gear as at the beginning of the match. Jean and Nicolas may not break games, but it is very difficult to beat them. Goiko, despite the defeat, looks very good. Salegi has dropped a bit in the last part of the match, but he can be happy with the tournament he has done. In the space of half a year (since Dania's closure) he has carried out a special physical preparation with the help of Gontzal Uriona, and that has allowed him to reach the summer in a position to play with the best. He dedicates five days a week to baseball, whether on the court or in the gym. That's clear. Daily work opens up new opportunities. After a decade in the US, Eñaut has played his first major tournament in the Basque Country and the Markina-Xemein Grand Slam has been his calling card. If he follows this path, new opportunities will come to him.
Olharan and Etcheto are already waiting for their opponents for the final. It will be Erkiaga-Zabala or Barandika-Del Rio. Barandika and Etcheto were the winners of the Donostia Grand Slam. Ahetze's defender is in great form and is looking for his second cap of the summer at Markina-Xemein. Next Saturday we will know if Barandika from Gernikarra also repeats in the final, or on the contrary, it is the "locals" Aritz Erkiaga and Jon Zabala who play on Carmen day.
* Aaron-Ibarluzea, finalists in the Elite Tournament
Alava's Aaron Gonzalez de Matauko, who by the way, liked Markina-Xemein a lot, and the local Ion Ibarluzea, have won the first semifinal of the Elite Tournament in straight sets over Antxon Alberdi and Gorka Mugartegi "Atain II". The second semifinal will be played next Saturday by Alex-Danel and Eñaut-Manzi. Markina-Xemein vs. Mutriku.

Day 3--June 24

THE UNIVERSITY DICTATES A SENTENCE!
*Beaskoetxea-López and Arbe-Ibarluzea, eliminated.
BEASKOETXEA-LOPEZ vs GOIKOETXA-SALEGI: 13-15, 11-15
OLHARAN-ETCETO vs. ARBE-IBARLUZEA: 12-15, 15-7, 5-2
We have the semi-final crosses defined. Goikoetxea-Salegi and Olharan-Etcheto, winners of today, will face off next Saturday. And in two weeks time they do it Erkiaga-Zabala vs Barandika-Del Rio. Better buy those tickets early. Those who didn't manage to reserve the ones for Carmen's day, are already regretting.
Markina-Xemein University has changed. Another joy is breathed this year. Of course, seeing the response the audience is getting! Today, third day of League play, was another success. 500 well spent people. Inertia has been created. At the front end it's fun. There's a vibe. But above all, there are games, good playing and a lot of excitement. And there is a pelotari markinarra that after many years, has come to value: Eñaut Salegi. The credit is yours, for believing it, and doing the homework well. Before he had game too, but to play these championships it was necessary that he lost weight. He's put in the effort and here's the result. Salegi is already a semi-finalist of the Grand Slam, having won with Goikoetxea, nothing more and nothing less, over Beaskoetxea and Lopez. Diego and Imanol haven't started the summer off right. Being a favorite couple, in Donostia they fell in the semifinals, and in Markina-Xemein, in Liguilla. In two sets today. Part of the reason has been Goikoetxea.
Iñaki's looking good. Fresh. Comfortable. Wearing blue today, they lead 2-6. The Colorado's have tied the card seven and are three up. It was the best moment of the match for Diego and Lopez. Playing serious, not risking too much, but getting the many ahead. But after the 12-9 Goiko has pumped in, and assisted by Salegi, they have moved closer to evening at 13-13. The winning inertia has led them to the final 13-15. The second set has been evened to 9-9. Goikoetxea rip off and blue match from there. The Zumaiarra has closed the match with a bounce inside leaving Lopez on the bridge. 11-15. Victory in two sets, with Goiko and Salegi leading Group B (8 points), Barandika-Del Rio second (3 points) and Beaskoetxea-López eliminated (1 point).
Once the first match is over, a nice tribute has been paid to local pelotaris Erika Mugartegi and Arai Lejardi. They've taken to the court with the trophy they won in Toulouse. Women's European Cup, in club competition. The sky and the jump!
Back at the Grand Slam, opponents Arbe and Ibarluzea have sought the gesture in the second game of the night... and they almost got it. Almost, because they've started off very strong, winning the first set and keeping their playoff hopes alive. Olharan and Etcheto are "much of a pair." But they're more of a couple playing against big figures, than the other way around. Today, clear favourites, they have made things very complicated. Well it is true that the blues, led by Arbe, have played a good first set. Jokin has taken the reins of the game, finished the scores and secured Ibarluzea. Colorados, in reverse. Undecided confused and distracted. Starting from 10 equal, in so many deciders, they have failed too much, and have fallen 12-15. The Last Both, of Two Walls, by Jokin Arbe.
In the second set, the Iparralde couple have put the batteries on, and the diver. Few have been able to do the markings after the 6-1 initial. The set was very colorful, both in the game and on the scoreboard. Still, the biggest applause has been for Arbe in the tie 12-6. Take out Jean Dominique, put in Jokin air and in ONE MOVE he throws a perfect drop over the txapa. cleaner than the impossible. Lovely to see the ball flying, while Jokin kept the basket still in the end position, as if the image was paused, until the ball has bounced twice. A work of art. The set, just like that, has been colorized, 15-7.
In the playoffs, a lot of nerves. The two pairs needed the win to qualify. At the first shift, take out Olharan, air Arbe enters and throw away... but it's almost going to the plate. 1-0. The next both is Colorado, Ibarluzea's stick at the header. 2-0. The Blues are getting closer. Ibarluzea reverses and Etcheto can't stop it. 2-1 Tension, applause, cheer and balling. So hard. Etcheto throws two walls but doesn't hit it. Arbe baits and pulls txik-txak. Etcheto runs back, and gets the ball up. Follow the trend, and in the end it's Olharan who jumps up the awning above. TIE. 2-2. Markers believe it. It's possible to win. The audience is jamming them... but it couldn't be. At this level, mistakes pay dearly, and Olharan and Etcheto have not wasted them.. 5-2 final, shame for the locals... but the atmosphere in Markina-Xemein is party.
Erkiaga and Zabala top Group A (7 points), Olharan-Etcheto second (4 points) and Arbe-Ibarluzea are eliminated (1 point).
The Grand Slam is the biggest success that the basket-tip has experienced in the Viscain township, in many, many years. The announced changes to the marble quarry presentation were necessary. They're running themselves. And the result is ES-PEC-TA-CU-LAR.
Note: Rafael Anchia, important Democratic congressman in the Texas House of Representatives, was present at the front. Pelotari Julio Anchia's son, Rafael was "ball boy" at Milford's front, and to this day he remains a big fan of Jai Alai.
Congratulations Markina-Xemein!

ERKIAGA-ZABALA, TO THE (Semi) FINALS!
GOIKOETXEA-SALEGI vs BARANDIKA-DEL RIO: 15-12, 15-9
ERKIAGA-ZABALA vs ARBE-IBARLUZEA: 15-8, 15-12
Great atmosphere tonight at the University of Markina-Xemein. The fronton has been very golden since its inception. If I asked hundreds of fans to stand up, I don’t know if there would be room for everyone. But outside of the exact number, the news is that something has changed with the Winter Series this winter. People want the players in the Basque Country, the future must be built here and we are building the foundations for that now. We are at a key moment and the response from the fans is to be applauded.
Eñaut Salegi, a local player, was applauded and applauded by the fans. The result of his physical preparation is obvious and he has done so in a very short time. In the middle of the year. Come from Dana and between the summer. However, the match did not start well for Goikoetxea and for him. The Blues came out on top and Barandika scored with great confidence. Leaving it in the corner or bouncing on the double wall. After the trio, they started to widen the gap, as Del Rio from Vitoria-Gasteiz also injured his right hand. They went 4-8, 5-9 and 6-10. It was difficult for Goiko to get into the game, but when he did, he dominated the court. Zumaia drew with two points in a row (12-12) and went straight to the 15th point.
Iñaki has been comfortable on the court. Put it in the 7-8 box and enter the air or pump-up (botecorrido) to dominate afterwards. He has made some great saves, throwing a great ball from top to bottom, throwing huge shots on the plate. With great speed, especially two. One on the right and the other on the side. He has spent them on the plate. However, Zumaia has a safe defender today. Salegi has lost very few balls, he is very well placed on the court and he always puts the ball on purpose. Giving direction. Knowing where to throw it. 15-9, also a second game for the Reds. They will play against Beaskoetxea and López next week. They lost on the first day and must win. If this happens and there is a tie in Group B, the number of sets will decide the draw, and even if there is a tie, the number of points will be decided.
In Group A, Erkiaga and Zabala have already qualified for the finals. The winners of the Winter Series are also playing together in Markina-Xemein and have won the first two matches. 2-1 last week against Olhara and Etcheto, and today 2-0 against Arbe and Ibarluze. Ibarluzea has joined as a substitute for the injured Lekerika. It was very difficult for the Blues to win the match, and there were no surprises. The reds started 6-1 in the first game and once that difference was taken, the set had little color. 8-2, 9-5 and finally 15-8. There was no shortage of encouragement for the blues, as the youth teams cheered on both Arbe and Ibarluzea throughout the match.
Because of these spirits, they have improved in the second game and there has been excitement. Ibarluzea is also more comfortable on the court with his initial nervousness removed, and Arbe is getting the hang of his technical game. They started to win 0-2 and went 6-8 before the break. After a short break, Aritz bounced back, giving the ball a lot of strength and equalizing with a sweet double-walled shot. They drew eight and placed 10-8 in a row. That's where the excitement came from. They played very well and we saw a nice match between Erkiaga and Arbe. Ispasterko threw down the wall, Arbe entered, and, taking Aritz prisoner, answered with another wall. That 11 and 10 was one of the most applauded. The Blues have advanced but have not equalized. In the end, Erkiaga and Zabala won 15-11. Few bullets today, too.
The matches will be played on Friday next week, instead of Saturday. The festival will begin at 9:00 p.m. Internet tickets. The ones put on for Carmen’s day are spent in one day.
The response from the people of Markina-Xemein is being GREAT!
No more can be requested.

Up Jai Alai!

Day 1--June 12

UNIVERSITY ROARS WITH JAI ALAI!!!
* Two laps provide a spectacular atmosphere and a chip change in the Ball University
BEASK LOPEZ vs BARANDIKA DEL RIO: 15-6, 14-15, 1-5
ERKIAGA-ZABALA vs OLHARAN-ETCHETO: 14-15, 15-14, 5-3
Something has changed in Markina-Xemein. More than just something. A lot has changed. The audience roared today. He has risen. It's been vibrating. He's got the pelotaris jammed. Yes, you can understand a lot of ball, and applauding, screaming and roaring at the same time. Expectations have been met. 600+ people in matinèe function enjoying Jai alai. Bust of Erdozar Minor presides over Ball University. Eusebio Garate is smiling at this hour. He has had so much fun. But above all, he's happy to see an understanding audience tucking in the pelotaris so well. Sunflower!
The Grand Slam opening feature did not look good. Beaskoetxea-López, favorites against Barandika-Del Rio, have started to roll in. Barandika had just won the first title of the summer in Donostia yesterday. Blues had a hard time settling down on the pitch. Diego and Imanol, worked in unison. Zumaia's one is in good shape. He's been playing comfortable. One-zero, two-zero, three-zero, four-zero, five-zero, six-zero, seven-zero. But where are they going? The first set has been knocked out. Only after 13-3 have the Blues managed to conceal a bit. 15-6 final. Not looking good. The party has no color.
What has no color? How could you not? The Blues have cleared and account fresh. Above all the gasteiztarra Del Rio He has unleashed tremendous right whips. The Colorados, confident, believed they had the game in their pocket. But it's been complicated for them. The Blues had to risk it and looking at the scoreline they realised they could beat Beaskoetxea and Lopez. The crowd's cheered out, and so are the blues. They've put themselves in the lead at 11-12. Watch out, there's a game on. In the 12 equal Barandika has missed two tie-off balls on the table one or two. Is the game over? NOPE! After 14-12 14-13 has come, and Del Rio has tied the tie with a wide right. Moment of tension. Beaskoetxea fails in the playoffs, and we're going to the playoffs. 14-15
In the third set, the Blues have shown a lot more confidence. Del Rio puts it 1-0 with a right. Barandika well done extend the score 0-2. With the 0-3 Gasteiztarra has risked where it shouldn't have (1-3) but there was margin. 1-4, both from Barandika in and 1-5 final for, theory, the least favorite pair in the championship.
Second game. Jose Maria Mirapeix, Catalan Pelotari, Olympic basketball champion in Mexico 1968 and national coach in Barcelona 1992 is in charge of deciding the takeout. The crowd stands with Zabala. Shout out "BULLET ! Bullet! ”, but the game is pretty blue. Olharan and Etcheto have amazing defending. They can counter the Erkiaga attack with the legs of the first and the boat-run of the second. A spectacle to see Ahetze's, who comes from winning at the Balda. Olharan finished it sideways. Here's how the ball opens in Markina-Xemein's frontline. The set went very even on the scoreline, but the Blues were playing more. Cut from Pau's eight, two side walls, two Etcheto walls. Aritz and Jon couldn't find the match's recipe, but they've held on to 14 even. At the end, 14-15 to Iparralde.
In the second set, the Colorado's have changed tactics. The Blues didn't fail. Had to get ball more alive and do damage like that. Erkiaga topped off a two wall in 2-3. Act after, Zabala fires a ball in the middle of the court, the audience starts shouting his name. Cut tape and almost broke the txapa. Ball gets fired into the top net. 2-4, the blues are still kicking. There's a bit, the 8-10, that's to be framed. Throws two walls Olharan, Erkiaga hits a tremendous leap and gets a catch. Strip cut, Olharan air enters, Blues start sending again, Erkiaga falls to the ground to bounce no less than three times. Finally, he risks that pose with a two-wall, but he pulls it out. Whatever. It was pretty impressive, and the audience is standing ovation. The Blues remain ahead on the scoreboard, but Erkiaga gets it all tied at thirteen with a rebound. Tied at 14, and at the end, the late-minute Colorado turn it around. The audience goes wild!
In the playoff, whoever comes to win the second set has the most chance to win. So says the statistic. Why? It certainly changes the mood. Last game was a 5-3 for Erkiaga and Zabala. In Markina-Xemein, the crowd stands up. The audience applauds. The Korean audience. The audience enjoys themselves. Hail to Allah. Joyful party. It's been a great day for ball, and a great turnout for the basket-tip.
MVP of the match: Unai Narbarte, Jai Alai Great Speaker!

Juan Ignazio Zulaika Blog

Watch out for don Eusebio

Dear Bandini

We're on a roll, Bandini. The thing started in Gernika with a tournament called `Winter Series´ and, look, a tremendous success that caught everyone off the hook, starting with me.

I went to three of the festivals and you don't know, people asking me about you. How is Bandini doing?... "Give my regards to Bandini"... "Give him my regards"... a curious thing happened to me. The stands bursting at the seams and dozens of young people: Bandini!... Bandini!... I got goosebumps until I realized that what they were shouting was: Barandi!... Barandi!... cheering on Xabi Barandika, an idol local. Things that only happen to me.

Gernika finished and the first Grand Slam arrived in Donostia. Another success, not as much as the one in Gernika, but the community is satisfied. And, immediately afterwards, the second Grand Slam, where and in Markina-Xemein. A region, that of Lea-Artibai, to give you an idea, around 40% of a total of 3,500 professionals who have given the basket-tip have left. It's not a joke, no. It deserves a sociological study.

And not only that, from that town emerged the one who in his time was considered the best, the most complete, of all the pelotaris: Erdoza Menor. The unanimity is complete. Pelotaris, chroniclers, fans and even Hemingway did not hesitate to describe Erdoza Menor as the best of all those he had seen play, which were quite a few.

At that time, I have already told you, they loved to give nicknames to the pelota players, well, they nicknamed Don Eusebio Gárate: `El Fenomeno´, `El Emperador´, `El Rey de las Canchas´, I have also read somewhere: `El Rata´ and `Veneno´. The truth is that those chroniclers did not spare nicknames for the pelotaris.

Why the most complete pelotari? Because he managed all the positions like no one else and gave advantages that no one has ever given in the history of baseball. With a modest partner facing the best trios on many occasions. He gave advantages in the serve and even on some occasion, they prohibited him from rebounding.

Last Sunday modernity arrived at the University of the basket-tip in the format of music, parades and commentator included and there was more than one who was pissed off. The same Erdoza Menor from his watchtower —a bust in his honor since 1962 placed above the scoreboard, to the right of the frontis— it was not known for sure if he was smiling or swearing in Hebrew. And watch out for don Eusebio if he gets angry. On a certain occasion in Havana, in 1928, the judge gave a decision contrary to the interests of the 'Phenomenon'. In a fit of rage he grabbed the judge's chair and threw it into the air. No matter how famous he was, it cost him his job. He did not play again in Cuba.

Sunday's was a turning point for Uni, leaving aside some charanga in Cármenes playing the anthem of the pelotaris: "Let's go to the fronton, let's go..." and the almond seller "paste-kete-kete... almonds from the almond tree, my brother steals them and I sell them”… to date no other kind of entertaining offer had been known. And it seems that it worked, also in matinee. 600 people is no small feat for a first day.

The public enjoyed as a witness informs me. Good matches and excitement in the stands. Animation by a spiker, Narbarte, who is becoming the jewel of the World Tour. Rumors are swirling that offers are falling for him from the Miami Heat and even Magic City management is considering hiring him. It's a guy, Bandini, who if you look at him looks like a Los Angeles Rams player. A block of marble from a neighboring quarry. A crack with the micro. I don't know if don Eusebio will think the same.

By the way Bandini. Can you imagine a ball player with a huge punch to the point where after a low serve of his, he was fouled by the front judge, thinking that he would not reach the foul box, and when he touched the ground it turned out that he had exceeded the Raisin. Buaaá!…
How I would like to hear the comment from the spiker, from Narbarte, after that move. He would not be wasted.

That Zabala is strong and that Del Río hits him like a man possessed?
The thing with Erdoza Menor must have been tremendous. A journalist commented: “The noise of the ball thrown by Erdoza hitting the wall is different from that produced by other players. It's dry, metallic."

His cuts were violent to such an extent that playing Guillermo against `The Colossus of Markina´, he launched a txapa-gain of his own. So low and violent that Ondárroa's, seeing that he did not arrive even by chance, he turned around to return to his position. With such bad luck that he hit the ball on the back of her foot and, as a consequence, her foot in plaster cost her a month and a half.

Imagine, Bandini, Erdoza Menor with a baseball bat in his hands. Babe Ruth would have outgrown him They were people of a different paste. Neither crossfit nor milk. pure candle.

The important thing, Bandini, is that the fans had a great time. Just like Fito's supporters in San Mamés the night before. In Bilbo they had Fito & Fitipaldis; in the Uni to Narbarte.

Bad tongues say that after the success of the event (now they are called that) they saw the Atain, Etxeba and co., holding each other by the shoulder singing: "Sailor soldier"...

Well yes, it seems that after a hard winter spring has arrived, to the university too.

I don't know if Don Eusebio will agree, but I'm afraid he'll have to get used to it.

A hug, Bandini.
